  • What makes for good type, layout and design? How can you art direct a designer when it comes to typography. Are there any examples or tutorials on critiquing typography for something with a lot of type?
With the launch of a new newspaper magazine focused on the business of design, Chris sits down with Art Center graduate Minhye to go over some layouts.

This is so cool. You give the most constructive criticism and feedback, and it's cool that you don't hesitate to suggest exactly what the designer could do differently rather than make them guess what you're thinking. A lot of directors would think that unethical but as a designer it's actually really helpful.

is beyond valuable to a person like me trying to learn the do's and
    dont's of design and typography.
Any reading material you can recommend that would have
a similar approach to critiquing design?
Thank you (and Jose) for always putting out great content.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. Unfortunately typography books that actually teach layout are very rare. I would recommend reading Jan Tschichold rules of typography.

The way you criticize the design as if one can just read how to design from a book. 😀 Nice video

Though it's been said many times before, I can't stress enough how essential the insight this type of video provides. Critiques - by their very nature - can be overwhelming at best, but nothing is worse than leaving an exchange with nothing to take away from it. All too often I find people failing to address what direction to take a project after identifying what doesn't work, creating only a bigger lapse in finding a solution that is better-suited.
With each layout you were able to provide connections that read clear and were well explained, which in turn allowed viewers to follow along and learn with Min in the moment. Thank you to you both, would love to see more of these situations moving forward.

What I learned from this video, got me my first internship and later design job.
In german we would say: It helped me get my "foot in the door" of design.
Chris Do's contructive and straight-to-the-point art direction is something a lot of people could learn from.
    We want more! Thank you.
