Star Trek: Borg
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 сер 2013
- This episode is from the 1996 Interactive Movie game "Star Trek: Borg".
Written by Hilary Bader, directed by James L. Conway, and featured an original score by Dennis McCarthy.
It is presented in first person like a FPS game, though it was a "decision" game, where you watch the action and make decisions at key points.
You are Cadet Qaylan Furlong, who meets a certain entity "Q" who takes him back in time to the battle of Wolf 359, where his father died.
Furlong is given the chance to change history and save his father's life.

It's almost like a lost episode of TNG... It feels good, as someone who really loves TNG, DS9, and Voyager.
LOL - thought it was a fan made thingy. How the hell did they get DeLancie to help out?!?!? Oh...the video game company paid him, lol. Regardless, lots of fun.
Lol
I totally agree!
@@patmcgroin6916🎉
Agreed, coming from the audiobook which was not very good, the video really makes this feel like a TNG episode. Q never does a bad job ❤
These games may be old, but damn, they are so much better than the current ones. Its actually like watching an episode but you can jump in and be there. Its sad no one makes any of these anymore.
Go visit Universal or Disney theme parks.
This is a game? I thought it was a fan made film.
@@YTEdy It's an FMV game. So the videos are between the gameplay.
I wished I could've played this game. Was too poor to get a computer back then to play it on.
@@Demiglitch no this one you had the video then they give you options there's no stopping
It's a great game
Q, impeccably played by de Lancie, is one of sci-fi's great characters.
R C Nelson Too bad Jonathan Harris, Dr. Zachary Smith from the "Lost in Space" series, is no longer with us. I would have loved to see an exchange of sarcastic witticisms between his character and John de Lancie's Q if only their two universes had met.
"Why? Because I can!" should be and sort of is Q'a entire motto 😆
It's my motto too. :P
R C Nelson I'm
My personal favorite.
I love Q's best line ever in this game: "Why? Because I can!" XD Classic Q!
Sounds just like American reasoning for all the bullshit they pull, lol
@@TheZacdes You spelled Democrat reasoning wrong.

@@Ashkihyena and you spelled politicians/rich people wrong.
@@GattToDaChoppaNo, you still spelled Democrat wrong.
I love Q. He's like a big kid. I love when him when the Q Continuamin makes Q a human and he thinks he's dying, but Q is just getting sleepy.
I absolutely love Q's final line: "oops, I almost forgot" haha
It's amazing to consider all the sets, costumes, models, writing and music that went into this production. Very impressive.
I was searching for Star trek the Next Generation episodes when I found this. What a surprise. It's great fun, and John de Lancie, as Q, is brilliant as ever.
Omg me too!! Love John De Lancie❤️
I don't think they could have found a better actor to play Q
I remember buying this what feels like 100 years ago. It was good
"If they court martial you, you can always say 'the collective made me do it"
LMAO 😂😂😂😂
Genius!
lolz perfect XD
I love how Biraka was the only one capable of frustrating Q.
This is smart, it gives the player realistic-seeming decisions, and it is infeasibly well acted for a 1990's PC computer game.
And yet, when it came out, most computer magazines gave the game bad reviews. One said the game's point and click system was a "pick a path mess" and that De Lancie's performance was the only thing good about it (but not enough to save the game). Another reviewer stated that the game lacked real challenge since Q would revive the player every time he died.
Finally, another reviewer said that the nature and design of the game meant that it was only going to be enjoyed by Star Trek fans and nobody else that might buy the game would find it enjoyable.
@@LuckyBird551 massive Oof
I had a physical copy of this game back in the day. Good times.
Well I'm glad I stumbled across this. I'm a big Q fan and a HUGE Borg fan(I love malevolent villains) and I had no clue this movie/game existed. It was somewhat entertaining. It was like finding a lost episode. Thanks for uploading this.
*BETTER than a lost episode. Better than *most* episodes, in fact.
The game was awesome! :)

Temporal Investigations okay Kailen what happened Kailen: well sir Q showed up and... Temporal Investigations never mind
Couldn't be any worse than what Captain Janeway did according to Captain Braxton.
not really 'urgh it was Q.... again.'
Not really. The timeline was undamaged, no concerns about paradoxes. Just welcome the Righteous back and be done with it.
@@thomasmyatt4378 LOL
John must have had a lot of fun making this. Thanks for putting it together.
You know he had to have. I would have
“Why? Because I can!” *laughter*
I feel like this is both Q as a character about the tropical scene he has just created and John de Lancie about making this thing
I played this game long ago. Always wondered how it would be as a 'stand alone'. Glad someone did this. Thanks.
Wait where would you play it at?
@@marteutime Probably back in the days on Windows 98 PC?
I played this on my power mac when it first came out! I remember being frustrated with not being able to get the computer core faster than the captain, but as it turns out, it was meant to be. As a child I found the game challenging and as an adult I really appreciate Q’s acting. Thanks for the video!
I played knowing the sequence up front and still got reprimanded.
One of the few games a Mac can handle 😂
I love how it connects directly into First Contact.
The number of views show just how loved this series was, you're a legend for uploading all the content together
Its nice to know that 300 years into the future that starfleet are still using office chairs from officeworks
When I first saw this I wondered why an omniscient and all-powerful being like Q will even bother with helping a no-name cadet save his father. But then, I realized... Since Q is omniscient, I will not be surprised if he is in fact aware that he is in a science fiction story. And that the cadet isn't just some no-name red shirt, but instead, a player character! And therefore, just as worthy of his attention as a protagonists on the TV shows were.
Also personal amusement is something not to discount.
i just watched a video and its true, q does know he is in a game and makes jokes about it
Mind Blown
Oh man.... that's deep..... Hey anybody want that last slice of pizza?
I always theorized that Q and the Continuum were not actually omnipotent, but rather just an extremely advanced race with technology so subtle, it passes for magic. After all, Q lost his powers once. Would that even be possible, given the definition of omnipotence? What if instead, he just had his gadgets taken away?
Mr. De Lancie doesn't have the problem that many of the other ST iconic actors have occasionally exhibited. He drops "spot on" into his character effortlessly. I thought many characters took time to get their groove back in the TOS movie run. II and VI were closest to the original tenor. I don't think the TNG cast has as big a set of shoes to fill in that regard. This was very enjoyable. Thanks for posting it.
Like RDJ or Goldblum, he plays himself....
@piotrd.4850 If he does, it isn't acting.
I'll add that however long the actors took, the screenwriters took even longer. Arguably, "never", in some instances.
This game would benefit becoming VR.
Jaxvidstar definitely
I think all first person perspective video games took much inspiration and became virtual reality.
Kinda reminds me of the office
q is aware that he is in a game, and makes sometimes jokes about it....for instance he explains how to use a mouse

You could have been the mother of an infinitely powerful being!
You got to love Q. I do.
you could have had your crew back to earth in moments if you took him up on his offer. you could have also saved not only Nelix and Tuvok, but Tuvix as well. you should be in a labor camp in Australia.
Its crazy Q's character stood out so much even directly against Picard. Amazing work!
This is by and far the best of the fan ficion, but wow John de Lancie ..... huge. I have such a huge admiration and cruch on this actor. John can sing, and is a super magician as well so I just wish the writer would of thrown those talents in somehow. For all those who put such love, effort, and talent into all fan dirven projects, Thank you! From an extreme fan, thank you so much! Please keep putting projects out there for us. We really do appreciate it.
absolutely love how this game is just a POV interactive episode - i only wish more adaptations into games would work like this now
One of delancies best performances, even better than some of his tv appearances
it makes me happy that the kid saved his fathers life in the end, thank you Q
It was always obvious that Q did the Federation a huge favor by alerting them to the approaching Borg. Jean-Luc owes somebody a big thank you and a kiss on the cheek.
The funny thing is that in Enterprise they had a run in with Borg. Thanks to the events of ST First Contract. The Borg sent a message about Earth and that message would take 300 years to reach the Borg.
Makes you miss TNG, DS9 a LOT!!
But not voyager because the sets costumes and props came from there. Which makes no sense since wolf 359 happened long before those uniforms were used. I guess no one on set brought it up.
Anarchist86ed, valid point.
Anarchist86ed lol yeah, guess they looked so similar to the ones used on the other two series, no one stopped to think "hey, somethings different about those collar pieces!" while everyone else is just "what do you mean? it's whats they used in Voyager, pretty sure they were used in the other series as well" *shrugs shoulder's* no one's going to notice anyways" *continues on with production knowing they can make a quick buck*.
Anarchist86ed Probably to save money. By 1996, the TNG uniforms were gone and they keep the costuming under budget. It's easier to use VOY uniforms than to remake TNG ones.
No love for VOY? Most of this set was VOY.
They really should’ve made more of these. We got Klingon and Borg, should’ve had a Romulan and Cardassian game as well in the same vein.
That was really good. Thank you for posting that. I lost my dad when I was 10. I'd be lying if I told you I didn't have a tear in my eye. And that was 40 years ago.
From someone who was only 6 years old when the first Star trek first came out on Aussie tv and fell in love with it straight away, I thought this was very clever ,very Q ,and very bloody brilliant ! Well done cadet . ps ( can't help it ) Live long and prosper.
For anyone that's confused about the battle the Righteous goes into at the end and why they just charge in, it's the Battle of Sector 001 from Star Trek: First Contact.
What happened after this?
@@harambememorialpage Highly recommend watching the First Contact movie. It's my personally favorite Star Trek film of all time. I don't want to spoil anything, you should just watch it :)
@@harambememorialpage I know this is an old comment but i thought i'd give you an update on what happens to the Righteous
it survives the battle from First Contact and after being caught up on what they missed over the ten years they are back on active duty with the player Character promoted to Ensign and assigned to the ship in question.
at least thats the conclusion that happens with the ship in the Audiobook adaption, outside of that, there's been no mention of it in games/books/series.
I mean the battle of Sector 001 at the beginning of FC is kinda like a mickey mouse battle compared to Wolf 359.
Probably not nearly as bad. At least thanks to the Enterprise. And sure they did lots more stuff, but nobody else did.

What a blast from the past. Q laughing at 13:50 is all I remember from this game.
I had & still have the interactive game. It doesn't play on todays computers but I do remember how frustrating it was at times, you have to make the correct decision to continue the game or if you didn't, Q would taunt & laugh at you then make you start the game from the beginning.
Great to see the full film in it's original condition, as I did finish the game in the end and it brought back memories of some frustratingly great nights. Thanks for taking the time to down load it. "Was it really 18 years ago, Wow how time fly's".
just curious...how is it that it "doesn't play on today's computers" ? Was it DOS architecture er, something? Like... on a floppy?
loveultraviolet Nah, should've been win95/98 era already. At least for Europe's timeline =)
Iirc, was some 5 CDs or something like that.
Then again, I might be confusing that with Baldur's Gate 1, though even there I could've sworn it was 7 CD too lol.
yeah, didn;t think TNG's run dates were that ancient. Hello, I was using XP up until a few yrs ago (but that was by preference). Funny, I thought DOS still ran under Windows just bcuz there's a command prompt in Programs! *Thanks cnet article fer clearing that up.
it does on a vm
It's frustrating when you play it, but when you're just watching a playthrough, Q's snarks are hilarious. John deLancie just enjoys the heck out of this character. It's fantastic to watch.
One of the cool things I liked about this game: a first-person view of being in a transport beaming.

Better than Barkley’s on ST:TNG
The entire length of this I kept asking myself why the hell don't I remember this??! I watched the entire series from start to finish growing up, (and on netflix)...then I read the description. ahhh.. makes sense.
You know, I actually like Deanna Troi just fine...but I gotta say, Biraka here is really damn awesome. I actually would have liked watching him as ship's counselor in STTNG more. Deanna could've gotten by just fine in some other role on the ship.
You can see him as the Klingon that tried headbutting Data, Ensign Targus on First Contact as the second engineering officer to get Borgified, and Lieutenant Furlong as a random parent in a season 3 episode of TNG.
It's not the actress's fault. She played the role as written. Blame the script writers for forgetting her.
@@Jeroscope He was also in Star Trek: Klingon as one of your Klingon buddies.
I have the feeling that biraka was also the first officer at the rank of full commander.
Q, one of the coolest characters ever conceived!
I played this game over and over to see if I could get different outcomes. It was fun then. This really brings back memories
I had this game, along with Star Trek Klingon with Gowron as the lead. Both were excellent stories and shame no more were made.
Thank Paramount for that.
John Cothran Jr. as Commander Biraka is awesome to watch. Not to mention it's a counselor as first officer, which I think was a Trek first... but his energetic, hopeful personality was a fantastic counter to Q's jaded cynicism.
They had unbelievably great chemistry. Heisenberg would be very jealous.
I liked how they used Q. showed the real Trekkies. :-)
What do ya know....Q has a heart!
Temporal agent Daniels would wholeheartedly disagree....the temporal prime directive states traveling back in time to satisfy ones personal desires like loseing someone you care about is prohibited. Also Q must be an temporal agents worst nightmare lol
Q and Kirk must have their own separate subdivisions within Temporal Investigations.
Well I mean, Q could just snap the temporal agents out of existence if he wanted to…

41:06 is just too hilarious, in a dark humor kinda way.
Okay, this is kind of weird. I'm a bit drunk admittedly, but twenty-five minutes into my first time watching this video of an endearingly cobbled together interactive game, I already give more of a damn about these characters than anyone in the hyper-edited too-quick-to-realise-plot-and-characterisation-is-balderdash Rise of Skywalker. It is a bizarrely engaging thing.
A unique episode, where the main character is the cameraman… but seems silent throughout.
I like this episode… a what if scenario, similar to Back to the Future.
Wow this is really cool for the first time in life I feel like an officer if starfleet... this is the best way to experience Star Trek... Thank you thank you to the people who made this. I am almost crying with joy... finally I experience a starfleet mission myself how it could be... it almost feels like it is real when filmed out of this perspective...
Ooh, the feels right at the end. One of the best Star Trek games :)
Q's face at 13:52 had me laughing uncontrollably!! So funny, you have to pause it there to see his face!!
Ok that's a great meme if your online and being a dickhead. Say Twitter, you're makin fun of someone, they ask why you do it. Post this clip of Q going "Because I can." and laughing.
Watch this countless times. Got the audio book and listened for umpteen time...it’s priceless!
I remember the audio book. Touching ending.
I love this crew! It really helps characterize Starfleet to see the how different crews have their own quirks and interpersonal dynamics!
Q has a heart after all who would think it was interesting.
Q has a heart. its humans that dont understand Q, but he tries to get down to our level of thinking the best he can. remember, Q has a soft spot for humans.
I'd pay real money for all of ST to be put out on Blu or DVD remastered with a Q commentary for all of it.
didnt the actor kill himself?
AlmightyMan01 which one? Q de lancie is still hanging around last I knew... That would suck if he did.
IMDB says no, unless you meant someone else.
Nope. John Delancie still does alot of comedy work. I watched a new segment of his on Just for Laughs the other day. Twas pretty good.
John De Lancie is definitely still alive, although he's said he has next to no interest in reprising his role as Q as he doesn't feel he would have anything more to add that he hasn't already done.

The idea of a BORG with free-will is an interesting and cool concept. Reminds me of Hugh.
I actually played through this game when it came out. I loved it, especially the parts with Q. I have to agree with some other comments, playing it was like actually being in a Star Trek episode. Thanks for putting this together, I really enjoyed seeing it one more time.

According to an eBay listing, there is also a Japan only unreleased DVD version of the "game"...
"Star Trek: Borg was released in 1996 by Simon & Schuster as a computer game for PC and Mac. In Japan it was supposed to be released by DataHouse Beagle as first ever interactive DVD movie in 2000, but was put on indefinite hold. It has 4:3 aspect ratio and 640x480 video, much better quality than computer release of the game. The language is switchable between English and Japanese."

JDL is just an amazing actor.
Q is such a great character, he was on 3 different tv shows..!
I cannot think of another example of an actor who ever had that particular honor, think about it, right?
+quadrogong1111 Well, Unfortunately I can. And it is multiple characters. "Green Acres", "Petticoat Junction" and "Beverly Hillbillies" all shared several ancillary characters.
"Detective Munch" , originally on "Homicide:Life on the Streets" was also a regular on Law and Order:SVU, and made appearances on the "X Files", and the original L&O as well
David Hewlett played the same character on at least two of the Stargate shows. I'm not sure if he ever showed up in Universe or not.
As Krysta mentioned above, Richard Belzer's "John Munch" character (made famous from Law & Order: SVU) appeared in NINE separate series across five different networks.
In fact, he's pretty much the entire linchpin to the "Tommy Westphall universe" theory, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Westphall#The_Tommy_Westphall_Universe_Hypothesis
I'm like 90% sure he has the record for fictional character with the most unique series appearances.
No. He was taken over by a Gou'ld and killed in SG-1 by Tealc on the prometheus. Can't remember which season but it's prior to both Atlantis and Universe.
The Definitive "Q" Episode - well written and cast
Aahh, John de Lancie, having fun, and therefore I am too.
This makes me want some kind of VR Star Trek movie, how ever given what they've done to Star Trek in the last few years its probably better that we don't get one...
This was interesting. I forgot interactive movies ever existed.
I had no idea this existed. Thank you for uploading it. This has been one of the best things I've seen in 2016.
I remember when I first played this, I chose the bag and the game ended right away! 🤣
Never get tired of the part where you can basically knee Q in the groin which unfortunately didn’t happen here.
God I love Q! And this story is actually really kinda touching, cause think about it, Why did Q do this at all? Go to all this trouble just to help this boy save his father and his father's ship? Its not the kinda of think Q would normally do, except he said it it the beginning, Q is partly responsible for Wolf 39, because he is the one who introduced Picard to the Borg. And while its true Q did that so that humanity would be aware of the Borg's existence in time to do something about it, thus ultimately saving us, it still caused the incident where so many died. And I think Q did feel partly guilty about that. And while he couldn't just swoop in and save everyone, corrupting the timeline, he could still do this, and save Someone. He chose to help this boy as a small act of recompense, and Its pretty awesome.
I also really loved the scene where they are talking about whether Q wants to be liked, because I think it was spot on. Q dose want to be liked, but I dont think he quite Knows how to really make friends. Its sad really, Q is so misunderstood.
Plus tricksters are just awesome.
I think you make some good points. It's almost like at first, he's classic Q; he's going to be his smarmy self and teach this cadet a lesson: "You want revenge, huh? Ok then, let me show you how great that will be! NOT!" And when the cadet screws it up and dies, Q doesn't want the fun to be over, so he just keeps letting him re-do it. Also, maybe deep down, he does want him to succeed, because he does feel guilty about Wolf 359.
So finally, the cadet does achieve success, and everything is roses. Whoops, except that little thing about messing up the time-line. This is where the point the counselor made comes in. He's right, Q really does want to be liked, and that burns him. Something an omnipotent being can't do by snapping his fingers?? So how does he do something to change himself? He does something good, something kind, for everyone on the ship, and gives them all another chance (except Sprint, which would have made a bizarre paradox). How can they not like Q after that?
Like in Next Gen when and android learns to laugh.... if only for a few seconds......
no all q wants is to be entertained by these primitive lifeforms [think of our multiverse as the q equivalent of a holodeck]
I think Q got into this to create an experienced crew that can fight the Borg with some new unexpected tactics. Maybe the Righteous saved Earth 10 years into the future and it was because of Q's little game here.
Why did he do it? becuse he was board and it was a tuesday? what other reason would a "Q" Need? he had fun and the kid did better than he expected and tht intrigued him and put him in a quandry at the end and with a new cube making an appearance why not let this ship from the past go fight it? they may end up getting destroyed or they may destroy the cube with what they now know, either way it will be ENTERTAINING! which is what Q wants. so....Game ON!

John de Lancie was in an episode of Barnaby Jones.
It's 2022 and I've just found this.
Where have I been for the last 9 years?
It looks like they mostly filmed on Voyager sets. Also, this game came out in 96, so it wasn't long after VOY Flashback was filmed - an episode which re-created Excelsior sets from STVI.
So the bridge of the USS Righteous seen here is the Excelsior bridge from Flashback, except that the computer displays have been changed to LCARS, as opposed to the ST4/5/6 displays.
Memory Alpha confirms this.
This is great and awesome like all STAR TREK videogames.
I remember seeing the advert for this in a PC gaming mag back in the day and how to buy it (wasn't available in Australia). I ordered & paid for it over the phone. Never arrived unfortunately :( Company was obviously a scam. Never been so devastated. It was right after First Contact came out & I thought it was going to be the greatest game ever.
THIS IS TRUELLY ONE OF THE BEST STAR TREK EPISODES EVER EVER EVER.
Wesley Curry I think so too 🖖🏼
WoW. As others have said, this could be its own episode.
This is a great game. I played it a long time ago and it felt like I was in an episode of TNG.
I like Q. I always did. Even in the first Star Trek Next Gen episode. . A pain in the %#%#'s who generally made you look at something and do the right thing while being annoyingly entertaining to do it. I never understood Picard about that one. Here you have an amateur archeologist who is out exploring the universe [Picard] and you have a guy who has the power and is willing to give you a tour of the universe in any point in history - he could have brought him back to the heyday of the dyson sphere they found once, [scotty episode], or even back when the Slaver empire was around in force as an outside observer, but Picard always shunned the guy, yet claimed to be wanting to "explore strange new worlds". Star Trek: Borg was a great example of Q having a bit of a soft spot, here he gives Furlong a chance to save the old man [sort of puttering around the edges of the rules of being a Q I'm sure] ....and be his typical self in the process. Great ending to a great story that would have made a great book.I'd be looking for the epilogue though, when they finally get home.
notasloud r Exactly!! I still think of that kind of thing when I watch the reruns on BBC (MY DVDs won't work--they give my messages of a faulty disc or whatever). Q has so much to offer--only Picard's gf "Cash?" sees that! I just don't get it. When the Borg were on the Enterprise's ass, I'd have been negotiating with Q like crazy! And same for Janeway...ask Q to get your crew home! They only live once, their parents and friends are dying of old age, and kids are growing up without parents. But I guess the writers and producers had the series mapped out and had no storylines to get around the ability to ask Q for help--hence the anger and faux resentment.
I'd just have made Q a very elusive creature that they always wanted to ask for help, and yelled for him, then nothing, no response, story goes on and they have to save themselves. People would get used to the idea he would not answer very often, not expect a reference every week, and when he did show, they could have him appear from across the universe, busy creating a wormhole, or trying to close a black hole, all kinds of omniscent being stuff...maybe bring a baby dinosaur with him...he could be preoccuppied naming a new universe, or designing a solar system, or destroying some that did not work or were in the way.... They were way too earthy in how they had him show up sometimes. Like a writer forgot this is the UNIVERSE! Q IS OMNISCENT!
+notasloud r I think Capt.Picard realized that Q would have just kept trolling him no matter what happened. Besides that fact, if we take the phrase "Explore strange new worlds" at face value, yes that might potentially include worlds long lost to the sands of time, they would thus be 'new' to Starfleet in a sense. But Picard was both an archaeologist and an explorer, he prized the wisdom of the old along with the beauty and excitement of the new. This is the Captain who had the only Klingon AND android Starfleet officers in existence in his crew at the same time, for substantial periods.
Also, if Q had been a regular character, that would in essence make every episode boil down to "why doesn't Q just (fill in the blank)" to solve any and every problem, which inevitably he would, which would undercut the fact that the characters grew and changed throughout the episodes.
notasloud r Picard knows there is no such thing as a "free lunch", furthermore there is no gratification in easy answers. Working hard for something is its own reward.
Q has to be one of those characters you love to hate.
I played it a long time ago, 1997 and I loved it. Very well done. Today I play on a PS5 2024 and I still think about this game.
Dammit, I love this game! John deLancie really sells it!
borg did the 1st fist bump!! lol
Just found this now. I had no idea with the movie with the new cast they did this spin off game incorporating elements from the movie. I see how they reused sets and models to create a spinoff story with the Borg. A nice, relatively cheaper way to create a new game leveraging items from the movie. Thanks for working out all the bugs, recording all the options, and presenting it as a movie with John DeLancy. More entertaining than I expected by far.
Thanks for uploading this, it brings back a lot of memories. I got this game for Christmas my freshman year of college. I remember I could never get past the part where they were in the Borg cube no matter what I did.
🤣same here! Computer, game, or whatever could never handle when you had to make the inputs in the borg console.
Special thanks to Dennis McCarthy for the score - very well done- fully supportive of mood and action without being intrusive. The set making is outstanding, though perhaps a little to spacious. It's too bad that the game decision points are so obvious- they disrupt the flow of the from an otherwise superb adaptation.
