  • Model 172. Copper oxide finish with beech blades; painted over institutional green probably sometime in the 40s or 50s. Uses a 3-speed snap-switch via a rod running through the oil cup. Manufactured at some point around 1915. This fan is blindingly powerful, with speeds of
Plucked out of an abandoned municipal building/courthouse. The building was built in 1927, which makes this fan particularly strange, as Century switched to the 'closed-top' variety at some point in the late teens. The building was abandoned in 2001, leaving the fan exposed to the elements for 15 years; the institutional green lead paint helped to preserve the blades.

It really sucks how they would have left something as collectible as THAT in a building, and essentialy throwing it away. Glad you saved it!

Having a fan like this is very nice indeed. But finding and rescuing it yourself makes it that much better!

The blades were probably not warped badly because fans that old were extremely well built. Later on, they started making cheap fans with blades that droop easily.

Wow, that's a very powerful fan! Although it's been more than 100 years old, it still runs perfectly.

Checked out your other fans. You have some nice older fans but this is an amazing and rare fan, maybe a once in a lifetime find.

Looking for one of these to put in my place. I’m restoring a building from 1901 and in it I already have installed a 1921 General Electric with the ge vents, a 1906 hunter tuerk type C and a hunter original. I’d also love to acquire an Emerson long nose

It’s too little metal to do anything good with. They would have to pull it off the ceiling, and any ceiling fan, even an iron cast Original, isn’t even really worth half a dollar.

If you’ve ever played the Nuketown map in Call of Duty, there is a house on the map that has two upstairs. When I was younger, my cousin and I would pretend that they were “evil fans” and he would shoot them. After finally realizing what they were, I asked him to not do that anymore, lol

that thing could use 5 speeds XP, 30 rpm, 60, and the 3 factory speeds also this thing would give my mega fan run for its money...

Hunter Original bearings seem to work fine. I believe the shaft size is 1".

I appreciate it. I’m watching the wobble for now. I have it U mounted to a 75 rated box but I’m not sure how to balance it and don’t want to take chances, though I’ve run it all day with no loosening and no movement at the mount. Would you consider this wobble dangerous? Or should I only be worried in more extreme cases?
