HISTORICAL ACCURACY:
In this video, I tell the tale of how the most notorious 3 card monte hustler -- Canada Bill Jones -- died completely penniless. These stories from Gambling Scams by Darwin Ortiz and the wider world of general gambling-history lore. Understand that, since all of this stuff happened over a century ago, we often don't know exactly what was said, but I've done my best to re-imagine certain conversations and events in a realistic (and entertaining) way based on available information. For more history on Canada Bill's life, check out this article: www.legendsofa.... The images of Canada Bill and of the Faro Game are from google images and fall under fair use standards. No copyright infringement is intended.
THE RULES OF FARO:
I had to simplify the rules of Faro in a number of ways to keep the video from being 30 minutes long. For example, if you bet on a value that doesn't match the winning card or the losing card, your bet just stays on the layout. You can leave it there, remove it, or even move it to a different value before the next round. However, the biggest modification I made was that you don't remove the spades from a deck and then play faro with that same deck. Rather, the game is always played with a 52-card deck, and the spade layout is either built into the table or removed from a different deck of cards. If you want to learn to play the game for real, watch this video: • How To Play Faro .
THE FARO SHUFFLE:
You might have heard of a shuffle named after the game of faro. The shuffle goes like this: you split the deck exactly in half (26 and 26), then weave the two halves together perfectly, every-other-card. Yes, it is as difficult to master as it sounds. I made a whole video about that shuffle here: • CARD CHEATING Techniqu... . This shuffle wasn't used to cheat at faro. Rather, it was used to keep the game fair. Because in faro, the cards are dealt in pairs, if those pairs don't get "split up" during the shuffles, the same pairs will be dealt out the next round. Dealers would use the faro shuffle to split up these pairs, so for their purposes, the split and the weave probably didn't have to be exact. Magicians have repurposed this shuffle in various ways, most of which are best kept secret. :)
CREDITS:
The 3 card monte phases at the beginning are based on the work of Darwin Ortiz, Dai Vernon, Ricky Jay, Richard Turner, and S.W. Erdnase. The location of the spades is a slight variation of Darwin Ortiz's routine 12 the Hard Way, published in Lessons in Card Mastery. The subsequent production of the hearts makes use of ideas from Benjamin Earl, Johnny Benzais, Jose Carroll, Dai Vernon, Ricky Jay, and Hofzinser. The modern incarnation of the suit production was invented by Ricky Jay, who was apparently inspired by a Hofzinser idea. The location of the clubs and diamonds in pairs is based on A Matching Routine by Ed Marlo, published in Faro Controlled Miracles.

You know he's cheating you, you might even know how he's cheating you, but it's so smoothly and beautifully done that you can't help but be entertained... as he takes all your money. Superb stuff, as always, Mr Roy.
thanks!
The fact this looks to be 1 continuous take, with perfect dialogue & handling throughout is truly baffelling.
A master of the art good Sir!
This is a real masterpiece of card magic, with an amazing presentation and story telling to result in a so great routine, and even more amazing effortless-seeming sleights with great variety. With each effect you put another smile on my face, thanks a lot for that!!! :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Always great to see you handle the cards. They just do what you want, regardless of what people think they should do.
Now that I've watched so many of your videos, I get suggestions on every card cheating story around UA-cam! But your dexterity and natural motions always amaze me, and I thoroughly enjoy your storytelling around cards. Thank you very much for these o so enjoyable and informative videos!
2 years old...randomly came up in my YT feed. Fantastic. The references to an old game, gamblers, SoH history...you rock.
Wow this is really good, and we even learned about Faro which actually looks like a nice game. I also like the dice work really gives the routine a “gambling” kinda feel.
Glad you enjoyed!
I've seen some amazing card tricks and skills in my day. This is just....amazing. While I can see his card handling is very "deliberate" and "precise", I really cannot comprehend how he can do these things.
Thank you very much!
at 7:55 the deck is symmetrical, how he locates the cards is beyond me, but I think its interesting how he has complete control over the deck
I loved the three card monte at the beginning, it was a nice touch. I learned your routine for it from the levels of three card monte video. Some of the things I see in this video I know how to do it, but then the way you do it makes it hard to follow and I can’t figure it out. Great trick!
Hi Daniel! This is a fabulous routine and I recognize what it is an outgrowth of. I really appreciate the hard work you put into working this out. I'm looking forward to taking another lesson from you next time I'm in NYC. All the best!
Great presentation, Daniel. You have the soul of a teacher and with your smarts and skills you’re a polished entertainer. Quite a combination!
Daniel's going to have everyone playing Faro again. It's really well done, and switching it up by getting away from poker for a gambling routine was awesome. Bravo! 👍🏻👏🏼
The die was a nice twist! I'm curious how honest that die is, and what your out would be if you got a double. Also fun to see a faro shuffle in its natural habitat!
in this case, it is a fair die -- when I do this routine live, I just have the audience members name a value or call out "stop," but lacking an audience in my studio, a die was the next best thing
@@DanielRoyMagic very well thought out!
Interesting thought, and the same one I had. Especially after the way he was able to run with what was left.
He already explained what he'd do if he got a double - the answer was "don't get a double". If you're that good at handling cards, then you'd never deal a double.
I appreciate that you credit the folks who designed the base effects that you use / modify for your routine. Your mastery of the various techniques on display here is impressive.
If I could offer one observation - You may be able to go with a lighter touch during your DLs. It looks like you're using a lot of thumb to keep things clean, but it makes it visually different than what came before.
Only a minor comment offered in the spirit of improvement though, and not intended to be any sort of criticism of a truly masterful performance.
Seems that the entire video (with card manipulation) was done in one take without cuts. This would mean you would have had to nail the progression of cards throughout in that single take. Impressive if this is what you did!
Yup, and it took a looonnngggg time to get the entire sequence just right. Mainly because I get 95% of the way through, and then stumble over my words and have to start over.
Wow! That sounds either fun or extremely annoying! Either way, from my perspective it was unbelievable how you didn’t mess up a single thing.
@@DanielRoyMagic So you're finding it more difficult to get your tongue to cooperate than it is for you to get the cards to cooperate?
@@gabrielrockman Pretty much lol
I really like your presentation. You are really smooth
Wow! Amazing video! I got into card magic because of your videos, they inspire me to practice to get great results like these.
Happy to hear that!
That Thud you heard was from my Jaw dropping and hitting the floor in Amazement!
You just gave me a brighter joy than experiencing magic, I just realized how the last half of the video was made! Recently started watching your videos and getting into sleight of hand, and for the first time I managed to understand how something was done prior to explanation, that feels great! I think it is time for a sub now
Your card handling is so smooth
The handling of the cards is absolutely spellbinding, you sir are a master at work.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Wow !!! That is an amazing card control man.. it is unthinkable...
What a wonderful routine with a great kind of pure sleight of hand skills. Love it!
So quality and good content! Greetings from 🇩🇪
Awesome, thank you!
Clean performance! Over such a long time
9:11 top switch
Each video of yours make me want to buy some deck of cards and practice some tricks. Should really do it.
I really wish there was a breakdown of hiw these tricks are done amazingly performed btw
I love this type of videos
another amazing video, keep it up man you inspired me to start doing sleight :)
You're the greatest youtube magician ! Its beautiful.
Another fantastic video, great job!
Incredible as always!
thank you!
wtf? i do magic with playing cards for 15 years and that's how long it would take me to reconstruct this trick. Insane trick
Simply sublime skill with cards, great video Daniel! :) Is the faro shuffle by any chance derived from this game, or at least its name?
Yes, it is! added a section to the description all about this. I also talk about it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/blZEIs4Shzk/v-deo.html
yeah the faro shuffle comes from the game. it's supposed to be a perfect shuffle so it is harder to draw pairs
@@DanielRoyMagic Thank you, will check that out :)
@@HaddingtonJamesBearThe3rdJr. Nice, thank you :)
First-class, as always. A joy to watch.
Many thanks!
When you said "I have to be prepared to any possible outcome" (06:42), I was expecting you to roll the dice get a repeated number (2 or 5) and then pull out a repeated card (of hearts) from the deck.
So well done!
Remarkable skill. Always blown away
I love your videos so much. Always full of knowledge about card magic and great entertainment.
Thanks so much!
This video is extremely entertaining. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love this vid !
Always so fun watching. Just too damn good and every move is done so smoothly.
Great routine all-round.
U deserve a lot more subs dude
This routine is amazing, but I AM curious about something. If the player bets on a card that doesn't match either the winning or losing card, what happens?
Wow, just wow. This is awesome. So flawless, so good. I'm actually fooled af.
Remarkable. I believe you've filled my Ricky Jay void.
Straight up witchcraft with cards! Lol
You definitely have amazing card handling skills!
Gotta say I learned a bit of history today from a card trick master
great sleight of hand roy!
This 3 card monte top-tossing is executed sooooooo smoothly. I tried to reproduce it. I even figured out I can cheat a bit by using asymetrical bending - skewing bend of two cards -3 and +3 degrees off symetry line causes them to not lay flush on top of each other and making holding only bottom card easier to throw top one. But I was not even close to your dexterity and smoothness of moves.
Simply brilliant 👍😊👍😊
Thanks a lot 😊
great video
Thanks!
master of the craft. truly beautiful.
Hey Daniel, do you remember where you got that 6-pack card case on the right of the video frame?
Great video and amazing technique. What’s that trick called?
Take a look at the description :)
soo good!!!
I can’t fathom how this is even possible.
So that's where the name Faro Shuffle came up..
Astonishing!
Your skill with cards is just out of this world, best that I've ever seen, and I've watched all P&T Fool us seasons + sum extra videos on Lennart Green, Shim Lin and etc. But I wonder, why didn't magicians community create a more natural and smooth way of doing double lift through almost 150 year history of card magic? :D Flipping cards sideways is not how people usually show top card :))
Well, until they can do actual magic, it’s the only practical way to do it.
Watching videos like this makes me wonder if you have to restart more often because you mess up tricks or because you mess up lines :P
by far messing up the script lol
I think the best part was how well the thirteen cards fit on the green area.
yea I was surprised that my mat was just the right width
Are you allowed to play in Vegas???
Amazing!
Thanks!
But what happens if people bet on neither card 🤔
That's a beautiful routine :D
Thank you!! 😊
'Canada Bill' has a neat "wiki."
Oh god I hate the double lift with the fury of a thousand suns. I wish sleights could be done without it. I just hate it so so so much
Mans a literal wizard
Did this jabroni really just light a benji on fire? I'm calling the FBI.
"You're a wizard, Harry."
love the story and the show.. Canada Bill was more of a gambling addict lol what goes around came around for him
very true
I need to know what deck you're using in this video
Tally Ho Fan Back in Red
Fantastic
incredible!
Bro how do you keep track of every single card like that? I could never. The dice roll was a nice touch but people will probably think you can control that too (unless you actually can o.o) after seeing this beautifully executed routine xD
practice, practice, practice!
daaaaaaaamn how many takes was it.
Are you CB Jones ?
Jesus Christ, GG dude, godlike skills
I couldn't follow the first monte but u could follow the second.
Sir I can't do second deal pls give some tips:(
i need to know how to do this to scam my friends in drinking games
Soooooo nice!
even if the cards are (most likely) marked in this demo you surely have impressive skills
just a standard deck of cards here :)
I justc want to ask and i would undertand if you dont want to tell us but is it just sleight of hands or did you use special cards like stripper deck and also sleight of hands?
all sleight of hand here :)
@@DanielRoyMagic Thanks and really impressive
Just pick your card after the dealer put his cards down
Wait, what happens if you bet on a card that is neither a winning or losing card
The bet just stays on the layout and can be moved or left in place before the next round, added this to the description
what if you bet on a card that is neither the losing or winning card?
take a look at the description :)
i got it right both times its in the hand then he picks up the cards the ace and the queen its kinda obvious he changed them out as well why throw them
Canada Bill suffered Karmas revenge!
Dealer: "So Canada, what you been up to today?"
Canada Bill: "You know, just swindling idiots out of their money. Same ol' same ol'"
Dealer: "I can't possibly imagine ever doing something so immoral and being so proud of it. Anyway, you betting this round?"
I love you so much
I want to like th video but there ara 66 comentaries and my linked would be de 666... I'm scared, what I should do?
Don't know how you do it !
Tldr : gambling is bad 😂😂😂
Take my money if you can cheat me so smoothly!
