Steve Vai's string noise is not random. He can replicate it. Same with Joe Satriani. That's what makes them stand out. Older players such as Hendrix and Page had actual random noise from loose playing, but they could never play the same solo twice.
Oh... My... Goodness... My Dear Jill, I have only just seen this performance now (Sep 23) and I am so absolutely touched by it. You did such a lovely job, thank you so much. It's always an honor and a pleasure to see another artist play one of my pieces, and that you performed it so lovely, with great intonation, wonderful use of harmonics and dynamics, and most of all, you played with your heart and soul which brings this melody so alive on the violin. What an absolute treat for me to see. It's always inspiring for me to hear my music played so beautifully. A big hug to you, and deep appreciation. Steve Vai
Made me cry... I've been a guitar player for almost 20 years and I never found this level of beauty on the cover of a classic song. Thank you for this rebirth of culture.
It's entirely possible that I've listened to the original song more times than almost anyone. Man, does she nail it. Every little nuance and phrase. She captures the feel of the song better than I've ever seen on any instrument.
This is a particularly difficult solo to transcribe for other instruments. Steve has a unique way of playing. Jill was able to capture each nuance again in an incredible way. And it also brought a different atmosphere ... Fantastic!
I expected her to do just fine on all the slides (not too different than some Paganini or Ernst style cadenzas) and given Steve has a very wide, violin like vibrato (though not Yngwie levels) that wasn't going to be much of an issue. The thing that blew me away was how seamlessly she managed the weird inversions and chord voicings and how the hell was she getting that much volume and power on the harmonics, damn!
@@mksland3884 Steve needs to perform it with Jill (violinist in this video) someday. I don't know how is his right hand healing now but Jill can totally back him on this. She learned this entire piece in 1 week (that is 1 week from never hearing it before to recording it). Plus she can really use some publicity, the only reason she had to market herself for the first time in her 30+ year playing career is because of pandemic, live-focused non-marketed musicians got hit hard.
Getting this difficult piece technically right is one thing. It's hard...but that's what skilled classical violinists DO, and Jill has mad chops. But also capturing the feel of the piece so well that the hair on the back of my neck was standing up...that's mastery. Huge shout-out to Ogawa and Fumiya, too: the rhythm section makes or breaks a downtempo song like this, and they killed it.
She got the bowing so right to match the attacks on the original piece....also the sus and legatos and little tone changes that make this song so rich, but also difficult
Would love to hear their cover of Ne Obliviscaris' "And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope". She obviously qualifies. Even though, the song has been added into the Sydney Conservatorium Music Studies curriculum...I still believe they can handle it.
Well Jill has been playing the violin for over 30 years since before she learned to speak and is gifted (she has a condition where her visual cortex part of the brain processes sound information so her perception of sound is unique, just like you see unique colors, she distinctly percepts every possible frequency pitch in her hearing range), and it only took her 1 week from hearing this tune for the first time to recording it for this cover record, she also said it was the hardest piece on the cover record for her, so all this put together basically means she cake-walked through these guitar virtuosos
JILL has a perfect pitch. No, not where many talented musicians have perfect pitch hearing relative to other notes. She has perfect pitch in that one note and she can tell you what note that is. She is a very unusual person. She started violin at age 3. She learned violin before knowing the notes. She played by hearing. She sees the world in sound. Yeah, a very unusual person.
I love the fact that she used an acoustic violin rather than an electric one. As a player of both violin and guitar i cannot even begin to fathom how difficult this must be. and all that too with a crooked bow!!!!
I play drums and guitar and watching these Quadratum vids has a been a treat, because of the way similar techniques on guitar and violin intersect. Far Beyond the Sun had lots of long scale runs going down the fingerboard, but mainly on just 2 strings so they're pretty linear and her bow stayed on a relatively even line. The Racer X stuff makes her go to string crossings, needing all 4 strings and changing her bowing angle a lot, more or less replicating the way Gilbert loves string skipping in his phrasing, and for Vai its silky long slides, vibrato just dripping with passion and harmonics that beggar belief. Jill is just a beast, though Fumiya and Hiro bring the thunder as well.
Oh. MAN. The original is one of the most intense and beautiful instrumentals I've ever heard, from one of America's greatest guitar legends. Jill-san made it her own. I bet that the Maestro Vai himself would be impressed with this, if he isn't already. My admiration for her has jumped up several notches, for sure!
Jill is amazing and a gifted musician ('absolute pitch' and her sense of timing is impeccable). She has been playing violin since age 3 and for over 30 years, she can play absolutely anything from Paganini and Bach to this. I heard her play Jazz and Latin melodies and harmonies in another video and it was absolutely mesmerizing. This particular piece from Steve Vai she figured out in 1 week (that is from hearing it for the first time to recording it!) and also it was the hardest guitar piece for her from this cover album, she basically breezed through electric guitar virtuosos.
Well, dunno about you all, but I had to take a moment to compose myself.
