I started shaving my face with a straight razor at 14 as my dad was a barber from the old country so he taught me all he knew about shaving. I have a 4 o'clock shadow by noon and it isn't unusual for me to shave twice a day. When I started shaving my head, a straight razor was tough so I turned to disposables which was costly over time. I now have an extensive collection of safety razors and have been using them for about 20 years. I experiment with different blade and razor combinations, soaps, oils, creams, brushes and after shave splashes and balms. It's sort of became a grooming hobby for me now. Kinda makes it fun and interesting. Hope you enjoy it as well. Shine on!

    • @butch755
      @butch755 8 місяців тому +1

Yep! Shave my head in 2 passes, one across and one against the grain. Watching some of the online videos has inspired me to go back to straight razor face shaving and having a great time with it. Picked up a Feather changeable blade Japanese style razor and having some great results. No need for honing and stropping which works well for me. BBS shaves both face and head are what I strive for unless I'm short on time. Usually 2 passes and a touch up gets me there. I use the sharpest blades that I can find to keep the passes down. Enjoying your videos. Honest and to the point. Not obnoxious like some can be. Keep up the great work!

@@butch755 I've been shaving my head daily with the grain and against for two years now. I love it super close, but my problem now is I have compounded scars from nicks, cuts, and scrapes. Just a suggestion, when I cut my skin shaving, I avoid the spot or don't shave for 3 days until the wound closes. An alum block treatment after each shave speeds up healing as every pass of your razor is exfoliating skin and has to grow back. Cold water shaving instead of hot makes it easier to shave off hairs. Hot water rinse and then cold water final wash closes pours. After final rinse and dry I apply witch hazel and allow it to dry on my skin as it allows the pours to do their job. I wait for about 10 minuets after that before I apply any after shave splash, balms or creams. If I'm just staying home, I'll apply 100% aloe as an after shave lotion. Been wet shaving for about 50 years and have tried a lot of things and this seems to be what works for me. Your welcome to give any or all of them a try and keep what you will and disregard the rest. the most important thing is to remember to have a good time.

DE razors are definitely worth for a try to see if you can get on with them. Economically sustainable, cheap as chips, and above all close as hell in the right hands. When you're on point with them they beat anything else hands down in terms of closeness. Time spent using a DE is my only issue, so I use a leaf as my daily (beyond amazing!), and a DE at weekends when I have luxury time for the best head shave out there. Be sure to get the right blade for you though (leaf or DE). I use Astra's or feathers. The leaf blades that shipped with it are frankly shat which made for a bad first experience. Sorting the blades out paved the way for the DE for me.

"Feather" makes by far the sharpest blade I've ever used, regardless of what holder is used. To this day, that blade still makes me a little nervous, even going with the grain.

I've been using my Gillette 1912 de for years now. I also use conditioner to shave. I use the dorco301 blades which cost hardly anything. In my experience I've discovered that the secret to a good shave is in the preparation. Nothing fancy but I wash my head then apply the conditioner then shaving is like cutting through butter. I shave about every three days and the hairs absorb more water and conditioner so they're softer and easier to shave. I don't make a big deal over it but takes me about 10 minutes to do the job.

I've tried various DE razors of the years, and by far the best one (for me) has been the Leaf Thorn. It's super easy to use, and it uses half blades. $60 and you're basically set for life. No need for special blades; you just buy normal blades and snap them in half. So with a $10 pack of 100 standard DE blades, you get a minimum of 200 shaves, which you can stretch even further if you're fine with using the same half-blade more than once. At 1-2 shaves per week, that single pack of blades easily lasts over 2 years.
As a matter of fact, I saw your older video where you suggested using conditioner for shaving, and I've been doing the conditioner + Thorn combo ever since. I'm in and out of the bathroom in 10-15 minutes. Give it a try if you're still searching for options!

The thing about a one-bladed razor like a safety razor is instead of having 3, 4, and 5 blades is it's better for your skin because it's not as harsh and you're not as likely to get bumps or razor burn. But it does take a little bit longer to shave. If you like that idea of having only one blade but the feel of a cartridge razor, I recommend trying the Leaf Twig razor! Thanks for your videos Greg you helped me with shaving my head and I'm really good at it now!!!

Bought a pack of 200(!) Astra Superior Platinum blades for 16€, which equals to the price of 4 blades for the old Gilette ProGlive I've been using for my facial hair before. I shave my head twice a week and own quite a few saftey razors...
Hands down without question the best headshaver I've ever used is the Murker Slant razor...(long handle version) goes through days of stubble effortlessly with no irritation or tugging...
Slants slice through hair rather than chop...
Also... they achieve the slant angle by slightly twisting the blade which puts a spring load on the steel.. making it stiffer and less prone to vibration.. which will make a blade bite...
I have a beard to and use a Leaf Thorn on my face great for detail work and uses standard blade you snap in half..
A 10 cent blade good 2 refills!... I will never ever go back to rip off cartridges again.

Great video. Always wanted to try a safety razor but have been hesitant because of the fear of cutting myself. You demonstrated a great technique on the very first shave using a safety razor and it was a complete success. You didn't cut yourself or irritate your skin at all and that is very impressive for a first time user of this type of razor! I'm glad you enjoyed the experience.
The blades are definitely more affordable than cartridge razors because you can get packs of 100 blades for around 10 or 15 dollars. Which is much better than spending nearly 20 dollars for just 4 cartridges of Gillette multiblade razors. Not sure about the longevity of these safety blades like you mentioned in the video, my guess is you should only use them a couple of times then toss them because you can get so many for cheap.
I like that you have two sides on the safety razor so that you can spin the razor around and use the other clean side which means you can rinse both sides off at once and reduce the amount of overall times you have to stop and rinse the entire razor under the faucet. This looks like a good product, especially since you say it got your head very smooth which is something that is very important to a lot of head shavers.

Economically, I buy 100 astra blades on amazon for 9-10 dollars. Last me every bit if 2 years. I also wondered when I first started why I hadn’t tried before. You can shave a week or more of growth off with a DE razor, try that with a cartridge. Finally, I have used a lot of shaving soaps, but the eucalyptus mint from proraso I feel is the best. Makes head slick, smells great, and leaves your head feeling soft and conditioned

I started shaving my head and my face with a DE razor just a few months ago. I got a Henson razor in Medium aggression and I have been a big fan so far. It took me awhile to get used to a DE razor because I had picked up bad habits from using cartridge razors for so long. But after I learned I haven't looked back. I am saving so much money as well. I picked up like 400 Astra green blades from Amazon for just over $40.00. If I were to be trying to buy that amount of Gillette cartridges, it would have cost me literally thousands of dollars. The blades are so cheap, I only use them once, and then I toss them. I don't see me ever going back to cartridges. Great video! I started shaving my head about a year ago and I actually started with the exact same razor you´re using in this video. I hadn´t even shaved my head with a regular razor before so I didn´t have any point of comparison but I liked it a lot. It sure took me about 45 minutes to finish the first time haha, nowadays I do a quick 4 minutes 1 pass clean up everyday which i truly enjoy.
Currently I use the Gillette Heritage which is a really cool razor too but I found out that Van Der Hagen razor to be a really good headshaver because it´s fairly mild and forgiving which is appreciated on the "stretched" skin of the top of the head which can be pretty easy to cut with a more aggresive razor.
Once you´re finished with your blades I would recommend you to pick up a "sampler" which are kind of an asorted bag of different blade brands so you can try out and find which one you like more before buying a 100 count pack, you´ll be impressed about how different the exact same razor can be with each different blade. I found out Astra SP, Wilkinson Sword and Dorco to pair really well with it.
Finally. a quick tip about that blade box. It was a bit difficult to open that way because it wasn´t supposed to open haha. You should only push a bit and "slide" one blade at a time through the little slot you can see in the side. And the "bigger" slot you can see in the back of the box is for you to safely store the used blades.
Thanks for the video! Cheers from Mexico.

Greg Boswell hahaha bro I have the same exact product and had the same exact encounter with the package funny. But I did watch videos before attempting it. What I ran into making me 2nd guess 1st was the shave soap (I use) lather (thicker is better. 2nd is the razor (it's not it it's the included blades). 3rd is the pre shave (shave soap for me has been best with a skin prep of a slight coat of gel or maybe an oil for better lubricity). And for a lather a brush caters to it a ton. The whole experience is based on how pampered and better treated you want your skin to be. The included blades tho suck but once shaving with them they make it more difficult to not get a feel for the right angle. But I researched and found the "Gillette Platinum" blades that are very premium for barely $10 per 100 ct pack on Amazon. The blades are so much sharper and smooth when shaving it made me laugh when paired with a thick lather, that same Van Der Hagen razor, and a shave gel (I use) all paired together. I was like finally that's what the hype is all about and can't wait for my next shaves with the next products for my preferred scents. Anyway I hope this was helpful. Enjoy and have fun!!! It only gets better🤘

I keep a beard and I don't shave my head, but I do shave around my cheeks and neck area to keep the beard looking sharp. I've been using a safety razor for 15 years, compared to those disposable razors, or the razors with replaceable heads, these are so much cheaper. I bought a 100 pack of derby razor blades from amazon a few years ago for $8. and those will last me forever... I just change my blade every 5 shaves or so, not that i really need to do it that often because the area i shave is so small but still.

Try using an electric shaver or a cartridge razor with a skin guard first. I wouldn’t use a DE razor on it for awhile. Your skin has to get used to the contact with the metal. Conditioner will be your best friend. Use that instead of shaving cream.

You will find most guys go 3 shaves on one blade which after doing the math DE shaving (in the beginning) is a whole lot cheaper. That being said, if the DE shaving evolves in to a hobby it can turn expensive real quick. There are hundreds of razors, soaps, balms, aftershaves, brushes, blades out there.hang on and enjoy the experience 🪒💈
