It's been about 15 years or so since I saw these first few episodes of the New Voyages. They still stand up and may be even better than I remembered them. They are of course, by far better than any corporate "Trek" made in the last 20 or so years.
Stories right out of and up there with TOS, loving production and amazing cameos (behind and in front of the camera). Great to see again!

Not only does this give Sulu the episode that he's always deserved but this is one of the best Star Trek episodes ever made. I love how it manages to capture the energy and wonderful vibe that The Original Series had that was lost in the sequential series. And because of the fact that this was made in modern age makes it all that more incredible.

I 100% agree with you. I grew up with ST:TOS, and this episode had me locked into that energy you're talking about. Written so well, distilled essence of the show I grew up loving. This easily translates through the production values of this fan production, and I'm filled with gratitude toward everyone involved.

This honestly might be George Takei's finest performance. It's impressive that a team of fans were responsible for giving him the platform to tell this story instead of the actual studio that owns it. Once again. Further proof that the fans care more about star trek than paramount ever did.

May I ask a question of you? I don't wish to pry nor cause offense. However, a friend of mine is going to lose is wife in the not too distant future. I, too, have always found the, "I'm sorry for your lose" to be so trite and so, well, frankly unhelpful. So, my question is this: Is there some better phrase? Is there some better way to show empathy without it sounding so artificial?
Again, I don't wish to pry. So if you'd rather not answer, I understand.

    • @jwlundgren

@@SlimThrull actually the best "response" was from an Irish friend who does not mince words, she simply said "that's bloody awful". While I wouldn't recommend that a sincere "I am so sorry" followed by silence and PRESENCE is the most sincere. Leave out the "for your loss". The person knows why you are sorry. Just being physically present and letting the grieving person talk, cry, or just sit in silent companionship are the absolute BEST responses. If you are "hugging" friends, give that person a hug. but beware, that physical contact may also set them off. (as I type this, I am crying). The crying never really goes away 3 years later. It only takes a second and I am right back in the hospital room on the last day again. also not abandoning your friend after a period of time. People had warned me to take any help clearning out, etc right away because people will move on with their lives and forget about you. The problem is one is so paralyzed that by the time one is ready to physically clear out things, no one is around. It is excruciating. I am living in another country without a support group, but I have a job, so I stay. Let the grieving person set the pace. Don't ask, SAY what you will do. "I am coming Monday to take you to lunch", etc. "I am coming over to sit with you". Just be present in the griever's life. Thank you so much for asking.

I had tears and I am still wiping them away as I just viewed the episode. this is what Star Trek is all about, they really caught the vision that it was supposed to have. not all the flash in the pan but a real homage to the original. I wish George would stop being mad at William Shatner. It wasn't his fault and if the roles were reversed I don't think he would have acted any different. It wasn't his fault that George didn't get more airtime. that was the decision of the people in charge. I hazard a guess that Shatner would not have been so petty if the roles were reversed to be honest. George did a great job here but he needs to let it go once and for all.

The character of Sulu was to be featured in the Gamesters of Triskelion, but George Takei's role in The Green Beret Movie with John Wayne did not finish filming on time. It would have been Sulu, instead of Chekov opposite Jane Ross as Tamoon, which when I saw the original episode (as a pre-teen) I thought Jane Ross's portrayal of Tamoon was by a male actor in drag because of her deep voice. It would have been an inside joke if that was the case had George Takei co-starred in that episode.

As I pointed out to the director's son, not long ago, this episode had all the hallmarks of a production directed by Gerd Oswald ... just like the Old Series episode he directed, which also had a Shakespearean ambiance, a sad outcome for the leading lady, and a broken heart by Kirk at the end. I always considered most of the Old Series episodes as hokey; but that one stood out from the rest and showed what the series could have been ... as does yours.

I was lucky enough to talk with Mr Takei in 2013 when he appeared as narrator with the Nashville Symphony. George was in the green room with us for about 45 min after dress rehearsal. He spoke with fondness about his whole experience with Phase II and the rare opportunity to have a character expanding role so far removed from his original work. He appreciated too the chance to work with the “emerging talent” (his words) of Christina Moses, assuring us that we’d know her for more work soon. Right as usual, George. She has 30 IMDB credits today.
