I am always thinking of my UA-cam followers and that is why I do not like to overlook some upholstery tips to share; this time related to car floor carpets. As mentioned in a previous video the best quality carpet for automotive purposes is the one that is thermic molded to the shape of the car floor.
The carpet is placed between two big dies male and female, some heat is applied to soften the hard polyurethane layer on the reverse of the carpet and a big hydraulic press shapes it to the desired design. This method is used in many car carpet factories.
In fact what car upholsterers do is work with automotive trim carpets which are not stretchable. So, they should be trimmed or cut out or off to be molded following the metallic car floor shape. In the video I am using a medium duty american carpet, not really the best because it is risky to work with. Its edge frays very fast. The customer wanted it for his old Ford truck and I comply with it 'whatever the customer asks for'.
The customer wanted the carpet to glued down directly over the heat insulation material (Dynamat). I am used to put a 2 cm thick special under carpet layer. The customer did not want it.
This time it took me to perform and develop on a real car a traditional upholstery method I already showed in previous mock-up videos. The molding process can be done directly on the car floor placing the trim carpet over and marking on the reverse side with a waxed pencil or tailor's chalk.
As a pedagogical way I first made the molds/templates by using some kind of brown butcher's wrapping paper. It will help us a lot to understand the process and it also works out if we are beginners in this craft.
As we can see all the cuts and trims off will be exactly copied on the real automotive carpet. Besides this paper mold method helps us to save material. Regularly, a roll of automotive carpets is 1.80 meters wide and carpets are placed following this direction. The truck floor is 1.90 meters wide, so it should have been placed lengthwise.
I would recommend watching the related videos to understand the process much better.
I hope you enjoy and find the video useful!

Bonjour professeur Bonne journée merci
Amazing work as always and thank you for the lessons.
Would placing a dowel or something tonuse as a register to center the holes in the carpet over the holes in the floor be helpful? I'm not asking cause think I know better. More so I am asking cause I'm sure you jave already thought of that.
Read your article in the HogRing...great stuff!
What you say is right. Regularly bolts and screws are screwed in their positions to easily find and make the holes in the real carpet or paper mold if we want to make it beforehand.

What size needle and thread do you use? And do you use the same size thread in the bobbin case? Thank you
I used a 140=22 needle size. Polyester bonded thread size 138 to protect it against moisture. Same thread up and down. Sometimes I use a thinner thread in the bobbin such as 92 thread size.
@@Cechaflo Thank you kindly Maestro. You are a real master
Wish I seen this 2 months ago before I spent 400 for a prefab carpet that I’m not impressed with
