I appreciate you watching and supporting the channel! What kind of cam would you go for? Would you go for a low to mid range cam or get one for top end?
It's hard to find to beat the factory W cam for low to mid. Most Sportster cams rob the low and mid for top end. Hammer's 570 is about the only cam l have found that beats the factory cam everywhere.
Stock cams for reliability. Stage 1 pipes/cleaner/tune. But how about skipping Stage 2 and 3 and adding Stage 4 ported and shaved heads for some more compression and flow?
The big bore XLs (1200) can make good 1/8 to 1/4 mile drag bikes. Good 0 to 60 times to for a pushrod motor. My first Harley was an 04' 1200 Sportster and just with a pair of Bassani pipes, and a Screamin Eagle High Flow Air Cleaner and a Dynojet jet kit it dynoed over 71 hp, and around it was either 77 or 79 ft. pounds of torque. That was with all stock internals. My dad used to work at the local Harley shop, and they did a 1200 carbed Sporty with JE pistons, Zippers cam, and for the exhaust had a Thunderheader got close to 100 hp, and lifted off the front of the ground when got on it in second gear. These bikes put out more hp per cubic inch than the twin cam 88! Riding like I did I noticed that the Sportys sometimes get looked down on by some Big Twin owners, and they arent as comfortable out on the InterState either.
I hear that about the big twin guys. That’s why I’m sticking a turbo on my 04 roadster! “When are you going to upgrade to a big boy bike?” I guess when I’m old😂
If you don't do the math, you are just a follower. I just ran 7.05 on the Sturgis eighth mile last Fri night on Metzeler Karoo adventure touring tires on a 1200 conversion. The local fast guy runs 6.9 on a Busa. I could smoke him with a 591 on the rear. Pump gas, all very mild stuff. There is no practical value to cams in an 883 as the cams are not the restriction. The small ports and valve sizes are the culprit.
One thing to remember, If your going to do any kind of Performance Up-Grade that give your H-D Sportster 883 or 1200 enough Power Gain to where your engine RPM can Rev over 6000 RPM, you'll need to Up Grade the Value Springs for those Higher Revving RPM. Other wises you'll float the Stock Valve Springs, which will and can damage if not destroy the Engine. I have a 1989 H-D Sportster that was a 883, which the last owner converted to a 1200. After I got the bike, I striped, the Fuel Tank, Fenders, Seat, Exhaust Pipes, and the ignition. I replaced all of those parts with the SXS Kit from Phil Little ( the kits give the Sporty that Flat-Track Racer look) My future plan are to install the Hammer 1275 100 HP kit. In-which should be All the Power (and More) than I'll ever need. P.S. I would up-load a photo but You Tube doesn't give us that option, that I know of anyway.
I once bought a '79 XLCH new and I always felt it was a bit shy on performance. This year I bought a used '03 Sportster that had the 1200 cylinders and heads. I didn't know really what I was getting, but wow! I was impressed when it revved up a bit. Where I expected it to flatten off, it really came alive, and every time I crank it up in the rpms I find myself pointing to the tank and saying "Now that's a Sportster, the way a Sportster ought to be." It's enough for me. It just seems to be everything I could expect out of a Sportster. I have no desire for anything more. I don't know what somebody did to it. The bad ignition it had which I needed to replace said "Screaming Eagle" on it, and I believe I have the Screaming Eagle air cleaner. I do wonder if somebody upped the compression, but I really don't know. I suspect somebody cammed up those gears. Anyway, I got what I was hoping for. Not disappointed at all.
How much was the kit? I’m building my 2021 sportster with ohlins suspension already ordered and want a hammer perf kit but debating the 110 or 120 kit and a fueling cam
Just asked my local shop about a stage 2 for my 1200, has a stage one, kinda disappointing to hear that I’m more than likely gonna hear the same thing from my mechanic that I just heard in this video about how it really hard to get more low and mid range power because that’s how I ride wasn’t exactly planning on doing a big bore with a new clutch etc, overall very good and informational video
I did just Stage 1 on my Previous 18 1200 Roadster ,,running Short Shots, SE Ventilator heavy breather with a Race Tuner and Dyno..My numbers Were 79.3 Bhp @ 6.02 rpm and 78.9 lbs @ 4.77 rpm No Cam ,that's app %20 improvement over Stock..Third gear Pull was 106 mph @ 6400 Rpm.
I have a 97 1200 Sportster. I put N4 cams pistons and SE heads on it. Mikuni HRS42 carb Daugherty air box. Rinehart exhaust SE ignition module SE coil S&S roller rocker arms. I weigh about 260 it would scare a small person. I just got a very low mile 07 low rider that's stock except mufflers. It had 3600 miles on it when I got it. I might take up your advice and increase the cubic inches and put a set of cams in it. What a difference in ride from the sporty. When i bought my Sportster I had to pay $100 get on a waiting list to get the first available bike that came in. I wasn't guaranteed the color either. I had to wait 9 months for my bike. The only bikes that were in the dealership were sold ones. No used ones either. For a big twin the wait was longer. This was in 1996. I was 25 years old riding my new Harley Davidson. King lol. I really like your videos buddy. Shinny side up.
Thank you!! Harley-Davidson would love to get back to those days!! Those were some really golden years of Harley-Davidson!! Gotta love a built Sportster, they are truly underrated machines for the power they can lay down.
hammer 1275 kit for a 1990 xlh 4spd stock heads and cam for now...gotta love 80+ tq from 3k-5500 rpm & 80hp in a sub 500lb rigid chopper. will be doing heads
Bought a garbage 1988 883….Bought cams,,swapped…Could do mean power wheelies in 1st 2nd…. The traded jugs and pistons to Harley for 1200cc jugs ,,, Clutch wouldn’t hold, got Barrett extra disk…Put on brand new S&S supE carb. Holy shit! 3rd gear power wheelie and rolling burnouts for 100’ no brake.. Cams were Andrews v4 I think,,,was awhile back….Really fun ride
I converted my old 883 evo rigid mount to 1200 and installed the Andrews N4 cams. Very happy with these cams, would not go back. Big power from 4K rpm to redline. I had head work done too, and a good two into one pipe
Yes I also love the Andrews n4’s cams , I did a set along with a 1275 hammer prefomance big bore kit on my 2016 iron . Man I agree 100% about the n4’s, they are so solid on my bike once they kit in they pull hard rite to the red line ! Now I don’t spin my bike up to 7000-7200 rpms like some of the guys with bigger builds do , but I can tell you that the cams pull nice for me rite to the 6300rpm range about . It’s great because the power is all in great spot , they seem to fit well with my riding style .
Chris Dawson no noticeable difference in vibration on my bike after the 1275 big bore kit . Absolutely nothing to worry about as far as I’m concerned. It’s stil a pleasure to ride on the street . Just a ton more power now . No regrets whatsoever.
Darn these awesome videos - they are giving me that “mo power”problem. I’m starting to think I need the 1200 to 1275 , the N4, and better springs or something.. and THEN my Sportster will be .purrrfect!! Mind you I already love it stock.
I put 10 thousand miles on my XLC 883 then went with an S and S 1225 bolt on. Rode a bunch this season. I'm thinking cams next. Thank you for the great information.
Your right Brother,no need to do a stage 1 if you're going to do the stage 2 upgrade, just go for the stage 2 to begin with, I'm fixing to do the stage 2 to my M8, thanks for sharing brother and ride safe and keep the kneese in the breeze 👍🏼💯
I have a 2010 xl1200c and I’m at 83/83 with my stage one. Rush slip on 2” baffles. 65 degree Arlen ness intake. FP3 tuner. Tuned it myself on the street.
Rush makes a damn good slip on with the stock header, it makes more power in the low to mid range than most 2 into 1 exhaust. Even more on top than a lot two into ones, overall it's the way to go. That's some really good power you're making!
I have a 2017 Hammer kit 585 cams, heads, cobra mufflers..48 throttle body..it DYNOED at 130 horse. Anderson cams..extras..we pushed it to 160 horse but too much for a 5 speed..oversized harley oil cooler. Keeps it at 250 with Amsoil ..130 horses is plenty in Florida!!!!
I’m gonna call BS on that one there’s a UA-cam or in Orlando blockhead has a 1275 hammer kit with everything in the kitchen sink thrown at it throttle body cam lifters valves intake 0 stock engine parts and a master Harley technician of 25 years as his tuner and they could only get 112 rear wheel hp you can get more if you cheat with a spoke rear tire and a chain conversion but that’s just bluffing the dyno numbers
It does Thanks it’s a special polished Motor.. We worked on it along time over a year.. Clutches had to be changed So it’s definitely A NO BULLSHIT ENGINE!!!!! It smokes 131-s like gravy but the power is there!!!!
@@GixxerFoo I have the screaming eagle air cleaner , screaming eagle tuner the black box not the orange and 3” Vance and Hines slipons . Lookin at my dyno sheet it’s actually 85.48 hp and 81.30 torque. Max hp @6100-6300. Had the tune done @harley cus of my warranty.
@jeremys7479 yes sir got the dyno sheet to prove it . That’s what happens when you have a master tech that’s been doin it forever workin on your bike lol
Great video. Always enjoy your content. What cam you recommend for 22' 883, stock heads, fp4 tuner, highflow intake, cobra speedster 909'. Low/mid power.
I heard the guys at DK Customs saying something about Sportsters not getting up past 5200 R.P.M.s, unless you're riding really fast, I think. I probably wouldn't want to mess with cams, unless I converted to a 1200 or 1275 kit, because I don't want to be buying cams more than once. I don't even know, if I would get a 1275 kit, unless I could get lower compression pistons, because I've been told that, if I use my bike as a daily rider, it's not good to have a high compression motor. I'd love to get the kit, if that's possible. I'm happy with both of my 883s, though, so I don't know what I'm missing. It would just be nice, for longer trips, to push through the wind, a little easier.
NHRS jugs with S&S 11.2 pistons and thin base and head gaskets. XB heads Ported, N4 cams, dyna 2000 ignition HSR42 and Dan moto 2-1 I haven’t had on a dyno yet but it rips.
Have a 2019 883. Installing a sawicki 2 into 1 & Hammer intake, then throwin it on a dyno w a TTS Master Tuner. Will rock that for a while, then in future do a Hammer 1275 kit🤘🏻💨💨💨
I would do 1275 motor + 570 cams and keep the head stock. Got a 2012 Sportster which has good heads already anyway. Best bang for the buck if you’re just street riding. Start changing the head and valves and you’re already doubling the price. I already have an upgraded clutch since I blew the stock clutch first 2 years of owning my Sportster. Upgraded front/rear suspension already, and a dynojet tuner which was the best upgrade. Hell, I’m not even in a hurry to upgrade my motor and cam since the tuner has changed my ride dramatically already.
Hey i have a 883 from 09 it has vince and Heins short shots and KN forward airfilter. But it has not got Any fuelpack tuned yet. What tuner is it you got ? Im planing on increse the power but im not willing to do Any replacements of the cams or cylindere yet before i have ridden it for some more time.
@@ruthlessinu626 yes my plan is to do more with the bike in the future diffrent upgrades and ect to the engine. But for now it Will only be a stage 1. What is a dynojet powervision ? And what dos i do and what can i expect to gain in HP and Torge from this with exoust and filter Sorry for asking im still very new to this. its my first bike vý
@@bjrnkristensen8132look into dynojet powervision. Others can explain it better than me. But from recent search, the one I got is discontinued. It’s the one with touch screen that can be used to display gauges. That model is now near double the price on the market since being discontinued. Dynojet have the newer models though. But with Hammer Performance, they prefer DJPV. Reach out to them for opinions, especially if you plan using their products
I went with a 505/515 feuling because I stuck a turbo on my 04 roadster. Someone pulled the big cams out for W cams, so the bike ran ok with W cams but I wanted to match or even come close to the hot rod cams that were in it. It will work out ok with the duration opening and closing differently it’ll bleed some of my compression so I can run higher boost in the future. Bike isn’t don’t yet but should see a big increase with the cams. I do run on the freeway so I wanted more upper range than the W stock cams with the turbo. I hope to get 110WHP on 91 and no methanol injection but I’m not sure if that’s going to be in the future or not. Doctor Motorcycle in Phoenix is working on my bike, check him out he does great work!
Its 1 crank per cycle. 2 pistons connected to 1 crank. It's only 50% better than a 1 cylinder motor. Your motor must do 11 more cycles to catch up to a V12.
Thanks for the informative video! For my 2009 XL1200C, I've already done a stage 1. V&H straight shots, full set, no baffles. V&H "fuelpak" and "Big Sucka" air cleaner. Interested in your thoughts for a HD or Hammer stage 2 upgrade, for my south florida riding, lots of wide open roads, no winter or city riding.
Another informative video for anyone with a sportster , very cool 😎 my spare set of 883 heads are on there way back from Hammer Prefomance rite now . Had them do the Impact level head work with the prefomance valve job . Very excited . Also just picked up a new Kerker Supermeg 2-1 exaughst as well . Gonna swap out my Vance and Hines short shots I have on there now . I may sell the short shots after the swap ... first I want to see how well the Kerker Supermeg preforms . Then I’ll decide if I want to sell the short shots . Looking forward to all the upgrades. May wait till winter and let my mechanic do it all then. Not sure yet . Thanks for another good video . Nice job brother . Stay Cool Bro 👍
Also have a new Dan Moto 2-1 exahgst as well that I never installed . I like the look of the Kerker better . So I may sell the Dan Moto pipes as well🤔your bike is looking sick 👍I like it a lot . What’s your next prefomance upgrade/plan my brother???
That's super exciting news! I think you'll love the performance of that Kerker. They've always made great exhaust in the past and produced solid results. You'll have to let me know what you think of those heads when you get them back from Hammer. For my bike l think l am gonna go with Hammer 570 cams. I love how the W cams perform and if l can get more in that range l am going for it!
GixxerFoo I agree with you on the hammer 570 Cams , I wanted to get a side of those myself. But the top dead center lift is too much for my 883 heads with 10 to 1 compression and reversed dome pistons. I ended up with the 1275 standard big bore kit with the 10 to 1 dished Pistons instead of the 30° dome pistons 10 1/2 to 1 compression. So because of that I can’t use the 570 cams. But I did use Andrews n4 cams and I love them . They are really good just a little more noisy than the W cams but I have no problem with that
. I definitely hope you get a set of hammer cams I’d like to hear your opinion. If I can figure out how to put some pictures up I’ll send you some pictures of the heads when I get them back so you can see them
I'd live to see what they did with your heads, l have no doubt it is top quality work! I really want to build in stages so l can feel difference. I know it's more work but l want to be thorough.
stiffer valve springs, and lighter valve gear, actually does make top end power, ( hang with me here ), the further the valve-train is from floating, the more energy is returned to the engine... think of riding fast over a hill; and feeling lighter , past the crest, on the way down ... power is lost to valve train inertia that way, so stiffer springs, or lighter valve-train components, make more top end power by returning it more.. ( that's right, those quickie push rods might be convenient, but they are a performance downgrade ) i am doing an 883 that currently has the old D cam, ( and on a budget ), so i am thinking Andrews N2, up the compression a smidgen, port and polish, 2 into1 tuner, high flow intake, jet for 14.7-15 AFR on a gauge. " 14.7 -15 AFR " what are you nuts dude ? " Right ? .... no seriously, *liquids do not compress* and i will Not need to increase my compression ratio with wasted fuel, and i Do Not plan on revving my engine to the point that the exhaust valves are opening before the charge has finished burning..( i can use up to 6K3rpm, on a 3.811" stroke ) *It's An MPG Hot Rod, so chill* ; it's not a girls bike for as long as there are still girls who are heavier than me.
I keep wondering about the Fuelung Reaper?? I have a stock 883 (except for k&N air filter and I modified the stock exhaust. I live in middle Tennessee but I ride in East Tennessee in the mountains quite a bit and some on the interstate. I am wanting more low end and midrange. I see now my best bet is to bore up to 1200. I am so thankful for your channel. You are saving me quite a bit of money. Thanks!
I really appreciate the support! If you're upgrading your 883 you might look at a 1275 from Hammer. They can set you up with a kit that uses your stock heads or you can send the heads in and have them work them over. The 1275 kit produces some nice torque gains, especially on a Sportster!
Call Hammer Performances engine builder Fred yesterday Told him $$$ is not an o option He said start with a XL1200 because the (heads) are good , then get a 7.50 cam & Energy One Clutch till the end of the season , break them both in together Then , IN THE WINTER IT'S 😢TOO COLD TO RIDE go full on 1275-130+ b.b.k With HEADS PORTED , HI-COMP PISTONS . With , Brass drive gear , ETC. . And probably make my own Header . ❤
Man, I gotta say my 2005 XL1200 Sportster after putting on a Mikuni, jetting it, plugs, Screaming Eagle II slipons, and right angle cone breather the flipping bike was way fast. I pulled 72 or 74 on the dyna. If I was on it the bike would jump outa my hands romping into second gear and take a moment for the front wheel to come back down to earth. The idea of cams scared the crap outa me. I was already getting too comfy with the speed and power. I was working to tone myself down for God’s sakes. Just saying... I’m in Pasadena Ca so lots of congestion to deal with on the road.
Sportster engines have a lot of potential, especially now that Hammer has that bolt on 1275. It's pretty easy with compression, cams and big bore to break 100 horse.
What would you recommend for a 2016 sporster 883 iron with a screaming eagle 1200 big bore kit, arlen ness big sucker air filter, V&H short shots exhaust and FP3 tuner I'm trying to upgrade my cams but not sure what to get, just trying to get more overall power, appreciate your response, thanks.
I talked to Dan Hammer and he said if you’re not gonna have head work done the most he would go would be with a Andrews N2 or if you have D cams go to the W‘s cams because it’s just gonna push the torque farther to the right of the Dino graph
That is very true, unfortunately if you rigid mounted Sportster 1200 the head work is mandatory. Those heads were really not performance oriented, but if you have rubber mounted bike those heads will handle quite a bit of power up to about 100 horsepower.
@@GixxerFoo my heads they are at HAMMER right now getting the Impact Head CNC porting done to them and a few other things done to them that is done all the way up to the 90 HP Package my package is going to be set at 10.1 compression right now but I’m gonna talk to him tomorrow about setting it at 10.5.1 I got the 1250 package. I have cycle shack full exhaust system S&S air cleaner S&S Super E 48mm carb Andrews N4 cams And a new ignition system that was in the package I let you know how much HP My predictions on horsepower is probably 105 to 110 that was at 10.1 I like torque more than horsepower
Thanks for that was think of a cam but now not as power vs cost of part and fitting not worth it personally and the fact they sellect each cam for quietness to each engine i like the sound of my minx so i'll keep my money a great help really like the impartiality of the presentation too of your videos
I have a 96 1200 custom. I'm looking to do 10.5:1 pistons and contacting hammer for a set of cams... how high would you feel is a safe rpm limit on the stock heads? And is there a reasonably priced ignition module you'd reccomend? Thanks, Derek.
That's a damn good setup! N4 cams are hard to beat on the 2003 and earlier models. The 2007 and up factory heads are basically copies of the Buell Thunderstorm heads.
GixxerFoo, appreciate your input. I am changing now my 2003 from 883 to stock 1200 cc , only by replacing to stock 1200 barrels and pistons to wiseco K0213PS which are designed for 883 to 1200 swap application. But I can choose 8,5 , 9,5 or 10,5 compression ratio . My questions is if i like to drive in low RPM range and I will have W cams , what compression ratio I should choose . Does 10,5 compression gives any advantage on low RPM, would say to 3500 rmp? Hope you got my question . Just your humble opinion?
@@GixxerFoo Appreciate your reaction. My idea is to use stock 883 heads , with stock 1200 cc barrels . I made a mistake - wiseco K0213P pistons says they are 10>1. So I guess I can go for W cams? I heard I will have to work on them in order to to timing cup? I have no clue, but will figure it out when I get my W .
Currently looking to purchase an 883 or 1200 Sportster . Either one , as soon as i get it will be treated to a HAMMER 1275 KIT HAMMER 570 CAM OIL COOLER & RECLUSE CLUTH KIT
Check out my videos, I have the Feuling reaper 505/515 cams and am doing a 1250cc kit when the season is over here in Canada (November). Feuling claims 94hp at 6500rpm with an exhaust, intake and tuner on a 1200cc which is AMAZING, and I was skeptical at first but after I got it properly tuned I can believe it! These cams work AMAZING and the sound they create is top notch. They also offer a larger Sportster cams (reaper 580) which requires valve springs, and lifters. I have feuling valve springs and lifters to install with my 1250, but aince the bike is so new I was able to leave the stock lifters for now and they don't have to be upgraded with the cams, it is just a recomendation. The Feuling 505/515 cams really brought the bike to life and I am incredibly happy with them. That being said, you can not go wrong with the Hammer Performance 1275+ supporting components like cams and whatnot! I think you will be happy either way! As for the Hammer 560, gaining a few hp after 5500rpm is basically useless. Most people are shifting between 5500-6500 so unless you ride the bike wide open above 5500rpm all the time there wouldn't be much to notice.
@@jonnymac8925 How is the torque? I have a 1250 with 883 heads. I threw W cams in over the stock D. Would I lose alot of torque from the W cams? I have a thunderheader and Dyna ski tuner

@@GixxerFoo I need a "bump" but not ready to pay for the 1200+ kit....Already have a power vision, autotune and all that crap so this might be a good option.
Yeah a 570 would be a good addition, but instead of the 1200 kit going with a Hammer 1275 kit would be a really good investment since you already have the Power Vision.
I’m new to this. Basically, if I get a tune, better exhaust, high flow intake, and hammer cams. I can get a 1200 Sportster keeping up with dynas and soft tails all for way cheaper and do it myself minus the tune?

I got the perfect cam for you and it's an absolute banger over stock. Check out the Hammer performance 570 cams, they are bolt in on the 2019 and they don't rob your low end for the top end. It's like the stock W cam but builds on the torque and you gain top end horsepower without any loss in the power curve anywhere.

Don't Forget to Mention: Dual Fire Ignitions do not sit well with cam upgrades. and, honestly, if i would have had a W cam, i would not have felt the need to swap in aftermarket cams . i had the old D-cams, and single fire ignition; so it cost me $800 to swap into my N2s
That's a great point about the the single fire ignitions! The W cams are hard to beat since most Sportster cams take from the bottom and give to the top. The only Sportster cams l have found that can beat a W cam all around power and give nothing up is the Hammer 570 cams.
@@GixxerFoo so you can imagine a single fire ignition given a higher overlap cam ..... i did ahead of time, i am sure the rear cylinder would back-fired to no end. i got the Twin Tech ignition, and my N2s put peak torque up around 4K2 with my custom welded pipes...different pipes make any cam different.
The best cam and doing nothing else to the bike is Hammers 570 cam. That is the only cam I have seen improve over the factory W cam without sacrificing power anywhere. If you're absolutely not worried about top end or the upper end of the mid range the Andrews W2 is a straight up low end cam. It will cut your top end power though so just keep that in mind.
This is very interesting. Would a tuner be needed for this mod and additional work (like what Screaming Eagle wants with extra parts for the upgrade)? Can you jump from stock to Stage 2 cams without pipes and air intake mods (adding them later)? This is something to think about and lots more research that I need to do.
With cams it would definently need a tune, but yes it can be tuned for a new set of cams while using the stock air cleaner and exhaust. Timing is the most important part, you can get an aftermarket tune for a stock bike and it will make a huge difference.

@@RulgertGhostalker so do you think I need a high volume oil pump for my 2000 sportster 883 w the 1200 wiseco kit and the heads are done? The only thing left is cams now. It runs really good now but I still want more of course
If you were to bore the cases Hammer does have 88 and 90 inch kits. Hammer can put together a 120+ horsepower package but it will run you about 6 grand and that's if you assemble it yourself.
If you have a good cam like the Hammer 560 on a late model injected bike with the good heads and a really good exhaust it is possible. Adding 10.5:1 compression will further solidify that. But if you have a 03 or earlier the stock heads are awful for performance, you'll need some head work there.
You can add cams to the 883 but it's really not worth it unless you're doing some kind of spec class racing. They will make some power but you're very limited by displacement.
Hammer Performance 1275 Kit and a set of their 560 or 570 cams with a good solid two into one exhaust with a solid dyno tune and that will make it happen.
50 or 75 CC isn't gonna make.Any d*** difference in power would have to be the components that are much better.Eye compression or something 'cause fifty six damn thing
Andrews makes some good cams, best I've seen is that 570 from Hammer if you're going to just bolt in. The 560 if you're gonna do the big bore kit with 10.5:1 compression.
I love my cam'd Sporty! Check out my channel, I added a few videos of it from when I first picked it up in October to how it sits now! It has come a long way and it is my favourite bike I have ever owmed or riden. It's too much fun!
Camming them out is frickin awesome, they sound bad ass and you can tailor your power where you want it. Harder to find a cam that doesn't kill bottom end on the sportster.
I appreciate you watching and supporting the channel! What kind of cam would you go for? Would you go for a low to mid range cam or get one for top end?
Low to mid. Much more useful for urban riding.
It's hard to find to beat the factory W cam for low to mid. Most Sportster cams rob the low and mid for top end. Hammer's 570 is about the only cam l have found that beats the factory cam everywhere.
low to mid range
Stock cams for reliability. Stage 1 pipes/cleaner/tune. But how about skipping Stage 2 and 3 and adding Stage 4 ported and shaved heads for some more compression and flow?
Definitely low to midrange. My research made me decide to go with the Hammer 570 cam too when the time comes.
My little Sportster is 110 HP, thanks to Hammer Performance. Yippee.
👍 l bet you surprise some people with that bike, l bet it's hard to keep the front wheel down too!
The 110 kit is pretty expensive, good for you man !

106 mph in 3rd gear?????

How much did that run you
Glad to see you back doing vids, glad your doing good through all this mess
Thank you! I got side tracked with life there for a bit lol, hope you're doing well with all this too!
I converted my old 883 evo rigid mount to 1200 and installed the Andrews N4 cams. Very happy with these cams, would not go back. Big power from 4K rpm to redline. I had head work done too, and a good two into one pipe
That Andrews N4 is a great cam! They perform really well for the street, sounds like you've one everything right!
How about the vibrationd? Did you notice a big increase?

( that's right, those quickie push rods might be convenient, but they are a performance downgrade )
i am doing an 883 that currently has the old D cam, ( and on a budget ),
so i am thinking Andrews N2, up the compression a smidgen, port and polish, 2 into1 tuner, high flow intake, jet for 14.7-15 AFR on a gauge.
" 14.7 -15 AFR " what are you nuts dude ? " Right ? .... no seriously, *liquids do not compress* and i will Not need to increase my compression ratio with wasted fuel,
and i Do Not plan on revving my engine to the point that the exhaust valves are opening before the charge has finished burning..( i can use up to 6K3rpm, on a 3.811" stroke )
*It's An MPG Hot Rod, so chill* ; it's not a girls bike for as long as there are still girls who are heavier than me.
I keep wondering about the Fuelung Reaper?? I have a stock 883 (except for k&N air filter and I modified the stock exhaust.

My 95 1200 has Andrews N4 cams and Buell Thunderstorm heads.
The W cams will not like 10.5:1 compression, they will do well at 10:1 with careful tuning. Are you retaining the stock 883 heads?
@@GixxerFoo Appreciate your reaction. My idea is to use stock 883 heads , with stock 1200 cc barrels . I made a mistake - wiseco K0213P pistons says they are 10>1. So I guess I can go for W cams?
W cam is really the best all around cam for a Sportster. It's hard to beat the power and torque the W delivers over the D.
@@GixxerFoo Agreed! The W is a epic cam especially on older sports. But how I ride tend to puts me at something like a N4 cam but hammer said i cant use because my 883 head and said the 505 is simular just less power. I dont mind losing some torque if its not a terrible amount
Love your content! I'd like to see a comparison between the 1275 Hammer vs the 90 inch Hammer. What are the advantages of the 90 inch kit if any?
Interesting. Adding cubes we all know adds power. Wonder what effect them jack hammer cams have on a 2010 883?
The 570 would add a nice little bump to to the 883, not a whole lot but you would feel it.
Really want to get the 120hp 1275 upgrade for my 883. Lot of money! 😬
Hammer can make you go fast on a Sportster, but it's some big buck to do it right.
I’m new to this. Basically, if I get a tune, better exhaust, high flow intake, and hammer cams. I can get a 1200 Sportster keeping up with dynas and soft tails all for way cheaper and do it myself minus the tune?
or if you get and old used 883 with the D cams, get cams...a 1200 kit would just choke more on the D cams.
W cams are a excellent upgrade, only thing that really beats the W cams for low end and mid range is Hammer's 570's.
Any opinion on upgrading an ‘02 Hugger with an S&S Hooligan kit? Looking to get better performance out of my bike vs spending twice as much on a larger bike. Hooligan kit includes a cam kit. Appreciate your professional opinion and experience. My Indy shop is an S&S shop, so they prefer going this route over Hammer Perf. Thx in advance!
GixxerFoo, what cam on a 1200 will be good for maximum torque off idle to high r.p.m.? Thank You. 👍👍
Hey there, what do think about a 2005 1200 custom carbureted bike? Is it a good bike? Thinking of buying it with 6,800 miles on it.
I had a 06 Vince Hines pipes rejeted carb and a se 551 cams ran good. But it needed a ignition modular. It would it the rev limiter around 5500 rpm .I wanted to put the rev limiter 6500 .but I crashed the bike
Dang that sucks, hope you were alright!
Great vid!
ur bike is slow shut up redline
Are you able to use the FP3 for a tuner with a 465 Reaper cam on a 114 M8?
What CAMS do you recommend for an 03 Sportster 1200 custom 100 yr? I have a stage one, and want to upgrade to a stage two. Just CAMS. Just want a little extra power and torque, don’t plan on upgrading it more than that. Just want to have power when I needed. 2003 Sportster 1200 custom, full Vance and Hines for exhaust, high flow air filter, never ride two up, I cruise at low rpm’s. Once and w hike have a Burst or two.
I would check out the Andrews N4, that's an excellent cam upgrade for a rigid mount bike!
I have a 2019 iron 1200. I’ve been thinking about a cam upgrade. What cam would you recommend? I know I’m limiting myself, but I want a drop in cam.
@@GixxerFoo thanks for the recommendation. I will go and check out that cam
Hi,I have an '11 XR1200 with K&N intake and aftermarket slip ons,and wanna know what cams are good fpr low mid range gains,or are the stock cams in the XRs already performance?I dont want top end speed but more power thru the gears and to make the idle sound better ,please respond🙂thanks!!
2008 883c stage one and mine dynoed at 59 hp.
Tomorrow I'm buying a 2009 XL 1200 with 2,800 miles mint , Woman Owned , just completely serviced at Local Harley Dealer
My Question is ;
Whats the the most cost effective way to add Torque/Horsepower ???
My thinking is :
Fit some Hammer10.5-1 H.C. Pistons $300
Hammer 560 or 570 cams .$500
Hammer "Crush" heads $1100.
I'm hoping to get 100+ Trqe/Hpr.
Let me know ?
Any ideas ?
Of course I'll talk with Aron @Hammer Performance also 😎
Thanks in advance Riders
I would like to get those cams for my 06 Sportster 1200.. do you have a link for those ?
Which cam set are you interested in?
.585
Sportster 883 2006
Don't Forget to Mention:
Dual Fire Ignitions do not sit well with cam upgrades.
and, honestly, if i would have had a W cam, i would not have felt the need to swap in aftermarket cams . i had the old D-cams, and single fire ignition; so it cost me $800 to swap into my N2s
For a XL 1200 C 2017 model , which is the best cam for more torque ?
H-D Installed Pin Oilers, ( "oil sqirters" ) When They Went To The W Cam .... All The Aftermarket Cam Girders Need To Reconsider Their Profiles Ground For Pre-Pin Oiler Sportsters.
That was good tech from Buell right there, Andrews and Hammer make great cams for rigid Sportsters. I still think Andrews grinds Hammer's cams for them but Andrews told me they couldn't confirm or deny lol.
@@GixxerFoo i recently found out that Ultima makes a "High Volume Oil Pump" that will fit my pre-pin oiler... so the answer is " increase the big end sling " when camming pre-pin oiler sporties.
@@GixxerFoo no problems 04 and on, the ones with pin oilers can pretty much handle anything you throw at them.
but i would definitely suggest a high volume oil pump when camming 03 and earlier model Sportsters..
@@GixxerFoo the only solution for camming pre-pin oiler Sportsters ( 2003 and earlier ) is installing a high volume oil pump with the cam swap..
i figured that out after my comment here.
@@RulgertGhostalker so do you think I need a high volume oil pump for my 2000 sportster 883 w the 1200 wiseco kit and the heads are done? The only thing left is cams now. It runs really good now but I still want more of course
Thanks for all this info!
You're welcome, let me know if you have any questions or video suggestions!
good channel , thanks
Thank you, I hope it was helpful!
I got that hp and torque with just a stage 1 and dyno tune . Well I got 85.5 hp and 81 torque
It's really surprising what a exhaust and tune will pull on a 1200!
What if I have mine bored out to a 1380 with a screaming eagle clutch and is straight piped what can I do to make it faster and go to a track and race
If you were to bore the cases Hammer does have 88 and 90 inch kits. Hammer can put together a 120+ horsepower package but it will run you about 6 grand and that's if you assemble it yourself.
Did I hear this correct 100hp from a cam and exhaust?
If you have a good cam like the Hammer 560 on a late model injected bike with the good heads and a really good exhaust it is possible. Adding 10.5:1 compression will further solidify that. But if you have a 03 or earlier the stock heads are awful for performance, you'll need some head work there.
@@GixxerFoo 08 1200c
There is no camshaft upgrade for a stock 883. Stage II on an 883 is a bore increase.
You can add cams to the 883 but it's really not worth it unless you're doing some kind of spec class racing. They will make some power but you're very limited by displacement.
Really? Because I can list a few cams that are drop in cams for the 883
@@beardedforlife3740 go for it
@@eveythingthatsadam Andrews N2, N3, N4, and SE .497 cams all bolt right in with no extra changes
How will this effect mpg?
I put "P" cams in Sporster's back in the late 60's...
How can I increase my 2012 1200 custom to 100hp
Hammer Performance 1275 Kit and a set of their 560 or 570 cams with a good solid two into one exhaust with a solid dyno tune and that will make it happen.
Turbo.
Cheapest, safest way to make power.
And it won't overheat your motor.
The chicken 585 is a joke! haha And who the hell would spend that kind of money and keep 883 displacement! bahahahahahaha I guess fueling lol
The only reason I could see anyone wanting to keep the 883 displacement would be for some kind of spec class racing.
7000 rpm on the EVO engine . is that safe for the engine organes ?
Anything I'd safe till it's not...
I would need a cam for 11-1 pistons . Want to make the hyaboosa my bitch
Damn that's some compression now!
50 or 75 CC isn't gonna make.Any d*** difference in power would have to be the components that are much better.Eye compression or something 'cause fifty six damn thing
I think I'm gonna run andrews n6
1275 big bore, +300 30deg dome pistons and super stock heads, drag pipes because brap, jetted cv40 she's spicey already

Why would you maniacs want to spend a ton of money upgrading the beginner bike?!
