Bucket brush, bracket change and broken roller

  • 3 jobs in this video.
First job is replacing the bristles on a bucket brush. The rotor is removed from the brush, the old bearing is cut off with the grinder and gas torch. Good practice to replace the bearing anyway so no point wasting time trying to remove it without damaging it. Once its out, the old bristles are removed. The rotor is found to be cracked, so that needed a welding repair. After repairing the cracks, new bristles are put on then the brush is put back together.
Second job is to cut off and replace the brackets on an electric pole grab. The old brackets are removed using the airarc gouger and gas torch, once removed and ground flat, the new JCB brackets are welded on, along with the bracket stops. The grab also needed the bar replacing that joins the jaws together as this was bent. New washers were cut out with the cnc plasma to be welded onto the bar. It was then test fitted and then painted.
Final job of the video it to shorted a conveyor roller. The original roller had snapped and the spare wasn’t correct. The customer needed to be back up and running the next day and with me not having the materials in stock to make a new one, the decision was made to shorten the spare. The bars were first cut through with the 9” grinder and removed. The old end plates were then cut off using the gas torch. The shaft was put in the lathe to have the ends machined down to the correct size and a new keyway was milled. 2 new plates were cut out on the cnc plasma table. The end plates were welded back on and also the bars.
    Hope you enjoyed the video.
    Thanks for watching!

How good was that, three jobs all completed satisfactory. The undercutting on the welding of the tractor fixture looked a bit extreme, like a mistake a first year apprentice would make. Still no real harm done. The change from gas to plasma cutting on the new machine is quite impressive, really simple. Great post just right for an easy Sunday morning, thanks and take care 👍

Show ogf you craftsmanship. Let us see your welds before you grind them smooth. Always loov a good bead.

My go to with bearing races is the slit disc on a grinder, 9/10 times I can cut it and drive a chisel in and not mark the shaft, but if I’m burning them off I do it burning straight down, I can usually see what I’m doing better. Another great video 👍🏼

The first job on the vid - those brush bearings, when I was in the mechanicking business back in the day I found the best way to remove inner bearing tracks was to use a slitting disc as you said, but instead of risking damaging the shaft you cut until about an eighth of an inch short from all the way through then give it a good hard smack with a nice sharp one inch cold chisel, and it fractures instantly....at that point it expands enough to slide off with ease.....never failed me in years of doing it that way.......and its heaps quicker.

In the 80's I used to deliver fuel to battery egg farms, looking at that brush reminded me of the god awful smell that came out of those places. Nice to see that there has been absolutely no change since the 80's, when it comes to keeping their equipment serviced and cleaned. That cutting table is certainly earning its wages, definitely looks like it was a brilliant purchase.

Easy way to get centred on a bar for keyways without fancy measuring is to touch down on the shaft with your cutter a few thousands and look at the shape it makes ( looks like a butterfly ) you can move in or out a few thou till the cut pattern looks like the wings are exactly the same when you cut down and then you will be perfectly centred on the bar. As a miller for many years this is a very quick way to cut the keyways without taking out the cutting tool and measuring then working out how much to move and having to replace tool, old school.

3:03 I use a grinder, just don't go all the way through. That race is hard as diamond gnats, so if you mark it, then strike it with a blunt chisel, it will snap. I've done this on big bearings too, where cutting would've meant using a lot of disk. Just a decent slit per size of race and bam, off it falls.
7:00 Smokes, that's so cheaply made! My brother has a very similar one from the 80's. Made in Poland, and that little plate you're pointing at at the time index is 1 cm thick plate, welded all the way around. Whoa, that's cheap. :))
