Dehydrating vegetables is my #1 task during October. I am working on carrots first, I use carrots all year. Radishes next. I have small shelves in the kitchen that holds 30 one cup jars, and in October I refill them with dehydrated and powdered vegetables. It takes about 6 pounds of carrots to fill one cup powder. Mushrooms, radishes, cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, wild greens, apple, bananas, turnips, rutabaga, beets, mustard greens, etc. Those 30 cups of powder would bug out with me, hot vegetable bouillon life sustaining drinks. Not everyone backpacks 200 pounds of 30 vegetables out in an emergency, but for me it would be essential. That's my annual October storage task and I will run my dehydrator all month. It keeps my house warm in the light chill, so replaces my heater this month. I bought 2 dehydrators at the thrift store for $12. I add vegetable powder to soup broth, sprinkle over salads, tuck into sandwiches, and sprinkle on stir fry. When my son was little and hated vegetables, I sprinkled vegetables into spaghetti sauce 😊. Now I make the same powders for his wall and my gkids. I mail them in sandwich bags for refills. He finally found out why mom's cooking is richly flavored and tastiest. If you can dehydrate it, it can powder down. I use a small coffee grinder. I also have dehydrated vegetables in my pantry. They have replaced most of my canned and frozen fruits and vegetables. To serve one person, pints and quarts can be wasteful.
I have been a Thrive delivery customer for several years and get just over $100 every month. Excellent quality. As a single woman I can make single meals easy, no waste. I am getting spoiled with that.
I was busy today!! Processed a case of Granny Smiths for the freeze dryer. Picked up 4 bags of russets. Twice bakers on my list for freezer. Emptied freezer found 2 ham hocks and lots of chicken bones small pieces. 15 quarts of broth to can up tomorrow picked two trays of chicken out of broth and seasoned for freeze dryer, replenished the pinto beans and found some odds and end pinks and reds added some bacon ham pieces and sausage along with creole seasoning. 8 quarts creole beans and 16 pints pintos. Okay I'm tired. But it's a good tired.
I just talked to my parents, they’re 86 & 85 and live in northwest Tennessee. They had light rain and a little wind for two days. I was glad to hear that since I live in Alaska. My older brother lives near them so I wasn’t real worried when he didn’t call. I’m making my list of things to get for stocktober.
My daughter became a Thrive consultant and I’m so happy to have all those specials every month!! 😊🎉❤I am loving this collaboration thank you for all the info!!!
I lost NOTHING in my freezer during the storm, but a few things were frosty-mostly- thawed so I processed 2 pig butts today like you did, thick diced, ALL jars sealed! Super pleased. Ugly chicken currently venting! Making split pea soup for eating this week with the bones tomorrow! Work hasn’t started up again so getting many things put up! Thanks for all you teach me!
Thanks Leisa, I found your channel recently. With your guidance, I have been able to quickly and greatly improve the state of preparedness in my household. It's better than it was a couple of weeks ago. I like your style!! Thank you so much for all you do for us!
Wish i had more time to can! Work full time with my own biz and 19 employees. My dad's at home on hospice and my mom doesn't drive! And they live an hour away. On a dead run constantly. I did manage to get about 40 jars up of various things..Thrive sounds great! Going to give it a go!
You are my consultant and I think you are a great consultant! My husband went to Walmart today, said that’s the last time he will go on the 1st! lol…we live in a very small town and everyone was shopping! Thank you Leisa for all you do!
I picked up my Walmart groceries in 15 minutes behind the store this morning, they load it and I stay in my car. I make my pickup order every week. Sometimes I miss impulse shopping, but I stay 100% on budget month after month. I also live in a small town.
Our butcher friends at our local discount store are going to hook me up with a #40 case of boneless, skinless chicken breast for $1.99 a pound. Will be canning it all.
Hi Leisa everyone that appreciates you have amazing words of wisdom and in all the disaster and devastation that has happened you have helped thousands of people prepare and be thankful knowing you have helped, I am not in your country and I'm deeply sorry for all the people that have lost their lives but one thing I can say to you is I have been helped by you to when my husband was working he said to me start preparing for job loss or a situation that is out of our control so we did just that and started putting up food then my husband got sick with non Hodgkins lymphoma and lost his job now we are awaiting results of his scan hoping it's gone after chemotherapy but I to want to say thankyou from the bottom of my heart for all you have shown everyone including me on being prepared and it's helped big time again thank you ❤😊
just saw strike over back to work Friday. one disaster diverted, more still to come but dang what a relief for those who are still pinching pennies to build our pantries
The chaos has already started up here in RI. The vehicle fleet manager at my employer lives in Coventry, RI. He reported all roads around the Super Wal0Mart in Coventry were completely gridlocked. Panic buying was taking place. The first of the month may have played a factor in this since the SNAP distributions came out today. For the next few days, if your food stores and Wal-Mart's seem more chaotic than usual, keep in mind that there are two things going on at once.
We made a simple one-pot dish of pasta, ground sausage, tomatoes & bell peppers (from our garden) & onion (sprinkled cheddar cheese on top YUM!) - then did the math ... $1 per serving! Trying to teach this to the teens & 20-somethings in my family!!!!
Pasta can stretch almost any meat or poultry, and then, yes! .... Add cheese, garlic, onions, peppers, tomatoes, any veggie. Potatoes, rice, and pasta traditionally are stretchers for your animal products, where all the essential fat and protein are. That is why so many ethnic cuisines have recipes with them. Budget stretchers!
Im reading the comments and wondering where all the energy is coming from. I’m still trying to get the end of the garden processed. I’m tired and loosing time fast. I wake up prepping and canning and I’m burned out. I push thru the best I can. I keep looking for recipes that I can use up produce at the same time im loosing veggies to the weather change. MAJOR PROPS AND COODOS to all the commenters.
It's okay!!! Can what you can, and freeze the rest until you have the time and energy to deal with it. Slow and steady. Or else you WILL burn out. Trust me, been there, done that....more than once. ~Hugs~
I find that taking COQ10, also known as Querticin, supplements helps my 68 yr old body kick into gear better, helps me with staying on track mentally, too! 🍀🍀
That was people grabbing tp in fear of the. Strike settled now.😊 Also lots of folks buying water, both to send to the Helene disaster area, & because they just realized they don't have any stocked for themselves.
I'm watching your stacktober information now. I've been canning since the beginning of September. Mostly fruits and vegetables is my husband and my children won't eat canned meat even though I've tried. I absolutely love your channel and you are an amazing teacher.
Great list and I will definitely pass it on to my Facebook group. I am stockpiling can pumpkin puree so I can make pumpkin spice coquito. Hopefully I can make enough to barter and trade with.
Closest farmers market to me is an hour away. No case lot sales anywhere my part of the country. Glory for all that get. I have been stacked to the rafters for years. Greetings from west Texas.
My husband told me his grandmother used to make beans cakes with leftover mashed pinto beans. I wanted some one evening and didn't have canned pinto beans but had a can of refried beans and oh it was so much better.
Thank goodness I’m stocked . If all I eat is rice, beans and instant mashed potatoes with power milk (skim) and hunting deer I’m cool with that . Our freezers are full. I have canned stuff to eat and dry beans and so forth. I bought extra body wash and have plenty of first aid and some gloves and plenty of blankets and towels and have plenty warm clothes and shoes and summer clothes and a generator . This is some kind of crazy stuff.
I'm really looking forward to November and Turkey season. I'm definitely gonna stock up with at least 10 turkeys this year. Get them babies canned up, make broth, bone broth, all the good things. I managed to get a decent amount of jars into my overflow from the sale Azure had, which makes these beautiful things possible in this house. In the meantime, definitely doing the produce stock ups, since it is the season. Holidays are perfect times to get all the baking stuff back in stock, totally agree.
When shopping today at Meijer, I checked out the frozen turkey's just to see prices and if there were any deals.....24 lb turkey, $115 and some change. I re-read it 3 times just to be sure. Oh. My. Heavens!
MBroke down and purchased a second 6 ft tall, 4 ft wide shelving unit. About half of the space will be my arts and crafts (that lost their home when I got to first shelving unit, which is stacked to the ceiling with food), and the other half will be pasta, dried beans and rice, and Thrive Life products! Started last month on a monthly plan.
I made Mexican sopa yesterday and grated one medium carrot in and sauted it with the star pasta. It was a delicious lunch for 1. Cooked in the same couple minutes as little pasta. I buy LaModerna stars and fideo for 50 cents a package. Add a spoon of jalapeño vinegar at serving for yummmm. I top up my pickled jalapeños with fresh vinegar for months.
Cant do too much shopping right now . Finishe up the tomatoes yesterday so today an making spiced pare jam. Did a very small grocery order this week but I am blessed with a pantry. Going tomorrow to get cabbage and maybe a pumpkin for the dehydrator. Much love
You can make a wonderful quiche with it if you have eggs. Those two ingredients plus anything else you want to add. Meats, veggies, green onions, etc...
I do what I can. Usually get $100 plus from Thrive Life each month as a monthly customer. It's great to keep the extra food and not overloading my motorhome with extra weight.
Im absolutely giddy about dehydrating refried beans, it never occurred to me how much I won’t eat them because of waste. Now I can have my bean breakfast tacos anytime with small beans yay 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hey Sweet Lady I LOVE your videos you have thought me so much. Yesterday I did a $500 grocery run because of the strike although I did put up 10 lb ugly chicken and 20 lb of hamburger. 91% of medicine is imported.
Don’t forget that Amazon Prime has their BIG SALE starting October 8th. I’m looking at Life Straws and Hand Crank Emergency Lights. Also long burning candles. GREAT LIST Leisa!
Large jar candles can go over 130 hours. I reuse them for change or other little things. Got some from Ollie's for 5 dollars. Don't think Amazon can go that cheap. Even Walmart may be cheaper. Compare.
Didnt think of grabbing pumpkin and turkey for canning this fall 🤦🏽♀️ Made a list on thrive from your link hopefully can order in a few days. Thanks so much for this vid & your link. They have a ton of sales
Honestly, if I was gonna use freeze dried stuff, I'd buy a freeze dryer and make it myself, put it in mylar bags. I think the freeze dryer would pay for itself 10 times over the course of its lifetime. All my dishes are vegetable and starch based, so that would definitely be the most financially feasible option for me. For now, I opt for the dehydrated veg, which is far less expensive. Augason Farms makes excellent dehydrated produce!
Good morning, LeisaI think I win worst consultant. I joined for the discount and early shopping. I LOVE the broccoli!,, I can fix what I want for just me. Bonus- I don’t always wear my dentures and I can’t still eat it. It’s 99.9% florets! Unlike frozen bagged stuff. I put a case on auto ship. Be safe, Be prepared, Be Blessed
I'm on a necessities only month since I just shelled out $1500 for a new water tank on Monday, and had to get a credit card to pay $4K for the well pump which also failed. Hopefully that card will come today and the well guy will zip over here so I can get my water back! At least the card is interest free for 18 months. I guess I should be thankful both went now because I read that Home Depot will be one of most impacted stores by the port strike and I imagine that food isn't going to be the only thing in shortage. Recently stripped off the wall paper in the downstairs bath and fortunately already got a bunch of sanding pads but I'm going to pick up the paint this week. I was going to do some cooking and dehydrating over the weekend but wasn't able to because of not having water. I also haven't been able to water my garden and have a ton of unripened tomatoes because they came out very late. My food pantry is in decent shape though because I had a gut feeling last week I should restock and I only have a few items on my list to get. The best laid plans can get messed up by the most unexpected things happening! It's said that if the strike goes more than two weeks there will be a serious impact and I have a feeling that's what the workers are aiming for. Thanks for the video, always helpful.
I have been watching your videos, nonstop, for the past week . I have a couple of questions. Can you pressure can bacon? And when do we use canning salt? I got interested in canning about two years ago but haven't done much. I watched a lot of canning videos and they talk about rebel canning. I bought everything they said to buy. I was scared of it all until I recently found your channel. You make it so interesting, and I really want to get started.
Hey , I just needed to ask you, I just saw a video that showed how they use a lid and ring to size up hamburger, then they fry the burger about 3/4 way done, then cover that in a wide mouth jar with beef broth, I Belive they used Lipton onion soup mix for the broth and they did cook chopped up onions in the meat, please let me know what you think., I value your information
You get a boiled crumbly ground beef shaped like a burger. If you like burgers at all, you'll dislike that. I'm not texture sensitive, and that hit me all kinds of wrong.
Ok another random question from me😂 How do y’all feel about canning butter? I live in FL and cool dry places are near impossible at times. I can alot and generally rotate before a year. I know opinions very - I welcome any and all input if you have a moment - thank you ❤
@@SuttonsDaze 😉 Thank you. Till I bring on dairy animals it is just going to have to be a luxury treat 🤷♀️ Thats fine- lard and coconut oil are filling in. 😁

Auguson farms has good their butter powder
The butter powder is on sale is what I was trying to say lol
Is it tastier than Thrive Life's?
@denisewilson8367 i haven't opened mine so I can't say. I seen good reviews. I just mentioned it because it was on sale.
@denisewilson8367 i don't know about "tastier" but it is a well trusted brand and considering it was on sale, it's a good price for the butter powder.
Thanks for the video, always helpful.
if you have a well for water you might want to do the well with a hand pump if power goes out
Stocktober! Huzzah!
You called?
@@isatq2133 we live 5 miles from Huzzah creek in southeast Missouri
I eat the cheese straight from the can!!! Mmmmmmmm!
1. No
2. Canning salt is best for pickling recipes.
3. You can do it
@@SuttonsDaze thank you so much. I love that you respond to comments.
I need a vacuum sealer!! Amazon
I finally was able to place a Costco order after 4 tries. Next up is ordering Thrive Life for ling term storage.
Did she just say walking Petri dishes? 😂😂😂
She did........LOL
You're too funny!! 😂😂@@SuttonsDaze
@@SuttonsDaze I call them walking germs! But I'm going to remember the petri dishes!!
Yup, she did and it’s true. Good thing little ones are just so darn wonderful. 💕

It’s Stocktober and also Crocktober!
Ok another random question from me😂 How do y’all feel about canning butter?
I live in FL and cool dry places are near impossible at times. I can alot and generally rotate before a year. I know opinions very - I welcome any and all input if you have a moment - thank you ❤
Ive got better things to do honestly. There is no safe method for it.
Red Feather canned butter. Pricy but better than none.
@@SuttonsDaze 😉 Thank you. Till I bring on dairy animals it is just going to have to be a luxury treat 🤷♀️ Thats fine- lard and coconut oil are filling in. 😁
