Ive been heavily slacking on playing the past couple of years but seeing my cousin hit number 2 on the rock radio charts and open for freaking marylin manson provides a little bit of inspiration
awesome..Review is good if for nothing else but to remind us how much we forgot..or just adapted into ones own repertoire ..lol..love the chug and scale xcercise ...very cool...Thank You
Hey Dave! Could we get a Soloing Secrets episode for metal month about either Glen Tipton or KK Downing from Judas Priest? Both are really awesome players! They have so much stuff you can learn from all the solos and licks they have played over the decades.
Great lesson, Dave! I haven't been on in a while, but I knew you'd have some great Halloween material! I dug your Goblin album too, keep up the good work.
You can get a ton of mileage out of minor pentatonic with an added maj 2nd. All your licks still work but that one extra note in there really puts a bowtie on it
That's a great question and honestly another video I should create. I'll make a video surrounding this topic next month (after "Metal Month"/October). But, if we're talking about playing over standard power chords - most players use basic pentatonic-based ideas, mixed with Aeolian/Nat. Minor ideas. That's the standard way of doing it and matching things. But from there, once things start getting more exotic and different chords/tonalities start happening, then the scales you use over those chords will need to match those sounds and be more exotic too. It's VERY important to remember that all chords come directly from scales. So, there's a chord that will match any scale, and vice-versa - scale that will match any chord (or chord progression). Needless to say, there's MUCH more where this came from and your question is literally the next step in understanding how to actually use this information. Knowing the scales is one thing, but knowing how to use them is something else entirely, and a great idea for a lesson in the near future! Good luck and most importantly - have some FUN! \m/ ROCK ON \m/
Great lesson. I play more in a New York Hardcore/ Crossover style so I don't throw in single note riffs that much but I'm just experimenting with using the scale intervals for power chords. Question, can I interchange these modes in the middle of a song, for instance can I use power chords from the Phrygian scale on a verse and power chords from the Locrian scale for the chorus... Since they're all modes of D it seems like that should work, I play in D standard by the way. Thanks again for the great lesson!!!
Hey again David, I have only recently discovered Axil Rudi Pell. I have been really stunned by some of his great music. Love the song “Eternal Prisoner” just wondering if you’ve heard much of his work before? Cheers Ewan

Well one thing you could do to start is to match the notes with the same chords in the scale

Nice shirt. What did you think of the recent adaptation?
We should be currently USING anything we run across that we've already learned 😂
Don't ya think ???
May I ask what amp you're using?
Behringer V-Amp I believe...
Please make 3 John frusciante licks vid 🥺
Um the d minor scale has a b flat and your playing an f sharp so which makes the d a major chord so what scale are you playing???????
These "metal" scales for some reason make me laugh...they are such comical cliches...like...for angry pre-pubescent boys.
