  • Removing covers, fuel tank, and fairings to get at the critical bits in order to assess the state of the engine.
Before I can even think about starting the engine, I need to make sure the oil pump, cooling system and other important systems are functional. Once I've looked inside the cylinders, then I'll be able to determine if I can turn over the engine by hand. Once I do that, then it should be safe to turn over the engine with the starter motor and verify the oil pump is working.
Engine compression can then be checked and at that time I'll rebuild the carbs. Only when that's all done will be in a position to try and start the bike.
Since I have no idea of the state of this machine, I'll be taking baby steps so that I don't do any major damage to the internal engine parts.

This is going to be a great project seeing the depths you went to with the XV1000,

At 20:09 that fuse box should attach to the plastic bit behind it in a manner similar too the relays, my bike also had the rubber "holder" missing. Fortunately the same piece is used on a few Yamahas, from FZR250s and YZF750's, I had to buy a complete YZF600 Thundercat loom just to get the rubber fuse box holder doodad. 😫🤣🤣

Definitely! It only makes sense to "re-use" components in high volume manufacturing. The fuel pump looked awfully familiar and when I checked the part numbers, it's the same fuel pump that's in my Virago.

Many parts of this bike are generic Yamaha parts, the headlights fit many models, the engine cases are FZ 750, the clutch plates are still used today on some of the MT series bikes, and the rear disc and caliper was used on loads of models through the 90s (125 different models according to part numbers), the tail light lens was used on 263 models 😆from TZR's, XT's FZ's, RZ's, TRX's. But according to Ebay sellers, they are "Very rare and hard to find" 😂

Hi Ken, in a future video could you show how your single seat hump fits on the seat, i found one on Ebay but i think it must be missing some bits, as it doesn't fit very securely at all.

I’ll do that. This seat cover of mine is sloppy also. There seems to be only 4 points of true contact and two of those require clips of some sort. Feel free to email me and I’ll be home in a week. I can send you some pics.

Are you sure that cockpit fairing isn't original? Ive never seen a reproduction one with the bolts for the headlight to attach fitted. Maybe it was just patched with glass fibre.

After closer inspection, it appears to be just that - an original that has been damaged and repaired more than once. Both repair jobs are hideous. I found a bunch of fairing parts in Florida and had them shipped up and will be using those.
