Seeing Noriko's development brings tears to my eyes every time. Whenever I find my own self-confidence wavering, I rewatch this series. Noriko Takaya aimed for the top and bullseyed her way into becoming the all-powerful Queen of the Badasses.
I know, right? Norkio: More Metal than you or I will be in our entire lifetimes, in spite of initially being a small, weepy daddy's girl Japanese schoolgirl who is charmingly inept. She has the heart of a lion.
Or rather, Simon. Kamina had his limits. Simon really doesn't have limits. Kamina is more like Smith. Emotionally important, seemingly more competent, dies early/midway.
4:02 'There it is!The Gunbuster' Hearing those words and seeing the Gunbuster appear on the screen is really something as it just shows both how tough the Gunbuster is and also hearing the sound of surprise in the radar man's voice was incredible especially seeing the reaction of the rest of the bridge crew when they all saw the Gunbuster and Noriko were alright as this episode showed Noriko going from a sniveling crybaby to a War Hero showing her growing up and developing a spine in the midst of battle to save her friends was awesome.
The ending of this episode was my favorite part not only seeing Noriko growing up and developing a spine and growing from a pathetic sniveling crybaby into a warrior willing to sacrifice herself to save her friends but also hearing the series full theme song now that was a great ending.
Aside from the song 'Active Heart' which is this anime's theme song the other songs played in this episode first is what could be called 'The Gunbuster March' which we heard at the end of episode 2 when Noriko and Kasumi came aboard the Exelion and the song that is played when Noriko allows the Alien Monster flagship to ram the Gunbuster the first time we hear that song was when Noriko saw Kasumi training by running up stairs with wooden blocks or something strapped to her feet and the last time was at the end of episode 6 when Noriko,Kasumi and the Gunbuster went into the Black Hole Bomb code named 'Buster Machine 3' to activate it with one of Gunbuster's own degeneracy generators that sat in it's chest.
The grandfather of EVNAGELION, DIEBUSTER, TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN and so many more......bow down to the the one series that make standing with the arms crossed the most BADASS pose in anime.
I remember this version this is the vhs version of Gunbuster I know because there are different lines said with the characters then what was said in the dvd version but in spite of all that both versions were awesome and still are.
I remember how earlier in the episode where Jung mentioned hearing about a new weapon being built on the Exelion but she probably had no idea it was a gigantic Mecha that was so large.
Aside from the captain and Ohta and maybe the first officer I don't know if the rest of the Bridge crew knew of the Gunbuster's existence and if they didn't then they must've been in absolute shock at seeing it when it emerged from it's hangar with most or all of them cranining they're necks looking up at it as it came out with probably looks of absolute shock at the sheer size of this Mecha and that it was built onboard they're ship.
I have four things to say: one, sure is really jarring to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion after this, what with Noriko's character growth and all being the complete opposite of Shinji Ikari's. Two, the reveal sequence got so iconic Diebuster (its sequel) and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan (its spiritual successor) did it a bunch more times with clarity, with prime examples being Buster Machine No. 7 and Super Galaxy Gurren Lagaan respectively. Three, love how the sequel, Diebuster, pays homage to 4:15 twice with Nono being the small one (and yet is actually the savior), and Lal'c being the big one (actually the one being saved). Also, one can almost hear "Hoshikuzu Namida" whilst seeing this. Four, hard to think the Gunbuster's dual pilot system not only actually saved Noriko's life during the space monster's ramming attack, but also was an emergency oversight due to its design not being like the RX-7s, as the mass production Sizzler design shows. (The info is actually in the Science Lesson extras for the show, if anyone is curious.)
Just watching that part where they all see the Gunbuster is still intact even though the debris cloud of the monster mothership is almost hard to see through it almost looks like the Gunbuster has it's arms crossed in front of it's chest but it's almost difficult to make out with all that smoke and debris in the way to get a clear look.
You know it's funny that after all this time when I first saw this episode I just realized something the GunBuster just broke the sound barrier when it launched from the Exelion I know this from that cloud like burst seen behind the GunBuster when it launched it created a sonic boom in space man that was a real shocker.
That's an excellent point, and an age-old debate. I agree with you - there is no point to mecha. Those same superweapons that Gunbuster uses could work even better attached to the power grid of a robust or agile spaceship... But you see, mecha is cool. We are anthropoids, and we relate to other anthropoids. Super-mecha (Voltron, Giant Robo, etc) just seem like more plausible and memorable heroes, especially to kids.
When I saw that part where the Gunbuster crossed it's arms and they started crackling with electricity like that I knew that meant Noriko was getting ready to use the Buster Collider units built into the Gunbuster's arms and she most likely knew about them and every other weapon in the Gunbuster's arsenal because Ohta most likely told her about them while he was training her which is most likely how Noriko knew how to use them in this episode and in episode 5 using not just the Buster Beam cannon in the Gunbuster's head and the Buster Collider units in both arms and legs but the Buster Missiles,Homing Lasers and Buster Shield as well and I know it was mentioned in a video on the development of the Sizzler series that the Gunbuster had other weapons not seen in the show like the Buster Missile Might that also has to do with the Gunbuster's arms to that questionable giant baseball bat to the 2 giant axes he carries to a weapon that looked like a shock anchor on the sides of the hip area and the laser weapons both Buster Machines 1 and 2 have when they're not combined and the lasers we saw the Gunbuster firing from different points on his body just before he lifted off from the Exelion again for the last time and used the Buster Shield and let's also not forget those giant tank treads built into his feet with the huge spikes built into them.
When Kasumi Jung and Ohta saw that part where the alien mothership rammed the Gunbuster and they showed the reactions on they're faces I wish they could have extended the scene showing the looks of horror and shock on the faces of the captain and the rest of the bridge crew as well seeing what they're reactions were.
Yeah and the fact at the end of episode 5 he has a door built into the side of his right hand and his internal structural layout is like that of the human body I mean the damn thing has ribs, lungs, what looks like a heart, intestines for crying out loud and most likely a liver, kidneys, pancreas and a stomach now that is just freaky and I also wouldn't be surprised if he has built in elevators and I even saw what looked like a corridor built into his right arm when Noriko and Kazumi exited through that hatch in the side of his right hand now that was just plain weird.
There are three things I love about this battle scene 1) the emotional ride is sting from power drums (Gunax Pose) to Tears to smiles 2) They show Noriko is so smart because she uses the hands of Gunbhster to guide the monster’s attack to pierce the empty Co-pilot area turning her gunbuster’s weakness into a trap to kill the monster 3) After tanking damage, Gunbuster looks more detailed with damage so it looks like it is weirdly prettier after the fight then before
If Gigachad ever made it to become a mech this is how he would look. Basicaly he accepted Noriko into the cocpit but still was himself going in full chad mode and even after the explosion remained chad mode. Basicaly "You pierced my body? Yea see if i care"
You know what would have been neat to see was a special feature video on the d.v.d. on the Gunbuster and it's weapons and capabilities like that special feature video on the Sizzler series that was shown on the 3rd d.v.d of the series seeing everything on the Gunbuster and it's weapons and the capabilities of the Buster Machines that made up the Gunbuster's structure and form now that would have been nice to see.
One thing I would like to have seen is how the heck Noriko got into the Gunbuster's control pod I mean I know how she most likely got inside the Gunbuster through the hatch built into the side of his right hand but it sure would have been nice to see how she got into the control pod.
You know I'm surprised that when the Gunbuster sat in it's hangar it wasn't knocked around during all the attacks from the Alien monsters unless it was so massive it didn't even move an inch or it was being held in place by holding clamps that were attached to the body to keep it from getting jostled around in there who knows since the only time we got to see it in it's hangar was at the end of episode 3 when Noriko came in and saw Ohta in the observation booth while the Gunbuster was being built and what's also funny is that it looks like the chamber where the girls saw the remains of that giant alien creature near the end of episode 2 just when they got caught in a restricted area and Noriko and Kazumi got chewed out by Ohta.
3:51 'Probably Melted and Evaporated' those were some strange words for the first officer to say I mean I'll never understand how a nearly 250 meter tall robot could melt and evaporate that just doesn't make any sense at all.
Those monsters are able to live amongst the heat of the sun, be the size of mountains, travel at light speed and shoot energy beams that obliterate shielded high tech space destroyers, I wouldn't put it past them that one of their leaders could explode and release so much energy that it obliterates everything, plus the higher ups might not have been 100% familiar with how tough Gunbuster is, so they were likely using things like their ships and RXs as a frame of reference.
That's true, all you have said makes sense, but you must keep in mind that there is also a strategic/military factor: A single heavily armored unit have also vulnerabilities. For example. Actual flying fortress and bomber planes needs the protection of lesser planes (with lighter weapons) but higher maneuravility. A single heavily-armored Exelion fighting the whole alien invasion would be an easy target to gank/ambush by the enemie forces
I wasn't really talking about the lack of color, more about the final fight scene being done in stills instead of actual animation. I heard that it was because Gainax was on a tight budget similar to how Evangelion ended up. But I have no idea if it was true.
I just like how everybody else is like "what the fuck? She took Gunbuster without permission?!" and the Coach is like "Here's what you gotta hit" without an additional word. He was *expecting* her to get in the fucking robot without being told to. A Gunbuster pilot must rely on her own judgement to know what to do.
Well, Studio TRIGGER is mainly comprised of former Gainax members. And the guy that made KLK worked on this, as well as most of Gainax’s big hits. NGE, TTGL, P&Sw/G, FLCL, Diebuster, etc
The one thing I still can't get over with the Gunbuster series was the final battle episode where we saw Noriko,Kazumi and Jung doing things like brushing they're hair to doing they're fingernails I mean the future of humanity was at stake and those 3 were making themselves look pretty like they were going to a rock concert or going to a movie premiere I mean that was just weird.
There's also a legitimate point about maneuverability. Gunbuster, while gargantuan by giant robot size, is still significantly smaller than the Exelion. Even if you put those systems on the Exelion, it's still a rather stationary target. Gunbuster's smaller mass allows for less inertia and therefore greater maneuverability, giving some validity for it's own existence. As for the humanoid form...I can't legitimize it, but damn if it's not cool. XD
I know Im eleven years late (damn Time Dilation), but the humanoid form could be for better pilot interface and reference, if its that fast as it appears in its response, It could practically react and respond to any attack.
I remember these science specials with Noriko and Kazumi and it showed on the one from this episode and episode 2 it showed the size comparisons of humans, the humanoid robot trainers, the space monsters and the GunBuster and with said robot it showed the GunBuster stood at nearly 250 meters high with it standing next to what looked like Tokyo Tower with the tips of Gunbuster's shoulders just barely being about the same height as the observation deck.

The first four episodes have their moments, but I feel the story really grows into something truly special in episodes 5+6.
The ending of this episode was my favorite part not only seeing Noriko growing up and developing a spine and growing from a pathetic sniveling crybaby into a warrior willing to sacrifice herself to save her friends but also hearing the series full theme song now that was a great ending.

I know Im eleven years late (damn Time Dilation), but the humanoid form could be for better pilot interface and reference, if its that fast as it appears in its response, It could practically react and respond to any attack.
@@ayar2 We might not live in the same time, but we can still be autistic together, beyond the river of time.
