The destruction of Lyon: New owners, new lows for a HISTORIC club

  • Olympique Lyon was once the premier club in France, winning seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles around the turn of the century, a stretch of consecutive league titles that even PSG hasn’t matched (yet).
    However, the 2023-24 season has been an unmitigated disaster for Olympique Lyon, who recently changed owners and presidents, with the American businessman John Textor and his Eagle Football group taking over in 2022. So why have they sunk so low? What caused them to have such a strange transfer window? Why are Lyon so bad this season?

    As a Lyon fan I think you haven't talked enough about the late Aulas period. Aulas methods were absolutely outdated and the club priorities felt way more on the business side than the sporting, we were constantly selling promising players for cheap instead of waiting for them to play regularly at Lyon before selling them for a better price (without any pressure from the DCNG), constant investments in non sporting projects (leisure facilities around the newly built stadium) and we haven't seen any of that return in the transfermarket. Truly weird sporting choices such as buying Kadewere, or Dembele... instead of trusting youngsters like Gouiri, and more importantly TERRIBLE MANAGEMENT Aulas always favoured his friends (such as Ponsot) who were behind those decisions, we didn't even have a scouting cell FFS for a club as big as Lyon it is truly appauling (that's part of the outdated methods). When Juninho came back to the club and brought some changes as sporting director with the recruitment of Paqueta and Guimares he couldn't do his job correctly because Aulas wouldn't let him, he had entered into a more or less open conflict with the former management and was forced to leave. Clearly Textor is also at fault but half a season of management doesn't explain all those failures, it was only the continuation of what the club was doing regularly failing to qualify for champions league. Also Aulas influence maybe behind why the DNCG chose to come back at Lyon this hard this season.
    Finally parting ways with both Dembele and Aourar absolutely made sens. Aoura was only the ghost of his former self, and Dembele didn't have hsi place in the squad with Lacazette coming into the squad

      Completely agree. The downfall basically started when Juninho left as key players like Guimaraes and Paqueta lost trust in the board.

      Not to mention Aualas failed to sell players where their market value was very high. Lyon lost opportunities to sell some of there young talents at premium profits like Houssem Aouar and instead of burn bridges with there players.

    In the past, Lyon is used to face the European giants like Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Manchester United, among the others. However, Lyon considered Real Madrid as the most luckier one. Because everytime both sides played each other in the Champions League, the French side went unbeaten between 2005 and 2010, winning three games (all at home) and drawing three games (all away). They also had two Champions League successful runs in 2010 and 2020, and you know who is the club that ended Lyon's big dream in both cases? Bayern Munich! The Germans beat them 3-0 in the semifinal.

    There is one thing that should be added in order to avoid people saying the DNCG is killing Lyon.
    Lyon is actually in breaching of regulations regarding financial security of the club and many lesser clubs have been relegated or denied promotion for less important breaches than Lyon. If anything the DNCG saved the club by not handing them an administrative relegation.

  • @Kafei01

    Lyon has been bought by leverage buy-out. Textor has no money himself, he sell the club properties (the women team, the venue next to the stadium...) to pay for his debt. He didn't have a cent to spent in the transfert window and so we only got low cost player who clearly don't have what it take to be competitive in Ligue 1.

    • @costek7
      @costek7 7 місяців тому +1

      Hi, a bit of context from a french supporter : DNCG didn't block Lyon from transfering because of à too large debt; but rather because of how Lyon ( and Textor ) were justifying the debt.
      The DNCG wanted 60M added on the Lyon bank account, whereas textor wanted to create à 60M account but under Eagle (the company managing all of textor's teams), saying that this money will
      Only be used for Lyon but failing to give garantees it will be used only for the french team and not Botafogo for example.
      Why PSG hasn't faced the same issues ? Because PSG, although having huge depts, has always proven to the DNCG it had the means to cover such debt if necessary.
      French Football, as pretty much all european teams, is loosing money every year, surviving only on added debt so the DNCG isn't too restrictive concerning having debt, but is monitoring quite strongly if clubs have enough resources to not be crushed by it.
      Hope it help !
