Graphic Design Tutorial: Typography Design & Art Direction
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лип 2016
- What makes for good type, layout and design? How can you art direct a designer when it comes to typography. Are there any examples or tutorials on critiquing typography for something with a lot of type?
With the launch of a new newspaper magazine focused on the business of design, Chris sits down with Art Center graduate Minhye to go over some layouts.

Typography course is now on sale. Save $20 when you order ahead of the product launch. academy.thefutur.com/p/typography-01
That looked more like Design 101 than art direction.
Please do just a typography workshop!!!

"This typeface looks like Bodoni to me, but very condensed."
Font is literally Bodoni MT Condensed. Color me impressed.
This was awesome Chris! I don't feel like many people are sharing content like this. So much more valuable than just explaining theories and showing designs. Please post more of this for different facets of your company!
Will do Alex. Maybe a client call? Now that would be some drama.
The Skool Network don't tease us now! That would be so eye-opening and useful if you could manage to pull that off though! The "mock client" scenarios you and Jose Caballer do are phenomenal on their own, a real call would be incredible!
+Alex Bass we can figure out something without betraying our client.
+The Skool Network that would be great! You guys are the best!
totally agree
Dude. I learned more in this video than I did in a whole semester of design class. Please, keep making content like this.
Will do.
This is so cool. You give the most constructive criticism and feedback, and it's cool that you don't hesitate to suggest exactly what the designer could do differently rather than make them guess what you're thinking. A lot of directors would think that unethical but as a designer it's actually really helpful.
"laser" cries.
Who is interested in attending a typography class taught by Chris Do?
I'm in ! Looking forward to that :)
+Avish John maybe in the fall
Id love to come to but I live in London. Lol
+Laith Wallace should we stream this somehow?
Totally!
wow. i'm blown away by how many layouts the designer created. maybe i've grown lazy, but this seems like a crazy amount of work! well done. great critique as well.
Its not a big deal, these designers get like a whole week or few days to work on it.
I didn't know I could do an internship on UA-cam. That's a pretty cool video.
Why not? that's why we are producing these videos.
The Futur and that's pretty good. I just watched a few video and I feel like learning more than at uni or even some of my internship. Keep doing this guys!
Kawane31 thank you.
@Kawane31 Exactly!
Great advice and really sharp sense of how to improve the work she laid out. I like his professionalism and tact in handling how he delivered constructive criticism. Your knowledge of expertise really shined through here. The world is yours friend! Peace
Ivan Zavala thanks Ivan.
Chris! The world needs more content like this!
ok. we'll make more.
Fernanda Flores I agree!!
Fernanda Flores totally agree

Wow - thank you this is fantastic

This is a great video. The designer has serious guts to have her work critiqued on video.
This is a fantastic video for fledgling designers to use to both gain insight from you and to develop their willingness to be critiqued. Overcoming ego is a tremendous stop toward success in any career
Such constructive feedback! It is indeed a quality example of how important the way of communicating your ideas is. Thank you for sharing!
Love her designs, love your suggestions even more!
Thank you!
What a great initiative, Chris! Thank you and the designer for exposing us to your critic and layout/typography process. I wish we could have more of this. Kudos!
Chris, it really helped me as a self-taught designer and as a beginner. this content shows further and deeper understanding about typography. This is really what I need. I am now starting to layout my magazine for our project in school. Gonna promote this on my social media account. I really love this
This girl is talented!
This is really great. I've had many great teachers for different skills. What I saw in this video, and others I've been watching from your channel, shows the clarity and neutral standpoint that allows one to be clear and express themselves in a pure form. It's an efficient way to elevate those around you. I hope your employee's see it in a similar way. It can be rough sometimes, ha.
This is your first video that I am seeing and I'm completely amazed by these critiques that you're giving! There is so much to learn and I'm happy I discovered this. I've never really had a proper guidance in editorial design, and now I found out where to hone my skills from! Thanks a lot for sharing this!
I just love your videos. They have so much depth and I learn a lot. I'm an Junior Art Director from Germany and started my own channel now to educate young creative talents from Germany to get their spot in the creative industry! You guys are a great inspiration!
This is so helpful seeing how business actually operate & how employers work ith employees. Subbed & looking forward to more content!!!
Thanks for the sub.
I was looking for a motion design resources for my project, accidentally bumped into your channel, and I said this is what I'm looking for, not a resources but someone that can inspire me everyday. I love your style for being BRIEF, PRECISE and CONCISE, since then I can't stop watching/ learning from your channel, as in daily routine...coffee and your channel every morning!! MABUHAY! :)
Thank you.
I will never skip the ad for videos like this. We need more videos like this.
I love these types of videos!! The quick critique is very helpful in “learning how to see” design. Two thumbs up everyone! And really nice designs too!
This is a crazy amount of learning. I wish you put up more of similar break-downs of design elements.
ok. we've recorded more. time to edit.
More art direction videos please. This was very helpful. Thank you, Chris and the futur team!
You are very welcome!
I can't watch this video enough, it will be my favorite , I keep getting back to it, it's rare to find one with the art director sketching and giving notes as professional as Chris
Appreciate it Sajida
This was really awesome, and possibly one of the better "day in the life of" moments, it was super personal, but also professional and a bit casual. As I go back and slowly devour your back catalogue, there are a few that really stick out to me, and this is definitely one. Raw and (mostly) unfiltered.
Alright. I'm convinced. I want to work for you. Expect my resume in a couple months.
Devin.Glad to hear you want to work for us. I'll look out for a killer resume. But wait, did you watch the resume episode?
Chris Sensei, you make me love design again, thank you
Yay!!!
I love this so much. I'm the only designer in my team, fresh outta uni and its so lovely to have a chance to learn from someone in design.
I love this kind of editorial design critiques. I am learning different insights.
As a graphic design student, this tutorial is gold!!
Wish we had this kind of feedback in school.
Great feedback!
Thanks. Keep tuning in. We'll be doing more of these design critiques.
This is very helpful, especially for someone like me who loves editorial layout. Thank you!
You're welcome Aprylle.
I really liked the idea of this type of video. Lots of information and real life samples to go off of. Keep it up guys, love your stuff!
thanks Chris, you are awesome. futur's content is so helpful. I love how you guys always give relevant and detailed stuff.
Great job Chris, I like that kind of video, it shows me your beautiful working climate, I think it is lively, by the way you are so kind and friendly with your worker.that's good!!
i'm mostly friendly w/ some biting sarcasm.
Thanks a lot Chris. More tips like this please, you have such a good design eyes...from my point of view lot of her designs was really great and then you come in with your opinion and I was like, yea he is right but I dont saw that before you said that...
MrCotijebe lol. That's why Aaron calls me Darth Vader. Everything was okay until Vader rolls in.
I just stumbled about your content yesterday and I adore your videos. You can really tell that Chris knows what he's doing and to give us such an idea of you work, design and essentially, think, is awesome. Keep to good stuff up!
Lucsy3012 thank you!
This is so helpful - would love to see more like this for different kinds of projects!
I was just thinking how there is so much business advice coming from you guys - that a technical video would be nice and found this. Very helpful. It's a bit challenging seeing this not knowing what your design perimeters are at Future. Can kind of tell from your previous videos, but still very informative and helpful...
This is extremely valuable information! Taking notes to absorb some of your expertise.
MrRodQ awesome.
it is so nice to see two of you interact to get the best results... you're like a definition of how an art director should communicate with his colleagues ;) thank you for sharing this!
thanks SnookRS.
This was great Chris! As a Hand Lettering student and Typography lover, I truly enjoyed seeing the many ways she explored the text, and watching you get intimate with her work--it shows that you are very knowledgeable in the field, and because of that, your viewers can take a little from your pallet and add it to theirs. Thank you for the quality content.
Kyree Cooper you're welcome. Appreciate the feedback.
Hands down best design channel if you want to learn or improve on this topic.
Thanks Musti. What other channels do you watch for this kind of information?
Wow I loved this. Learned so much. Thank you
Vanessa T thanks Vanessa.
I like how he said overlaying colors would help add depth or bring out the main text in one of her sketch designs, I would have never thought of that, it really helped the final layout on my magazine spread that I'm working on
glad to help!
Wow... Would love to watch this kind of videos every single day! The Chris’ rationales behind everything are so valuable! Thanks!
Thanks
As a reality tv enthusiast (yes there's such a thing) I love to watch shows that shows processes of doing things and I've been looking for shows that are multimedia related (there's one show about Photography called Top Photographer very recently, it's quite decent). You could do a mini series like this and I think you'll get a decent amount of leads since multimedia design has been a popular industry that a lot of young people venture to. I really like this video and I hope you post a lot more "process" or "on the go" kind of videos. Thank you!
we just taped another one. you'll get your wish soon enough. plus there's part 2 of this video.
Loving this content! As a solo freelancer it's hard to get feedback like this, so it's a very useful insight into art direction and how to critique my own work before sending it out. Would love to see more vids along these lines.
Thanks for sharing CB.
Thank you for the insight, I enjoy seeing how you visualize the corrections you need to make.
Awesome stuff! Everything is so spot on and easy to pick up on.
"The Process" using CMYK, a.k.a. process colors! So clever!
I would love to see more design tutorial like this! is good feedback
Lucas Seet can do.
Wow The Futur! Great video. I stumbled upon this amazing content and fell in love with this. Thanks a lot for throwing light on aspects hardly ever discussed. My respects to you!
Videos like this are priceless because you have time to think about your design ideas and then you hear professional advice so you can compare these two ideas and so on. Great video guys, please do more like this!
I will record more next week Dominik. Next one will be about web design.
This is so good.
Thanks Devin.
What is the ugliest font & Pantone color in your opinion? I feel like taking on a design challenge.
Easily Comic Sans with Pantone 448C ! Makes me feel a bit sick just talking about it. I'm sure the magic Chris Do could work some magic with it though :)
+Ted Bettridge thanks Ted. No other takers.
yeah, comic sans is the ugliest typeface, but I'm gonna go the other direction and say serpentine, papyrus, eurostile, and vectorized handlettered fonts
would have to be comic sans, or Papyrus.
+May Refky comic sans challenge accepted. What should we design?
Super helpful way to learn by watching critiques on real projects. Thank you Chris!
As a designer I really loved it so much information and yes i would love to see more videos like this. Thanks for sharing this video.
That was super duper helpful
yay! thanks Ryan.
Wao... that's a really nice video. Everything beautifully explained. Keep making such videos.
Will do.
I learned a lot from this!!! more of this style of video please! I'd also like to see their revised versions too.
The most dynamic, informative and useful graphic design video on YT. Great job!
Wow! Thanks. That's high praise.
Awesome video! Interested in seeing you or Jose give feedback for UX/UI design work as well.
Ok. That's a good suggestion. Let's see what we can do.
That is something I'd be very interested in!
Great idea.
Really great this idea!
like this video so much, thanks for doing it
Ann Huang thanks Ann.
These kinda of video, where you're hands on manipulating and commenting on design are my favorite videos from you (I dig everything else you do and really do appreciate the volume and variety of talk sessions you do). These videos are palpable in their education and it's great seeing a pro in work.
Eliot Nguyen thanks Elliot. You are not alone. I see that we created something that resonates with our audience. And the numbers don't lie.
I know I’m 3 years late, but I’d love to see more of these kinds of videos. It’s nice to see some productive critiques between two people rather than the usual “yeah it looks good”. Keep the videos coming!
We have more in the works.
One of my favorite episodes on the Skool Network.
The rapid fire critique, coupled with the solid reasoning
is beyond valuable to a person like me trying to learn the do's and
dont's of design and typography.
Any reading material you can recommend that would have
a similar approach to critiquing design?
Thank you (and Jose) for always putting out great content.
Thanks for the detailed feedback. Unfortunately typography books that actually teach layout are very rare. I would recommend reading Jan Tschichold rules of typography.
t-y-p-o-g-r-a-p-h-y.org/MEDIA/PDF/ThePrinciplesoftheNewTypography.pdf
7:07 "You haven't shown me any of this layouts? How come?" for some reason I can relate to that girl.
The Design of Business and The Business of Design.
7 years later, this is still a gem 💎 ✨
Instead showing some random tutorial this is totally a great way to learn, tnx chris for this video
The way you criticize the design as if one can just read how to design from a book. 😀 Nice video
Very good help, totally crisp content, Fluid and human. i like it! I am new to this awesome Channel and will help you (Share and get some classes later on)
Georgios Konstantinidis thank you. Appreciate the help.
This is a great video Chris! I would love to see more videos like this for sure. Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to share your wisdom with us.
Happy to Aaron.
Wow I felt like I was back in my typography class from last semester... you give feedback just like my professor did. Straight to the point with detailed explanations. Thanks for your educational videos 👌🏼
thanks. you must have a cool teacher. ;)
This is great!
Thanks!
Can you make this a series so we can follow the whole process. Thanks
yeah. that's the plan.
I love this! The detail that was pointed out. The reasoning behind. The amount of work that is shown & critic- no bull s*^*t straight to the point! thank you Chris & Mini
As a graphic-design university student in England - this is SO helpful! Specific insights into what it would be like to work in a place like this, the expectation of work output etc. Thankyou SO much. Only just found this channel and I am SO happy that I did.
Thanks Joseph for commenting. Really appreciate the support and welcome to the channel!
Is this the jab jab jab right hook strategy? since iam seriously considering buying your paid stuff just because how awesome those freebies are! Thank you so much for this Chris.
Haliel yes it is. We believe in helping others. At some point they want to support us in some way. BlackFriday16 will save you 20% on all kits til Monday at midnight. Help us help you.
This is really awesome! I'm a design young teacher in university and I was wondering how can I improve the learning of my students? And you are an inspiration to me. Can I email you my situation to get advice and authorization? I would like to do videos from my classes like you.
DM on Facebook. Where are you located?
Nice one. Would expect such typography & art direction video’s often. 👏🏼👍🏻
Though it's been said many times before, I can't stress enough how essential the insight this type of video provides. Critiques - by their very nature - can be overwhelming at best, but nothing is worse than leaving an exchange with nothing to take away from it. All too often I find people failing to address what direction to take a project after identifying what doesn't work, creating only a bigger lapse in finding a solution that is better-suited.
With each layout you were able to provide connections that read clear and were well explained, which in turn allowed viewers to follow along and learn with Min in the moment. Thank you to you both, would love to see more of these situations moving forward.
Thanks John. More coming. These are fun for us to do and it seems like people who can appreciate these types of discussions get a lot of value from them.
Moar!!
Love how Chris mentioned everything explicitly! Very helpful!
Thank you.
This is an amazing video! It really helps to see a director give the padawans direction in a way that is direct, understandable, and in a respectful way. This is a great video to show in graphic design classes! I'm dying to see more of these!
Use the Force.
I love it that you explain why something is either good less good. Please share more videos of this type.
keep watching. we have many videos where i dissect work.
LOVED this video. I learned a TON. Critique videos like this are almost like being in design school again but much more focused and practical. Thank you
Thanks Phillip! That's a big compliment.
Please do more content like this! This was very useful :) .. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge with us ..
This video was awesome! I learned so much on how to give my graphic design intern a useful review and help them grow. I would love to see more videos like this.
LOVE these types of videos. Please keep these going! Thanks Chris!
You're welcome Alana.
Thanks alot for this very professional behind the scenes kinda like video.... I think there should be more of this kind. Much love
What I learned from this video, got me my first internship and later design job.
In german we would say: It helped me get my "foot in the door" of design.
Chris Do's contructive and straight-to-the-point art direction is something a lot of people could learn from.
We want more! Thank you.
Congrats! Gut! Gut gemacht! Gute Arbeit!
You guys never cease to amaze me. I learned SO much in a span of 27 minutes. Thank you!
Yay! 27 minutes of value.
I love how quickly you understand what is going on and how it could be improved. I really like this format. Very educative! Would love to see more stuff on typography!
20+ years of practice.
Really great content. It's great seeing the critique process in action (from the safety of youtube). Props to the student stretching her creativity and open to feedback. So valuable.
Min is actually on staff.
I love the process you took her through and how you gave really good feedback on how to improve what you didn't like. Good stuff.
Thanks Christyl.
You're welcome.
Definitely yes ! Great tips , I would really love to see more of it
I could watch this all day! There are so few resources out there for editorial design, I really appreciated this!
you're in luck. we have another that we are editing right now.
