The 10 Gayest Cities In America

  • What percentage of the American population do you think is gay?
Now when experts ASKED Americans what percentage of Americans are gay, the results were perplexing. The latest poll indicates that we think many many many more of us are gay than actually are gay. Americans estimate that 30% of women are gay and 17% of men are gay.
That’s really high. The actual estimated gay population in America is 4.1%, which is up from 3.5% just 8 years ago.
    10. Miami, Florida 4.2% gay
Now, let’s compare Miami to our least gay large metro in America, Birmingham Alabama, which has an estimated 2.6% of adults who identify as LGBT. That’s only a 1.6% difference, which might be a little surprising.
Of course, if you’re going to measure the city with the actual largest gay population, it would be New York City, which has an estimated 272,000 gay residents. But as a percentage of the city’s population, New York City ranks 17th overall.
    9. Denver, Colorado 4.6 % gay
In 2016, 63% of youth were comfortable interacting with the gay population. A year later, that number was 53% and now, it’s less than half. The only age group that has a growing acceptance of the gay community are the elderly.
    8. Los Angeles, California 4.6% gay
There’s entire websites devoted to the gay lifestyle in LA. Of course, west LA, Hollywood, Brentwood and the surrounding communities are very much gay friendly places. California is one of the main destinations for the gay community in the US.
However, according to polls, a city’s gay-friendly climate isn’t necessarily the main draw for gays. Only 12% of LGBT adults took into consideration how gay friendly a city is when deciding to move there.
7 Salt Lake City, Utah 4.7% gay
Salt Lake City, Utah has two gay city councilors, a lesbian mayor and a pride festival that hosts more than 40,000 participants every year. And Salt Lake also has an LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, too.
    6. Boston, Massachusetts 4.8% gay
If you look at a map, Massachusetts has a high gay population, like several other areas in the New England area. Maine, Vermont and New York all have high gay populations, too. Connecticut, however, remains very traditional. Interesting.
    5. Seattle, Washington, 5% gay
Seattle Washington is unsurprisingly one of the gayest cities in the nation. Here, the gay population is 5% and also growing. Seattle passed San Francisco for the most households composed of gay or lesbian couples at 2.6% - and is the only U.S. city with more than 1% of households being lesbian couples.
    4. New Orleans, Louisiana 5.1% gay
New Orleans is home to Halloween New Orleans, a three-day festival that’s a major draw for the LGBT community. This is home to the Gay Easter Parade and, of course, Mardi Gras, the over-the-top parade that’s a must-see no matter your sexual orientation.
    3. Austin, Texas 5.4% gay
So many gay Americans are moving here that there’s a website called Gay in Austin which features things to do, meetups and advice on where to live.
Austin also boasts the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival as well as a gay and lesbian chamber of commerce
    2. Portland, Oregon 5.5% gay
Portland elected its first gay mayor in 2008. An out bisexual Portlander is Oregon’s governor; an out Portland lesbian is the state’s Speaker of the House. Rainbow flags fly everywhere.
    1. San Francisco, California 6.2% gay
It’s probably no surprise that San Francisco ranks as the gayest city in America. Here, 6.2% of residents are gay, and about 1.5% of the total population is in same-sex marriages. San Francisco is a non-discrimination haven. Equality and fairness rule the day here.

The real percentage is around 10% most likely. I have seen a lot of gay people deep in the closet and their closet adventures make it seem like there are fewer gay people than there actually is. If you count those openly gay AND those who are still not open about it, it comes to around 10%. Then bisexuals can skew the statistics a bit too. It's easier to lead a straight life if you can find sexual attraction in the opposite sex even if you also find a sexual attraction to those of the same sex.

I'd like to know exactly where these statistics came from, what questions exactly were asked and what the answer choices were, how the sampling was done, etc. Lists like this are fun, but usually the science is dubious and tends to confirm the bias of whatever group paid for it. From the gay male side of the question, back when I was better looking, my own experience seemed to indicate that the Kinsey percentages of gays and bisexuals were exceeded in reality - which would indicate that, unless there has been a drastic change over the past several decades, the statistics quoted in this video must be based on some very narrow definitions and some very dubious methodology.

I know that you are only including large cities, over a certain population, however, among small towns, my state takes the cake! If you Wikipedia Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.... there’s an entire paragraph about how gay it is. It’s pretty damn laid back and super fun too. I grew up going there with my family and I still visit there every year. I am straight, but the gay community there keeps everything so nice and the vibes are always so chill and positive. It’s really a nice beach and I know that people don’t normally think of Delaware when someone mentions going to the beach, however Delaware has 14 miles of beautiful, clean beaches and 7 miles of it is an undeveloped & natural protected state park area and the rest is dotted with cute little quaint beach towns with nice boardwalks and shops, restaurants and attractions. It’s super nice. And JUST north of Ocean City, MD (which kinda sucks!).

I’m pretty sure the study he’s using is one on out/open gay people. If he use studies that include those who have sex with the same sex but don’t identify as gay, as well as bisexuals, this video would be drastically different, and I would argue far more accurate.

You got that a bit wrong when it comes to the beginning of San Francisco’s lgbt community. It’s started in the 1800’s during the gold rush time; when men from all over the country came to California for the gold rush in 1848 which brought over 300,000 men into the state. Many of the men settled in San Francisco in which it became the start of SF being considered the lgbt 🏳️‍🌈 capital.

As far as the overall percentage of gay folks in the population - I'm sticking with the Kinsey figure of 10%. It would make sense that that millennials are identifying at a rate of 8.2%. As the societal climate improves with each successive generation, the numbers should be trending upward until the Kinsey 10% is reached. We'll see.

San Francisco is welcoming to all except for anyone who makes less than 100K a year. I live just an hour North of San Francisco and despite having a progressive point of view, I actually hate San Francisco. I don't know why people are willing to spend so much money to live there when that City sucks so bad. It is impossible to park, traffic sucks although not always, the view of the bay is entirely blocked by Towers upon Towers upon Towers.
San Francisco has some nice venues to visit, but I would never live there even if I could afford it. Oh yeah and if you do find parking, a lot of places require you to park in expensive parking garage at charges you like $25 a night. Not even in San Jose which is an even larger City do they have parking garages that cost so much.
And one other thing I forgot to mention was that the pedestrians in San Francisco completely abused The Pedestrian right-of-way and they are constantly crossing the street when it isn't even their turn to cross and the car's turn to move. It's so fucking messed up
