The 10 DUMBEST CITIES in AMERICA

  • In order to rank the dumbest cities in America, we had to look at which cities have the highest high school dropout rates as well as which cities have low college graduation rates.
This is a pretty good indication of where people live who don't have educational backgrounds.
Additionally, we measured how many libraries are in each city, as a ratio versus number of places to party.

Our goal is to combine recent data, fun videos, and thoughts about local culture into bite-sized snacks of shareable information. We call it bite-sized regional infotainment. We try to paint a picture of what’s happening in a region based on “Friday Night Science” - how’d you argue at a bar. To do that, we gather data from around the web to help determine a wide array of factors about where you live, things like safety, desirability, and culture.

Traditional college is a literal complete waste of money and time.
The pacing is fucking horrible, everything is arguably overpriced, and there's not enough 1-1 tutoring to go around if for everyone if anyone needed it.
Literally, I'm currently learning my Spanish skills to become a translator/interpreter for just $6 a month completely online at my own pace, and based on my own rate, I'm learning more in a single month, than anyone will ever learn in an entire year of college Spanish classes.
See, the fucking problem is traditional classes, is that it is forced to cater to slow learning ppl. Not that there's anything wrong with that, not many ppl are actual literal geniuses like I am.

@randall2020, everything I said is 100% true. I was never for one single moment being figurative or metaphorical in any of my statements. Standardized is QUITE LITERALLY A WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME FOR LITERAL GENIUSES LIKE ME.
THERE IS NOTHING, AND I MEAN NOTHING, THAT A STANDARD COLLEGE CAN OFFER IN A CLASSROOM, THAT I CAN'T INSTEAD ACQUIRE EITHER IN AN ONLINE CLASS, OR LEARN TEACHING MYSELF WITH, AGAIN, ONLINE ARTICLES I CAN READ TO LEARN THE CONTENT. HAVING TO SIT IN A CLASSROOM WITH UNDIVIDED ATTENTION AMONG UP TO 30 OTHER STRANGERS, WHERE THE PROFESSOR MAY OR MAY NOT BE SPEAKING OR TEACHING AT A PACE THAT IS ADEQUATE FOR MY GENIUS LEARNING ABILITY, IS LITERALLY WASTING MY MONEY AND TIME.
LITERALLY WHY SHOULD I PAY UP TO $6000 A YEAR, WHEN I CAN FUCKING LEARN IT FOR LITERALLY NO COST, AT HOME MYSELF?!? ONLY A FOOL WOULD DO THAT!
But I digress. For those who own well worth tutoring, yes, standardized classroom college with small class sizes is a good method.

No but they definitely are interlinked and go hand in hand. Smart people chose to educate themselves be it in schools or by reading books on their spare time. Dumb people have neither the desire nor the will to educate themselves on anything - especially not something they haven't been exposed to. Guess what? An education both makes smarter people more smart and dumb people (albeit to a lesser degree) smarter.

Poverty. Poverty compels and enforces ugly compromises in life, and those compromises get one stuck in raw deals. Those who really rule us have no use for a large middle class -- just people trained to do miserable jobs, heavily in debt, and with no prospects.

Hmm... Social science more generally disagrees with the claim that children's laziness is the main contribution to dropping out... As OP said, broken homes, abuse, lack of institutional connection and support, and toxic stress arising from poverty and unstable conditions most contribute to academic struggles and drop outs. Don't discount the struggles of marginalized communities by calling them lazy or unmotivated- the system is literally designed AGAINST them...

Lets put it this way: There is a shortage of skilled trades in this country. People tend to thumb their noses at these types of professions. They want the corner office 9-5 and pull down a comfortable living. Personally, it would bore me to tears, plus make me fat and sedentary, but I digress. Why rack up a 100K-250K debt for an occupation that may or may not even be there when you graduate? And if it is, the wages are less than justifying the expense? Why not go to a trade school? The military? Learn a skill or skill set that you can take with you anywhere? Or perhaps start your own business in time using the experience and skills that you have accumulated? And pull down sometimes double or even triple what the average 4 year degree will earn? All while owing absolutely nothing to anyone, or very little. There is NOTHING wrong with sweat. There is nothing wrong with getting dirty. It washes off. To quote Morgan Freeman, "Some of the happiest people in the world go home smelling to high Heaven at the end of the day". So, you tell me who is smarter? The person who is in debt up to their butts and unemployed in their chosen "field"? Or the person who was willing to start at the beginning, work hard, show up on time and learn while eventually making more and owing less?

Libraries tell you a lot about a community. Highly educated communities, also known as high income communiites (there is essentially no difference) tend to have excellent, well-funded libraries. Currently, because of COVID, I am in a rural community in Texas. When I arrived, I asked several people where the library was. The answer: "I don't know, I've never been to it." And believe me, it was obvious they hadn't. Not that they had missed anything. It was beyond pathetic. I knew several people in New York that had more books in their home than were in this "library". It was so poorly funded, it didn't even have a xerox machine. Meanwhile, the community had spent millions on a sports stadium that would rival some colleges (a place few of its high school students would ever wind up).

The only good things about Fresno are
      (1) no real winter even if it is at the same latitude as Bartlesville or Nashville
      (2) proximity to Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks
      (3) being within range of a weekend junket to San Francisco or Los Angeles (maybe San Diego or Santa Barbara, even if you are too poor to afford such)
      negatives:
      (1) no well-paying jobs that you could not do elsewhere
      (2) California landlords
      (3) California taxes
      (4) California drivers
      (5) California schools
      (6) Texas summers
      (7) no culture other than prolefeed
      (8) highways built for forty years ago... which one can get away with in a state losing population like Michigan or Ohio, but California is gaining population

Foregoing college for blue collar skills is one of the best things to do nowadays as blue collar skills have a higher employment rate and typically pay better than many positions that require college degree, such as a social worker
There are many people with college degrees that work at low paying jobs such as McDonald's or Starbucks. Many of them land similar employment opportunities that would have had without the college degree such as working in factories or positions or low skilled white collar jobs, such as a secretary.
Unless you choose the right degree that is useful economically, it's actually wise to avoid in the first place as you will be left paying for a degree that didn't pay off to make things worse.

The dumbest cities are a controversial matter, as the reasons why (i.e. tests scores, graduation rates, etc.) will be debated forever. I think a good student supported by a good parent can triumph in any school system with the proper home encouragement and reading habits.

At one time, Places Rated rated Las Vegas badly for culture. Las Vegas had a population of one million, but only eight public libraries. That's like one library for a city of 125 thousand. Wanna bet that Lansing, Kalamazoo, and South Bend have multiple libraries? Maybe it doesn't take much book-learning to deal blackjack, change beds, sweep floors, or change cash for gambling chips.
Las Vegas has a non-professional Nevada Symphony Orchestra. Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and St. Louis are of similar size, even if they have been going through some rough times. They all have excellent symphony orchestras despite those cities having a combined population similar to that of Las Vegas.

College education may not have as high a pay-off as it used to have for the cost... but if people want to know how to live, which means not relying upon TV and video games for entertainment, they need some formal education beyond high school.

    • @paulbrower4265

This said, the North Side of Chicago, a city with its own schizophrenic divide, would seem to be more like Boston than like the South Side.
But even more, bad educational systems waste people. Good K-12 teachers can spot talent if they don't have 40 kids in one classroom. California is really bad at that because the tax system implies underfunded schools.
