The whole band is playing so tight here… Nick’s drumming keeps it all together… everyone is so technically precise… and Marty’s solo blows my mind. It’s so clean and clear almost like the studio version. Ripping song!
As a drummer I can tell you Nick Menza is working overtime on this one. It may not sound like it but there is great technique and timing here. Holy Wars is my favourite Megadeth song but the technique of Nick puts this very high on the list.
His grandad/father (either one. Not sure) played in buddy rich's band. I think Menza even got a lesson or two from buddy. Read it in an article way back
No nicks dad played the 🎷 and played with the likes of buddy rich and when nick was young he would of mingled with all of the greats including buddy rich
im a drummer too. the first part is a little tricky with getting right timing but every other part is easy. it is really hard keeping time the entire song though, i get what you mean. for the end solo, you just start off kind of like you are playing take no prisoners and then just go crazy
People are gonna disagree, but personally, this is, and will always be, the greatest megadeth song ever. Just like metallicas orion, and slayers hell awaits, it just cant get any better to me. The fucking best right here, and countdown isnt even my favorite megadeth album (RIP is, and yes its also my favorite, and if i could somehow fit ashes into that album, it would be 10000% perfect)
I think it is a great example of how great megadeth is. It is really hard to say what is the "best" megadeth song. But if I were to play some songs for new friends this would be one of the first five.
There are tons of megadeth songs that can be better than Ashes in your mouth..Ofc this is one of my favourites..but some of the songs that are better than this are Tornado of souls,My Last Words,Set the World Afire (My personal Favourite)..Ofc its jst my opinion..so no disrespect :)
It's quintessential Megadeth, I give you that. I never think of songs in terms of "best" songs. It just depends on my mood. I have a few favorites though : ashes, holy wars, angry again & tornado.
Glad im not alone in this, actually I just can't get over of how they don't pick this over holy wars to close their sets. The structure of the song is just perfect, and the drum solo at the end lets any drummer in megadeth, even if they are set in "Robot mode" to go wild for that last bit of the show to say goodbye to the fans for the night with a nice punch to the face.
The whole song kicks ass but that guitar harmony at 3:34 gives me goosebumps every time. So glad I got to see them on the Countdown tour with STP at Palmer Auditorium in Davenport, Iowa.
Saw the same tour in Battle Creek MI. So good. I think I have always had a deep seated resentment for STP since then because all my friends and even the local news claimed that STP blew Megadeth away with their show.... Of course that was horse shit. Great concert, great lineup, RIP Menza man... By far my favorite drummer.
This is the most underrated song in Metal.. This and Tornado of souls are the greatest songs from Megadeth.. Marty's solos are just out of this world..
He was mad as hell when they recorded 'So Far So Good so what' and the result is an amazing group of tracks on that album. Pissed off and drugged up Dave made for an excellent combination.
I know! This song is one of the key Megadeth tunes, in my book. I also really like how it strikes just the right balance between being a sort of light-hearted and catchy tune (in all aspects) with being heavy and "ugly" (the syncopated riffs and all the passing tones - signature Megadeth stuff)
MAN! This lineup was tight! Menza, an absolute machine! That solo from Marty over those changes is so perfect. The energy of this performance stands at the absolute top!
#MegadethFuckRules
@@andrewhopko7130 I agree, this is Megadeth for me. And together with Judas Priest they're the best metal band ever. Sepultura in their prime come after, in my view.

Why didn't they make more riffs with odd time patterns. That riff is one of the most brutal riffs they've ever put out, and they prove they can play more than just 4/4 on all of their songs. They're absolutely my favorite band within any genre of metal, but after having listened a lot to the new album from Haken, I became bit disappointed that the big names in metal almost completely forego using any odd time signatures for their songs. It's like my mind has been rewired, and now I can't see things like I did before
Probably my fav Megadeth song. I saw them last week in Windsor and was hoping they'd play this song, but no such luck. Timmo was filling in damn well for Kiko, man he can play. Megadeth always has killers on lead duty.
I think it would take just as long for me to learn to play this on the drums as it did for Dave to grow his flowing hair that long. Jesus… Absolute favorite off of this album, I can thank my old boss for that. Always blared the best music in the greenhouse 🤘🏻🍻🤘🏻
Tremenda pieza, magistral ejecución cuando estaban en lo máximo de su carrera con el gran Marty Friedman en la guitarra y el hoy ya fallecido Nick menza (Q.E.P.D). Que buena época.
This song proves how great Mustaine's musical mind is. This song combines some of the best riffing in existence.
goddamn right!
Yeah, I so Love this song!!!
he is the best rhythm guitarist ever.
Yep. He never got enough credit I find.
yep, amazing
The most underrated song in the entire Megadeth discography.
and Nick... you were such an incredible drummer. RIP.
Super well rated! Every Megadeth fan seems to like it a lot.
Rest in peace Nick Menza. This is crazy.

The best Megadeth lineup ever!
Where is this recorded
+Christoffer Grahm Hammersmith.
This lineup is the only Megadeth for me. New lead guitarist doesn't have near the harmony that Marty has.
You guys obviously haven't heard of Chris poland
@@Bitch6667-q1w Or they have and they prefer this lineup still. Just a thought

This comment nailed it. Band is insanely tight with this one.
i love the guitar solo of this song more than tornado's solo....epic dynamic duo
Yeah this solo is underrated but idk Bout that.
total agree!
Both are good but this JEM is a tad better. For me this solo kicks some serious ass.
Yeah I agree...
It's definitely a highlight of Countdown. I like the Captive Honor solo too, even if it's kinda light

Menza live performance sounds like studio record, he's that damn precise and accurate.
It sounds better. It includes adrenaline and intense feelings of playing for big crowds.
To me he sounds better than studio
nothing beats a megadeth's solo ^_^
True
Yes... Another Megadeth solo
Architecture has the best solo on the album
Smoke on the water main riff???
Nevemore, Testament & Death solos, though. And Necrophagist, dear lawd!
Holy fuck, with a drum solo at the end. Can't believe Menza is no longer with us.
One of the last "technical songs" the Rust in Peace era line-up wrote and it's a beauty! Megadeth at their best!
Well said

This song stomps anything Metallica did on their black album. Or since. RIP Nick Menza. Loved meeting you in ‘97. Class act.
They're not even comparable in the first place
Comparing is depressing, small mind
Both albums are great. Stop trying to compare
this is not only one of the best megadeth songs ever, this is perhaps the best thrash song of the 90s

Arguably the greatest performances of one of their greatest songs.
