I love how this man, is the single most powerful being in the whole Lord of The Rings/Hobbit universe, and doesn't give a single f**k. He just joyfully sings his songs in the forest, completely ignoring any issues of the world. What...a...badass.
If I were powerful enough to LAUGH at the temptation of the One Ring and flip it like a coin, I wouldn’t give a f*ck either. It’s a travesty he was left out of the movies
So powerful, that the only way for the movies to exist is to either pretend he doesn't exist, or maybe the trilogy took place while he was taking a nap.
Remember in Tolkien's world, if a thing is old enough and loved enough, it sometimes takes on a spirit of its own. Whatever Tom is, he is a thing/person with no investment in 'stuff' or 'power'. He'd never have any interest or understanding of the ring. But just like everything in this world, is still subject to ruin and destruction. It doesn't matter what he is, only that he is. He could be content because he's got Golberry (I sure would).
They should have included Tom in the movies as a musical scene. It would have been totally out of character and random in the theme of movies. Just the way Tom is! Which means it would have been perfect.
I don't. Would've been terribly done lmao. We don't need screen adaptions for everything because not everything fits. Tom would've had no place in the movies because they are different from the books. It wouldn't have made sense and been a waste of time and budget. They can only film what is necessary to the plot. If any character deserved entry in the film it's Glorfindel or Cirdan.

That's possible, I personally think a being as old and powerful as Tom wouldn't give the title to Sauron considering all the destruction Melkor did to the world up to the first age of the Years of the Sun, a world that Tom loves. This coupled with the fact that Melkor was the Dark Lord FAR longer than Sauron, and unlike say the Istari or the Elves, he doesn't try to simplify things when speaking to mortals. He could very well be refering to Sauron, but I'm going to stick to my original hypothesis
Quite an old post to respond to :) Well the Valar, and Maiar, are the Ainur who came to the world, the only thing that would be older would be Eru Ilúvatar, and I doubt he would be Tom Bombadil, as it would be expected that the creator of the world would have complete control over it, evidenced by his resurrection of Gandalf, and Tom's power is limited to his shack, which is what gives him such power as he doesn't have to maintain a massive domain.
I love Tolkien so much it's really hard to put into words. It's actually one of the highest services you can pay to humanity to create something so magical and sublime, to feed the world of the imagination you know? What a genius.
this is a nice remedition of the poem if only tom could have fought aginst Sauron wed get more poems! but i understand why he didin't shame though hes the 1 person in the world who has found true peace :)
I feel it was a shame that they did not have him in the movie but they decided that their main story was about Frodo and the ring and their is not a whole lot of ring stuff when they are with Tom so he was cut out.
I guess, except for the fact that Tom is literally immune to the power of the One Ring. Even some of the Elves wanted to leave the ring with him because they knew he wouldn’t be tempted by it. The only thing that kept them from doing so is knowing that Sauron would come for him and the forest eventually, and though he is his own master, he’s not really capable of being Sauron’s master
Oh my off-the-cuff theory as to Who Tom Bombadil is. First, Tolkien hated allegory so Tom is not going to be a perfect echo of anyone. He is neither Adam nor Christ, though he is a man who "is Master" and older than Elves, even utterly unaffected by the Ring of Sauron [and can see Frodo plainly when he wears it]. Tolkien was born in Africa and was even lovingly abducted by an African servant to show his family the pretty boy - utterly scaring his parents of course. So I think he's tapping a little bit of that African spirit and freedom in Tom who has "brown skin". Secondly, Tom's clothes seem to change after the rains as do Goldberry's. They are somehow linked inexorably with Nature. So I believe - still processing it though - that Tom is essentially "Father Earth" [as opposed to "Mother Nature" or Gaea. A personification of the land or primal Earth deity [like in pagan myths]. He is also the Sky, so he becomes Master of Lands and All Above Them. Goldberry is Streams and Water, and all that flows Through the Land and Sky, including rain and light. Thus their "merry dancing" and strange union though so dissimilar. He is all that is Solid and Open, She is all that is Bright and Flowing. They move swiftly with each other as htey serve the Hobbits - whom they appreciate. If I am right, it explains why Tom needs so little from the Hobbits to come a'runnin' to save them: their voice need only touch the ground, and Tom will hear. Alas, they are old and have given up all their former lands to others. This is the last spot on Middle Earth where no man dare live - because of the angry old man Willow and forest. They are perfectly safe, naturally. No one else is. Yet here they can live and sing and be together, and thus they are content.
Because Tolkien was born in South Africa, and an African family servant was so happy with his birth, he even "abducted" him to show him to his family. That servant even named a child after him. Tolkien knew this, of course, when he was older. I'm sure it made him smile a bit - bot the love and the audacity. Tolkiens strongest being im Middle earth - he lives the happy and joyful life everyone wants. He is kind, help people, don´t want to be rich or have control of other people. This character is the answer of the meaning of life
My friend ( a lotr expert) says Tom bombadil is the most powerful thing in middle-earth (excluding the valor) but he doesn't care about anything that goes on.
+Cosmic Facts I somehow think he might be even more powerful than the Valar. He might either be a physical manifestation of Ea ( the universe ) or Eru Illuvatar himself. Which would just be insane.
+Mettaton , No he isn't. He wouldn't be able to defeat Sauron's armies, and people have no reason to think that besides he ring doesn't effect him? So what? He's just so genuine and has no concept of corruption or fear therefore the ring can't do anything to him. He doesn't have any power over it. And the whole disappearing of the ring I believe is just slight of hand. Glorfindel at the council of Elrond says suggests giving the ring to Tom for safekeeping stating "If all else is conquered, Bombadil will fall last, just as he was first" meaning tom would be killed by the armies, he absolutely would. Im not saying he has no power he clearly does. But enough to take on the entirety of Mordor singlehandedly? Don't make me laugh
Tolkien only finished a quarter of his works , he intended to do a story of the two blue wizards and their journey onto the East, and all other shit , so maybe he's gonna do some stories of Tom bombadil there too???? I dunno man
The lord of the rings should have been made into a series Then and only then all the characters and other stuff that wasnt included in the movies could be included Maybe they could do it like game of thrones
Then again theres another theory that he's actually an ancient evil spirit that is even more powerful than Sauron, and that he is confined to the old forest by the Valar. That would explain his power over the barrow-wights and huorns, as well as his water nymph wife Goldberry, since river spirits were thought to lure men to their water graves. And it also explains why the old forest is filled with evil, because if Tom Bombadil were good, he would be able to tame the forest.
