    This applied to my life so much. 😊 I’m taking a very similar approach but I believe I’m dealing with pests so I am trying to figure it all out. My anthuriums in pon root SO vigorously that I’m constantly sizing up they’ve all made it into the large soup containers.

      I’m so glad! Very sorry to hear about the pests though. In my experience Azamax gets rid of everything but apparently it can be hard to get outside of the US. Hope everything works out!

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  Рік тому +1

      Just be really careful it doesn’t get too moist. In my experience, monstera really don’t like having wet feet but anthurium really don’t mind. I probably wouldn’t refill the water on a monstera until it was dry or make sure to use a much taller cup and keep a little more distance. Finger crossed it works out well!

      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet I'm really new to the plant world. I have a huge solarium where 99% of my plants are very happy. This is my first time working with a seedling. Do you have any advice? I have actual Lechuza sub, I have Pon, and I have a good chunky mix that is dirt/orchid bark based that has worm castings, Perlite, activated charcoal, and a premium propagation soil. She sent a Strawberry Shake as a gift that is equally as small. What would you plant them in? I promise, if I lose them, I won't blame you. I'm looking for advice from a trusted plant pro. I know you're channel is for entertainment and you give advice based on YOUR experiences. But as a newbie (I started my shop 4 months ago,) you are way more advanced than me. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you, darlin.

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  Рік тому

      Ok so I gotchu on the strawberry shake - keep it in moss until it has nice roots about 2 inches long and then remove as much moss as possible and put it into your desired substrate. I’ve rooted fairly small shakes in aroid mix after airlayering in ambient humidity before (mine is about 60%). The trick is they need a well draining mix and a lot of light (mine tolerate some direct sun either in the morning or afternoon). You should fine as long as it’s got good roots when you transfer and it stays in good light and above 70 degrees until it’s established.
      For the Burle Marx flame, I think you have more options since it’s not variegated. A lot of people have really great success using the layering method with monstera, but they use taller cups and more layers than just pon and moss. Monstera love having water run over their roots but then to never be water logged. I grow all of my monstera in a soil-less aroid mix similar to what you described above. Just make sure it’s got a decent amount of root before you remove the moss from the root ball and try to transition it. I hope that helps!

At the point now for the ones in PON that I water about once a week for about another month before I'm comfortable with filling the self watering reservoirs. For me it's scary that I'm not sure where and if the plants are drying out. So far they are all really happy.

    I have a luxurian in moss and I'm considering moving it this way to my DIY Pon mix.
    Do you recommend keeping a water reservoir beneath the pot containing the pon (with holes at the bottom so that it can wick the water up)?
    I usually use this method for my alocasias and they love it.
    I'm new to anthuriums and am debating if the reservoir and pon method will work well for anthuriums as well?
    Would love to know your thoughts.. :)

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  10 місяців тому

      It should work. I usually just use cups with no holes bc I’m lazy and they usually outgrow the cup fast enough that I can just repot them before the pon needs to be flushed, but if you prefer to have holes then that should also work fine. But I do recommend keeping a reservoir. I have a lux hybrid I did this with and it worked pretty well. Plant is still alive so no complaints 👍🏻

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  Рік тому +1

      Hello! So the goal is the plants don’t stay in the cups long enough to need to be flushed but if you want to keep them in the cups long term, you can poke holes in the bottom and then just stack them in another cup. Then just flush like normal. Hope that helps!

    thanks for sharing, I tried the method :) I have a question. How often do you water them? Needs to soak them in water like a hydro as in the usual use-case of Pon? Or, thanks to the surfaced moss, can that keep a good moisture level that also affects the Pon layer also? Great if you could share your input😀

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  Рік тому +1

      Hi! So I usually water them when I notice their reservoirs looking low. I can always see since mine are in clear plastic cups. The ones that went into the prop box only need to be topped off every few weeks - not very often at all. The ones in my cabinet where the humidity is only 80% need to be watered ever 10 days or so. Hope that’s helpful!

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  Рік тому

      So I’m not too sure this is super practical for most people because I make like a whole potion, but I make 2 gallons of water at a time. I use brita filtered water. I add Tezula MSU orchid fertilizer for tap water, 1 ml of superthrive, 1 ml of liquidirt and 1 ml of cal mag. You have to add the cal mag first and like mix up the water and let it sit for a while or else the nutrients can mix badly and cause nutrient lockout. Then once that’s all mixed up, I ph balance to 5.7. Hope that helps!

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  Рік тому +1

      An anthurium or something else? Most things I would recommend taking a cutting and water rooting it and then putting that into pon. Most anthurium would probably be ok to do that but I’ve never done it so I can’t give specific advice on that. I would definitely rinse as much soil off as possible though and make sure that there were no damaged roots left. Honestly if the plant is doing well in soil, I’d probably leave it.

      I can’t say 100% for sure that it wasn’t something I did wrong but I think the shape make its so that they sneakily have a lot more volume and I think they are just too big for the plants I put in them. I find they dry out way too fast too.

      I’ve never tried it but in theory it could work… my preferred method for transferring a plant from soil to semi hydro is to rinse all the soil off and put the plant in water until it grows water roots and then put into semi-hydro. Lots of people do substrate layering methods though. I think Unplantparenthood is known for that.
