A BRIEF HISTORY OF TRIUMPH:
Although commonly (and appropriately) credited to Dai Vernon, the magical phenomenon of face up and face down cards turning face down was already an established plot. A commonly cited starting point is Theodore DeLand's Inverto in 1914. In 1932, a slop shuffle variation of triumph created by Ralph W. Hull was published in Eye-Openers. The type of shuffle used in Vernon's variation was first incorporated by Laurie Ireland in 1935. Furthermore, the idea of having every card turn face down except for a selection (or multiple selections) was used by Martin Gardener in 1940. So, what's so special about Dai Vernon's incarnation of Triumph? According to trusted personal sources who are far more knowledgable about magic history than I am, the idea that order would "triumph" over chaos began with Vernon. It is this central theme, sometimes expressed explicitly, but always present implicitly, that to my mind makes Triumph the single greatest card trick in the history of magic. Even though there are other tricks I personally like just as much, if I could only do one card plot for the rest of my life, it would unquestionably be Triumph.
CREDITS:
- Levels 1 and 2 are based on phases from Henry Christ's Fabulous Ace Routine, published in Professional Card Magic in 1961.
- Levels 3 through 6 comprise Dai Vernon's Twisting the Aces Routine, published in More Inner Secrets of Card Magic in 1960. The final phase incorporates a Darwin Ortiz idea that he calls Twisting the Case. It is briefly discussed in Designing Miracles in 2006.
- Level 7 makes use of ideas from Martin Nash, Jason England, and, of course, Dai Vernon. Triumph, in its modern incarnation, was published in 1946 in Stars of Magic. I first encountered the classical triumph effect performed with the four aces by Ricky Jay, though I imagine others had similar ideas.
- Level 8 is an amalgamation of John Bannon's Play it Straight (Triumph), published in 1990 in Impossibilia and Darwin Ortiz's Fast Company, published in Lessons in Card Master in 2012.
- Levels 9 and 10 are a combination of Denis Behr's routine Messy - The Director's Shuffle, published in Handcrafted Card Magic Vol. 2 in 2011 and Darwin Ortiz's routine 52 Pick Up, published in Lessons in Card Mastery in 2012. dang man thats a good one. Dai Vernon would be proud of your accomplishments im certain. Thanks for the time and effort you put into these videos maybe one day ill have some magic worthy of being recognized by the greatest. Currently im working through expert card technique and my feeble mind is not able to understand the moves at first glance although i am getting better at it. prolly hasnt helped that ive only read 5 books in my entire life lol. i really like movies. it takes a vast amount of knowledge to create even a simple variation of any magic. That being said the best way to create a magical moment is to learn as much magic as humanly possible and to be patient with yourself in learning and in practice. anyways killer moves man until recently i always wondered where i could learn stuff like that so thanks again.

I know that “knowing the trick” can ruin the magic for some, but I’m honestly genuinely curious how you manage to pull this off.
To me, the mystery isn’t usually the most impressive thing about magic, it’s the skill that goes into the trick that really gets me impressed. Very cool.
I have no idea how the later tricks were done but the first few were just cleverly flipping over cards right in front of the viewer plus some deck order
yeah, the shuffles and cuts are all _very_ precise. basically, every card's movement is planned ahead of time. his bit about "even with all my practice, I need two shuffles" is because the routine actually needs two shuffles. the first (faro) "shuffle" interleaves every other card. the second one results in some other known/desired outcome (the index of each card in the deck roughly doubles, mod 52 -- which is what the first shuffle did too).
it just blows my mind how seamlessly he does it and how effortless he makes it look.
as stated in the other comments, there is likely some sleight of hand thrown in as needed, but I don't know enough to know whether that was needed for the higher level tricks.
I can't tell you how he controls all the cards in the deck since I'm a total amateur, but something that's quite easy to spot if you're looking for it is when he flips some of the cards when he "cuts" the deck

Normally I can understand how you do most of the sleights in your videos, this time I couldn't understand a thing. This truly is an amazing routine and I must learn at least some of this, I'd like other people to experience what I just experienced.

Great Job! If you watch very very closely, you can see his assistant come into the room and switch the card decks on his desk. Happens every time from Level-4, about middle of each level. I had to play the video multiple times before I caught it. It's a fraction of a second. Try slowing down the video to 1/50 normal speed then it is easy to see.

At first I thought it was cool how you essentially tied in a bunch of tricks together. I knew most but then the last 2 or 3 levels I genuinely smiled because I had no idea how it was done. Started the video with a trip down memory lane and ended absolutely amazed. 10/10 great routine!

Between figuring out the premise of level 10 early and seeing throughout 2 videos that your go-to suit order is clubs, hearts, diamonds, spades; I'm proud to say it only took me about 30-45 seconds on pause to figure out the order of every single card in the deck before they were revealed
I'm not usually a smart person either, I only caught the suit order thing by accident in the first 10 levels video when I noticed that it kept popping up. Those simple things like knowing which order you put your suits in and noticing that there were 9 cards on top of the four of clubs dumbed it down for my brain; and for the first time on this channel, I saw right through the trick before it even unfolded
It really gets me thinking, sometimes it's not a smart person thing to see through tricks like these. The smaller, more unassuming things that I observed casually were the key. Sometimes even things that I might not have noticed had I been actually focused on figuring out the trick rather than mainly watching because I like how you engage with your audience

The only thing I think I see is the handturn in Level 9 for half the pack during the cuts but that's only because I was staring at your hands due to your other videos. I absolutely missed everything else but it was awesome to watch. (I never slow the videos down as I find that to kill the wonder)

My favorite triumph routine is Daniel Garcia's "Nacho Mama's Triumph" it is a simple handling of the effect but ends with changing the backs of the entire deck. It's specifically designed to catch out magicians.

Honestly, I find level 0 to be the most puzzling. I have no idea what's going on here and that's after watching it frame by frame (and unfortunately for me there is no hint/credit in the description). Simply AMAZING!
