This week, Drewby and Yergy discuss black magic, cemeteries, and the chilling case of Anatoly Moskvin, a Russian scholar and linguist who rose to infamy due to a bizarre collection of life size dolls found within his home in 2011. What secrets do these dolls hold?

I thought that was very odd. Like he was ok with the weirdo having his daughters body. It seemed like he felt less of a father than the doll maker weirdo was pretending to be. Very, very strange.

The man had empathy after hearing the story. You could tell that guy has been around the block in life. He knows real pain only a few of us do. I would be shocked if it was my child but I wouldn’t want him to go to prison my god. These people are wrong for that. He just wanted a child. He was nothing but kind to the bodies. Poor guy. His mind just unraveled over time. He was never intimate with anyone. This was tough to watch. I’ll never forget this.

@@DanielleFoster. you are looking at this the wrong way. He was there, he heard the true stories. How could you not take pity with this poor sick man? I think I understand the father. He took a few steps back and looked at the entire picture. He also probably talked to this man 1 on 1. He forgave him. This was a very deep story I’ll never forget.

I don't know how to feel about this. Digging up bodies and desecrating graves...I'd be mad if someone did that to my kid, but he treated those "dolls" better than many people who are actually alive are treated. Wow. Crazy story for sure.

I have been working on a genealogy project for 7 years and I'll say that documented tombstones are appreciated because accurate birth and death dates matter so much. So many records have messy handwriting, have incorrect spelling, birth dates that are completely wrong are sometimes off by a decade because of language barriers and degraded paper (rot, insect damage, faded ink, water damage).

As a Russian I can tell you that we have several instances, especially easter, where we go and clean our families graves and leave them food that has been blessed by a priest. We have great respect for our ancestors as we know of their suffering. Drinking and eating near the graves is to have a meal with your dearly departed and to feel closer to them and show them int he afterlife that we still remember and love them even if they are no longer in this mortal world. It's comforting in a way.

When I was in my early 20's my nearest neighbours was a long forgotten cemetery... I was pregnant and was a stay at home mom with my stepdaughter. It got me interested in old cemeteries and since it made me sad that these graves (about 100) were abandoned that I started being the being the unknown caretaker mowing, weeding, fixing the broken headstones and then cleaning each one off of dirt and moss.
Thankfully I never went to the lengths of this guy 🤣

@@TheMiseryMachine I really enjoyed doing it ... The graves really told a story of times and it was heartbreaking because more than half of the graves were children. One family had a mother and five children die within days of eachother (given the dates I'd guess maybe the Spanish flu)... But later I also did chalkings of the headstones. My husband thought it was a weird interest and though the it would have a negative impact on our kids. I argued that I was teaching the kids several life lessons... Respecting the dead, history of why there might have been clusters of deaths in a short time frame, you don't always get paid for doing the right thing (early on my stepdaughter asked why I was doing it if nobody was paying me to) and most importantly compassion for others.
I asked April (my SD) how she would feel if it was me that was buried there and then forgotten about...

I remember hearing about this one, and my emotional journey. You hear about a man taking bodies of little girls, and you think, "aw Christ, he was fucking them, wasn't he?". And then you learn all the details, and if you're me, your heart just breaks for the guy.
So crazy, but I feel like he has a decent heart. His Mama tried to raise him right, damn it. He dressed them, he took care of them, he fucking loved them, in a dad way, like little girls should be loved. It's so fucked up, but if you actually think about his reality, it's honestly sweet. Even his viciousness, if you think of it as a defensive reaction to perceived child neglect, it makes sense.
Ostensibly same people are out here torturing their own babies to death, and here's this crazy man, showing real love to the corpses of total strangers. Crazy as a Betsy bug, but there are far worse people out here.

In a different time period, or if he simply took a tooth from them in the hopes to clone them in the future, he’d be considered a saint or ground breaking scientists. He is taking current knowledge and theories, plus emotions (not to mention personal trauma) and justifying his actions. To us, on a certain basis, it makes sense. After all, some want to honor their dead by burying them and others try to mummify them.

There is an old cemetary near my house that I go to frequently. I will usually stop off at the dollar store on my way there to pick up small toys, plastic flowers, and flower seeds on the way; or even a bouquet if it was during the first pay period of the month. I leave the little toys on the children's Graves, especially the ones that have been gone for a very long time and likely having no one to come see them anymore. Then, I leave plastic flowers, scatter flower seeds, or leave a flower from the bouquet on the graves of older people who have been gone too long to have anyone coming to see them anymore. It's also in a place vulnerable to strong winds, so I'll pick up re-set up anything left by families that the wind knocked down.

It seems like this isn't too uncommon of a practice because graveyards I've frequented over the years I've seen similar things left on graves that are far too old to have known surviving relatives, and I wondered if this was just a good person leaving them on the graves of the forgotten. Best retelling of this case I have ever come across! Well done, your time is much appreciated. You touched upon some very human aspects of the case that have me thinking that he had undiagnosed ASD. Especially the touch aversion ( sensory issues leading him to want celibacy), taking hobbies too far to an obsessive degree, seeking isolated places, etc. “personifying” and treating a corpse as if it were alive also seems to fall into this view. Many people I know with ASD find dolls very comforting to interact with, as they offer safety and predictability. They tend to project a lot onto inanimate objects and can often blur the line in understanding that they are not actually alive. Again, it’s impossible to justify what he did, but he also sounds like someone who didn’t get the intervention he needed.

It seems like he was quite happy when he was teaching children. He didn't attempt to harm them then. Maybe that should have been the extent of his interaction with children. I sympathize with the father who refused restitution. 💔 This is a cautionary tale for parents. Don't let anyone love your children better than you. thanks for going into detail on this man and his case; i have always found it really fascinating and unnerving. i am an avid doll collector but this case and the police video of the search of moskvin's apartment is the reason i'm kinda freaked out by small-child-sized dolls. i love almost all dolls, but any of them that really look like 4-7 year olds squick me out ever since seeing this case

I studied at the university in st. Petersburg and lived in Russia for a year so a couple things I thought I'd add:
    1. I was advised by Russians to never hitchhike and to be wary of taxis that aren't labeled a certain way. Since anatoly is male and Russian his safety with hitchhiking is much higher than mine.
2.i felt like people in Russia viewed death and cemeteries differently than in the US. There is a reverence, but also an acceptance that it's the next stage of life. I enjoyed their cemeteries and it wasn't unusual to see people in the cemetery reminiscing with their family/friends that had passed or having a picnic.
3.hoarding is just as bad as Russia as it is elsewhere. This was the most surprising to me, but it also seemed to be tied to how they handled trauma and major events like the end of communism.

What he did to the corpses is horrific, but it's a manifestation of his pain and fears. I'm 51 and we never were able to have kids. We took care of my Dad when he was dying, and we took care of Mom before she died in March. I have no one to take care if me when I hit my 70s or 80s, or if I'm dying early due to cancer etc. No one to take care of my dogs and keep them all together. No cousins locally, nor friends in state (military). No grandkids. No aunts or uncles. So I do understand the pain that drove him to do this. I understand the fear, especially after how much work we put in to make my parents comfortable at home instead of dumping them in a nursing home.

I really love the father who denied the restitution...saying he treated his daughter better than he did when she was alive. From what I've read..I don't believe he is schizophrenic and I don't think he should be locked up and medicated into a coma. Yeah...it's pretty awful up and he fucked up some of the families pretty badly I'm sure...but he wasn't trying to hurt anyone. He had such empathy for the girls and that's what led to his crimes...not evil. Sounds like maybe he is autistic with some other mental issues.

100%, this is an extremely good point. People often forget that to the person having the hallucinations, they are often JUST as real as reality to them. Even if they realize later on these things didn't happen to them, the memory is still there, the feelings, the chemical reaction in the body, etc, is all still there and affecting the body and mind

the Soviet Union was notorious for abusing psychiatry as an indefinite punishment for certain people. the situation has not markedly changed in Russia, so you can't really compare the psychiatric treatment and confinement in Russia, especially as a consequence of a trial, to the same thing in other countries.
this problem is reasonably well documented. nevertheless Russia has officially stated that there is no problem, so it's doubtful anything will change in the near future.
I have no doubts about the insanity of Moskvin. instead I have my doubts about his so-called treatment, since most likely its purpose is to keep him confined indefinitely. I don't think they're really trying to make him a productive member of society, so it's just life in prison with chemical lobotomy and no possibility of parole or a successful appeal.

Also, about drinking in graveyards. As an eastern european (a Pole from the more eastern side of the country) I can say, now it is not that common, but my grandmother and mother can recall that some of our aquaintances have been doing this. There's an evidence that maybe most of our ancestors have been doing it beacause we also drink at the wakes (called "stypa") after the funeral.
There's also a tradition on the 1s & 2nd of November (All souls' day or "zaduszki") to visit the graves of the loved ones and I've heard that in the region very close to eastern border, there's still a tradition to drink to celebrate the memory of the people who passed. What I've heard is that some groups of Roma people are also doing this.

Okay firstly if I recall there's an old saying that to be insane is a fine line between insanity and genius and that's I guess we call it a proverb but I've never actually heard of this guy and I'm into a lot of the stories like this however that's neither here nor there I would just like to make a comment to the two host of the show and I'm just trying to help you out here I like your show I just happen to think your format needs a little tweaking because a lot of the shows I've watched you have your emblem on the screen and we hear you talking but we don't see anything just your emblem or you might know cut in with a little something for intro or whatever personally and I know you probably done this but if you look up a couple other shows like Mr Ballin and AFC you'll see that the host are visible through the entire commentary and there's always something in the background you know whether it's pictures of the house they lived in or or just random pictures of what seems to be ill if it happened in the forest was a picture of a forest you know but I would like to see you actually put something like that in place because if you're watching it you know if you're watching the the show then what you're getting really is your emblem and that's and you talking I would much rather see the two of you on there because again you see the expressions you see the human empathy that you have and that makes for a really good show so you can ask your other subscribers cuz I am one what they may think because I think it would boost your ratings a lot have a great night

This actually brought me to tears, the sincerity that this guy exudes in his desire to genuinely do right by these girls is oddly inspiring as off putting as his methods where. I am playing a oddly wholesome Necromancer in D&D and they will be based on Anatoly's example. They will speak to the dead and offer closure in whatever way they can, preserve there history, and maybe even be able to give some of them a chance at returning on occasion given enough funds and access to powerful enough healers.

    Great work.
Dreams are mysterious. I always felt dreams are away of the subconscious reaching a person when the head is silent. Nightmares I always found reflection of the trauma a person endured or insecurities that are bothersome.
Writing down dreams can be fantastic tool for shadow work.
People do seem to have a disbelief in the cycle of hurt. It doesn’t seem logical for many. Why would anyone want to put another through the same misery.
Deep pain is very complicated. Often accompanied with distrust so expressing the pain can be challenging.

I’m tickled with the two of you and the cemetery chitchat. I didn’t know you guys were into that. I used to spend a lot of time at an old cemetery at The Baptist Church in Yorktown NY where I grew up. Most of the headstones were early 1800s.
There was a newer one though, I believe from the 50s or 60s, it was pink marble and had a big heart engraved on it. It was the resting place of a little girl and it was so sad to me. I spent a lot of time by that headstone thinking about her. I should go back someday and give her some flowers. ❤

Every August 14th, the anniversary of the day Grandpa died, I go down to the cemetery where he’s buried and I pick one small group of graves, I clean them, leave a flower, and I write down the name(s) on the stone so I can remember them later. I always try to remember names, because it remembers the person, even if you didn’t know them.

I grew up exploring graveyards with my mother. It was something we enjoyed doing together. We use to take paper and crayons with us to place over very old grave stones that were hard to read and etching the crayon overtop to reveal the name and dates of the deceased. It was peaceful exploring them and I enjoyed it. My mother and I also use to go through the local forests to excavate for old bottles and such, as well, some items dating from the early 1900s. There’s something intriguing about olden times and the people who lived during that time.

To touch on the attractiveness point
I think it is actually important to point out when these bad people look attractive or normal
Often times you hear in crime documentaries “oh he looked so normal so I thought I would be fine” and I think it’s important to try to break that thinking. Just because someone looks put together or attractive doesn’t mean they won’t be an absolute monster.

I think it's sad for all parties. The families of the girls, the offender, the dead girls.. all sad. Now with how he studied many cultures and rituals regarding the dead, he may have been influenced by cultures that view digging up and changing corpses to be honoring the deceased. Not all cultures treat the dead the same way. Many many different things are seen as honoring and they may seem bizarre or abhorrent to those in countries who believe in modern burial methods and not doung anythingwith remains later.
