Absolutely true genius. Leo could not play guitar and was almost deaf yet he build all these classics. And usually the first design was already a perfrct classic. Maybe he was channeling the gods or something ;)

exactly. also this came out a year before the Jag. Scale this baby down, remove the middle pickup and boom, it's another classic. Pretty smart designers back then.

The Fender VI was created to challenge the Dano baritone (tik tak bass). The Dano was used to double upright bass lines in Nashville back in the 50s. Fender wanted to siphon off some of the money Dano was raking in so they came up with the Fender VI.

So here's the thing ... almost everybody thinks that Paul McCartney was the only one playing bass on Penny Lane and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Except he wasn't. The bass parts on both of those songs were played on the Beatle's Fender Six (by a right handed player). Listen to the Official Vevo version of this song at 10 seconds and 1:00 minute in (and other choice places throughout). Here that tremolo bar working? And, on While my guitar Gently Weeps, while it is true that there are TWO bass tracks playing simultaneously in most places throughout the track, there is also a figure being played on the bass six that would is virtually impossible to play on a four string bass. Listen about 3:45 minutes in on the Remastered 2009 version. Here that wide interval played on the very trebbly sounding Bass? I tried forever to play that and could never get it right ... because I don't have a Fender Six. That would have made it easy. So if someone wants to donate that Bass Six to me to practice with ....
And I would be remiss if I did not make laudatory comments about Lemmo's noodle salad with this instrument. Nobody could doubt the uniqueness or versatility of this instrument after he showed us how it can be used by a consummate player such as himself. So interesting!

@@RonMishra You didn't listen closely enough. There are numerous places in the track where the bass notes exhibit tremolo of a kind that I was never able to produce on a Rick. And who's to say it wasn't George playing on HIS own song? The Beatles were famously rumored to have played all kinds of instrumental samples under assumed names in the studio while the bean counters were sleeping. Maybe George called in L'Angelo d'Mysterioso to play that track (and got payed a premium session players rate on top of his usual pay).
