    "XC racers are known to run thin fast rolling tires" -> lately that thinking has been changing, as people are learning that wider tires do not roll slower. They tend to roll faster. Riders are learning this in road, gravel, and XC. And tire weight is never the issue, not even worth looking at or measuring. Measure the rolling resistance, try to guess at or measure the durability, try to feel the grip difference. Don't worry about weight. Even with rotational inertia considered into the equation it amounts to almost nothing.

    I just had a bit of a freak accident on Sunday while wearing all my PPE except for my riding goggles. My kit was torn up. My Leatt chest protector, shoulder pads, elbow pads and knee pads all came into play on this one. My full face helmet took a huge hit on the chin but I took a round tree cutting right between the eyes and my riding glasses were obliterated. Fractured eye socket and what felt like a thousand stitches around both eyes. Goggles would’ve saved me.
    I ride solo more often than not because I don’t know anyone locally who rides like I do. I carry a trauma kit for my self first and then for others. Tourniquet, bleed stop, laceration bandages, puncture patch, survival blanket and a whistle. It all fits in my Fernhill EDC pack on my Turbo Levo.
    I wear more safety gear than anyone I know. It’s only me who truly knows how fast I’m going and how close I’m pushing the edge. I came conscious fast enough to still be able to count the drops of blood on the ground. Untangled my self, made sure my eye was still in its socket then kept that eye closed for a 20 minute -proper downhill trail, before driving my self an hour to a proper hospital in Santa Barbara.
    I definitely felt like a badass, soldiering my way out of trouble. I got my self into the mess so I was going to do everything I could to get my self out of it. I didn’t end up using any of my trauma kit because it was my face that took the hit and I wasn’t going to be able to see what I was doing. Having a trauma kit strapped to your bike is just as confidence inspiring as wearing the proper amount of PPE. You should want to be able to save your self and others when SHTF

      BRO. Fuken hell, glad it wasnt worse. Def gonna wear my goggles for mega even though goggles usually aint my thing unless they really are necessary for the riding

    Tourniquet... Losing all your blood will make your day not so good.
    Head and neck stuff, shouldn't be moved.
    Other is time, place, circumstance... i.e. easier for you to get to Medic or vice versa

    Gauze, cloth tape, povidone iodine, triple antibiotic, alcohol wipes, waterproof bandages, paper towels, tweezers, lighter, razors, sewing needles and thread.

    In all seriousness though, carrying a first aid kit is a very sensible idea but it's not something me or my usual crew ever do, maybe we should be 🤔

    When we talk about tires, for me personally Vittoria Barzo 2.35 is go to tire for dry and muddy terain. I have been riding few marathon races on those tires on muddy trails, I was really suprised how good grip those tires have on mud and speed as well on dry sections.
    I would love if Vittoria made those tires in 2.4 format, it would be perfect.

      Try the Syerra 2.4 on the front,and you are set!
      It's a awesome tire, I use it front and rear and cannot praise it enough.

      @@theymademepickaname1248 right! I have mates that are like that and its bizarre. "I wanted that tyre but it was only a 2.2 not 2.25, it would be so much better if it was 2.25". Meanwhile Maxxis 2.2 and 2.25 casings are both 57mm. People spend more time worrying about whether a tyre is 2.4 or 2.35 and act like that's what's holding the average cyclist back haha.
      I'm more worried about tyres being true to size and rather measure casings. I have 2.5" tyres that measure 60mm and and 2.35s that measure 62mm.

      @@lucideuphoria7092 it's because you tubers and marketing departments push certain trends like tire width and head tube angles, and people follow it like little sheep. The average rider would never notice a degree difference here or 1/4 inch there.

    Instead of carrying an ace bandage, I carry vet wrap. It is the best bandaging, is stretchy, sticks to itself so doesn't require fasteners and best of all comes in some funky colour's! And bonus, you can use if on your 4 legged Companion if they come with you.

    I cannot recommend more doing a woofer class (wilderness first responder) even if you don’t keep up the certifications it’s extremely useful. But at a minimum first aid/aed classes are regularly available and it’s a fun thing to do with your group of friends. Also a tourniquet is a must for me. Even if you break a leg you can still nick the femoral artery. Plus a tourniquet and be stashed away in many places. You can even rubber band one to your top tube if you don’t have space.

    Thats when you see how good the xc riders are here, most of us use DHF max grip 2.5 wide and feel we are good in sacary sections, try that whit Ikons 2.2 Wide max speed and 120 m travel and wet wet trails

    Elbow pad Henry now - whatcha using for pads anyway? It's not a bad idea and I used to run them... Just wasn't thrilled with the options at the time.

    8:55 yes take a first aid kit. I'm a paramedic and having bleeding control is important. I have one of those osprey fanny packs and it's got a couple bike maintenance things and then the rest is first aid. I would argue carrying a CAT tourniquet (make sure you know how and when to use it) is really important as well.

      Most MTB riders injure the shoulder and rarely have gnarly life threatening bleeds. In terms of fatalities you’re gonna save more lives carrying a needle decompression needle rather than a TQ. I’ve seen way more people die of a tension pneumo and have never seen a life threatening bleed requiring a TQ from riding a bike.

    My favorite tires ever were the Maxxis Hookworms with the soft durometer. Grippy on everything except loose over hardpack. Even on ice they were great! (Im not a racer. just a rider)

    The Crans Montana course designer team was the same who built the 2012 Olympic XCO course, their two main objectives/specializations are 'making obstacles out of nowhere' in seemingly uninspiring locations, such as landfills or here, in this relatively uninteresting Swiss forest, and making the course spectator friendly with exciting to watch and well visible parts, sometimes at the expense of rider's security.
