- Utwór Toma Waitsa w musicalu "The Black Rider"
There is a light in the forest
There is a face in the tree
I'll pull you out of the chorus
And the first one's always free
You can never go a-hunting
With just a flintlock and a hound
You won't go home with a bunting
If you blow a hundred round
It takes much more than wild courage
Or you'll hit the tattered clouds
You must have just the right bullets
And the first one's always free
You must be careful in the forest
Broken glass and rusty nails
If you're to bring back something for us
I have bullets for sale
Why be a fool when you can chase away
Your blind and your gloom
I have blessed each one of these bullets
And they shine just like a spoon
To have sixty silver wishes
Is a small price to pay
They'll be your private little fishes
And they'll never swim away
I just want you to be happy
That's my only little wish
I'll fix your wagon and your musket
And the spoon will have it's dish
And I shudder at the thought
of your Poor empty hunter's pouch
So I'll keep the wind from your barrel
And bless the roof of your house - Розваги
I love how in this rendition of the song the 'victim' finishes the line "I just want you to be happy". Not the Devil's words but his own belief and expectation of what's being sold to him.
I thought he was being controlled by the devil when he said that, like a puppet or a person hypnotized.
Dominique Horwitz is just brilliant here. His moving is outstanding and at the end (when he starts dropping the bullets) it almost looks like slow motion, and all the time having contact to the audience as well. Perfect!
Horwitz was absolutely made for this role
The version of Gospel Train in this play is incredibly powerful. Just the Right Bullets is supposed to be somewhat bone-chilling, and I think the actor playing Wilhelm here did it masterfully. He's frightened, but he wants to be "happy", as he himself says. Of course, Horwitz was playful and charming, as the devil should be.
Saw this, front row, Vancouver, BC; the show was unbelievable. As a big fan of Burroughs and Tom Waits I was drawn to their demonic love child. I'm not a big fan of eccentric theater people, but the group that put this on was possessed by the terrible tale. They drew me in and tore me a new soul.
Wow lucky uu
I saw it in Vancouver too! It was amazing!
Dominique Horwitz is just amazing... I hope he'll get his Tarantino moment one day.
This is exactly how I act and speak when someone tells me to "just act natural"
There seems to be some confusion.
The Black Rider is the story of Wil. A professional of some sort (banker, lawyer or something) in the love with the daughter of a hunter. The hunter will grant him his daughter's hand if he can hunt. Will goes hunting and only brings back a bird. Given another chance the devil offers him "magic bullets". Will gets a stag and is soon wed. At the wedding he proves himself by showing his hunting. A magic bullet kills his wife and he goes to the devil's circus
I mean if you're just gonna spoil it, it's also a direct alegory to the way William Burroughs' drug addiction took over his life and lead to him shooting his own wife in the peak of his career
You got to be kidding! I would love to have seen that. Horwitz's performance on this song is one of a kind.
I can't thank you enough for posting this. We saw the play twice when it was in Los Angeles. I loved it so much the first time that I made my husband take me to see it again, If you ever get the chance to see it performed live, GO! You won't regret it...
i mustve watched this two dozen times in the last week. i can't stop. it's so right!
We watched the whole play at school years ago and I keep coming back to this song.
I'm so addicted to this!
It is a shame that this hasn't been produced and released as a major work.
It totally has. It’s incredibly nuanced and expensive to put on. That’s why it has not taken off. It’s just not palatable to some audiences.
i feel violated
I think you're forgetting the context for which the songs were written. The play is ostensibly about a hunter who makes a deal with the devil. The references to addiction are layered on top of that, primarily through the lyrics of the songs.
It's good to see that emcee found work after the cabaret.
so glad to see this! Thanks for posting.
Bloody Phenomenal. Bravo. Absolutely love it.
As for me...this production captures Black Rider by force.
OOOHG!!! Adoro esta versión de The black rider!! Ojalá hubiera estado allí viendolo!!
One of my favorite shows.
OMG i love this musical so much.
Great one indeed
Great Stuff. Thanks for uploading. It´s a shame that this isn´t available on DVD.
I saw the play just a few days ago in an openair-theater, with the forest in the background. It was just brilliant!
Oh man. Outstanding
You took the video/play to literal. I think it's awesome.

the first one´s always free
simply amazed
very nice!
Awesome
I never heard of the play or book before - my loss. Immediately thought of The Tiger Lillies, though.
😂
I saw it in NYC when it opened. Burroughs on the scene as well.
thanks for this
the gereatest I ever saw .. Thalia Hamburg 2. day after premiere
Thanks!
...melancholia...🎶
Who in their right mind could refuse?
Just found out today that the album The Black Rider was actually made in conjunction with this show, and that the arrangements on the album differ from the ones in the play.
Interesting to see/hear how this song was originally intended, in context. Burroughs seems a bit sketchy as a person, but this is certainly an interesting project. And I’m a big awaits fan, so I’m putting aside the cognitive dissonance around Burroughs as much as I can for mor of that good Waits content.
But doesn't Burrough's sketchyness even elevate the content in this case?
I love it :) also love robert wilson
exellent!! BRAVO...i m an Actor (Theatre spcl) and i start thinking seriously to make it here in greece....very difclt (the audience, the story for here) but we ll see....
bravo again to the Actors....
i prefer this version too :o
It was written for the play.
the guy in the red is the way he walks an act
yeah they're on a stage, everything they do is an act
My friend told me that his name is peg leg so he is walking like he has one.
Heroin dealer? The Musical "Black Ryder" is based on the opera "Der Freischütz" by Carl Maria von Weber. But there is always enough room for various interpretations, isn't there? By the way, you can come to Hamburg, Germany and hear Dominique Horwitz sing that song live in concert in the Schauspielhaus. The Premiere is tomorrow!
Seriously... I must have this VHS or DVD or whatever it is!
Give us the source!
Is this the German production? the Thalia theater?
yes, it is
I wonder if Tim Burton was influenced by this show, it's stylistically reminiscent of him.
In a way. It's a German expressionist cinema aesthetic - it would be more correct to say they took their influences from the same source.
this wipes the floor with everything tim burton has ever done

I'd really like to see this play, and I'm not a theatre fan.
You're missing a few parts. None of the torrents of this program have act 3 part 3 for some reason...
I think I'm in that part of youtube again.
I would probably come :p
This is the definitive edition of this masterpiece. Arguably even better than Tom's own.
the devil has a realy realy big mouth. O.o
This is very cool... But Tom's version's SO much better, don't ya think?
I thought so too, at first. The thing i love about this performance are the abrupt transitions between the calm/slow bits and the energetic ones. Gives off a fitting vibe of being lured into a devilish bargain that can go topsy turvy at the drop of a hat
This version is better than Tom Waits'
+MaxMustermann Behave yourself.
I love Tom Waits, he is one of my favourites! But for me, this version just kills it. And I am sure Mr Waits would agree
+MaxMustermann You know what? I have watched this a few times now & I have to agree with you. So in essence, I stand corrected (said the man in the orthopaedic shoes!).
BabyIveBeenWaiting
haha ok, glad to hear that... Have a good day.. Cheers
I think I kinda agree with you...
This in no way captures the seriousness of tom waits black rider. A lot of his lyrics even previous to that album are related to addiction and even though waits has a sense of humour...they aren't really a joke to some of us. Waits has lived it. He knows the score.
But this play is exactly what Waits wrote the songs for, it's their original context.
In my opinion, this play doesn't make a joke of it at all. I see how this scene isolated can seem comedic, but the full story is a tragedy. This devils bargain ruins the characters life. I also think the charming playful nature of "the devil" selling him "bullets" is faithful to many people's first experiences with drugs; no one does them because they want to nor believe they will end up addicted and miserable, they do them looking for something better, whatever that might be, and believing they can control it. Just like our main character.
The fuck is this?!
And most of the population thinks Wait's voice is obnoxious...
This voice is 10 times worse. I guess some people think they can sing dissonance, merely because they can't hit the right notes.
They took this song way to literal, its about heroin and a heroin dealer
No, you smack head.
Thank you for this🙏👏🙏👏🙏🥹
