Actually, Sony dropped him right after signing him, thinking he was crazy. He went thru years with Dr's telling him his sickness was in his head. But he really had Lyme Disease, which was left untreated and has really caused a lot of damage.
Well I'm glad he's not with a record label who will steal all his money and tell him what to make! I bet he'll do better on his own! I have learned about his Lyme disease through the comments and I'm so glad he's getting treatment rather than having doctors just throw pills at him! This is the exact reason I don't trust the "medical system".
Well, that Sony part did not really happen that way. He told the story in one of the interviews he did lately. It is true that he was "found" when busking in Brighton, and he started working on music for an album with them, and very shortly after that he started to having pain and mental symptoms. This led to him not being able to work (basically being bed bound) so he could not fulfill his part of the contract and they together agreed on ending it. It was the doctors he had contact with that for a long time failed to realise that his symptoms was because of Lyme Disease, and instead treated him for depression, bipolar and other mental issues. He suffered with this for several years, until he eventually found a doctor that correctly diagnosed him. He managed to get the infection fixed, but he is still dealing with the consequences of the damage that this made to his body.
@@ancltube yeah i was just typing up a similar response, important to note it was Mutual, this wasn't Sony being d-bags because he became ill, although many seem to assume given the track record of big business.

I found Ren about 1 week ago. I feel lucky that I found him. I've listened to virtually everything he has available. And he has many. His singing voice is heavenly. Please bring Ren back on. A couple of favorites of mine are Power, How to be Me, Chalk Outlines He has a 3 part story that you have to do in order: Jenny's Tale Screech's Tale Violet's Tale
I watched his busking videos YEARS ago, but had no idea of his backstory or even his released songs, I feel dumb not looking into him further back then :/
@@MrsRealistic far as Rens music the trilogy Jenny's tale, Screech's tale, and Violets tale are the most interestingly strange musically oriented bit of true genius any artist has created that I've ever come across, and that says a lot coming from myself who doesn't turn a deaf ear or discount any genre, style, or era where music is concerned. The 3 songs mentioned can be found listed as jennys tale complete on UA-cam and run time for all parts is around 12 minutes total. If you thought Hi Ren was good, these 3 songs when played in order together will blow your freaking mind with the story they convey about "A girl named jenny, and a boy named Screech." I cant wait to see your reaction and take on this. Glad you found Ren, and his deep artistry, a great rabbit hole to find ones self falling into.
Nice reaction. I dont expect you to turn this into a Ren channel but Sick boi is the follow up to this and Chalk outlines is well worth a listen to see his range. Have a great day
I saw that a lot of people who already told you about his medical and health background. But there's a video he put out on his UA-cam page right before this song release and video. And she was in so much pain and he was crying you so upset and you could feel and see what he was going through at that moment and it's heart-wrenching. He posted today on his UA-cam Community page saying how yesterday he was in a great place and he felt good and medical was going all right. But then he found out today with some of the brain scan stuff they were doing that he's worse off than they thought he was. The poor man is going through hell trying to get better.
I heard he's getting treatment for Lyme disease and that he had been misdiagnosed for years. I hope he heals and is in a better place after years of pain!
He got lyme disease and had it for 10 years, the Doctors told him it was in his head. They just put him on all kinds of pills. Then he was finally treated for it but it has caused alot of damage. He had stem cell in the U.S. Now he is Canada getting more treatments. He has done alot of music. Watch Ren x Chinchilla - How to be me (live) Its about losing his friend to suicide.
Yes I'm learning about this through all of you guys. I'm not surprised he was just thrown pills and told he was crazy. Doctors don't actual heal anymore anymore. I hope his treatment is finally getting to the real issues and he heals for good!
I think this is the most profound piece of art i have ever seen or heard tbh. His ability to capture the inner struggle many of us have on varying levels and so accurately put it on display for every single person in the world to be able to relate is out of this world. I think it's unparalleled.

Wow, right like what was that!! I don’t really have any extra time and so I listen to reactions on my drives to and from work from to find artists I would have never heard otherwise. Then I can go right to an artist and listen to them in the background while I work see if I like some of their other stuff. I listen to so many different genres of music I love finding new sounds that catch my ear. So thank you for reacting to this one, someone I’ll certainly check out now ❤
This was the first song I had heard by Ren. The first time I heard a reaction to it I didn’t like it, after 2 or 3 other reactions I decided though the music is odd he is talented so I checked more out . My favorite is Money Game part 2. But if you are reacting to more I would start with Money Game. Glad to have you back!

This is day three of me watching reactions to this song, and this was one of the best I've seen. You managed to pick up on more of what Ren was saying than most, while managing to not become overtly emotional about it. Great job. Subscribed.
I use many of Ren's songs in my English lessons (internal monologues, overcoming struggles, or when trying to bridge the gap to Shakespearen texts) and I love your analysis. As well the insights you have on every Ren song. Well done!
I love this whole reaction. I love not only what you have to say but a big plus is that you have put the artist first. The fact that nearly the whole screen is the actual video I think helps the watcher to be pulled further into the performance.Great work! Please do some more Ren I think you might enjoy it.
Thank you for the comment! I like showcasing the video since this is what I'm reacting to! I appreciate the feedback! I will definitely be doing more Ren!
“Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 5 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of his songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard. His trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" is haunting and has an unforeseen conclusion. It needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. It has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. Ren recently released his single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. As mentioned above, his latest release, “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” is another masterful work.
Thank you so much for your comment! I really look forward to watching and listening to the trilogy next! And now I have a great list of others thanks to you! Cheers!
This is art of transcendent beauty and an *important* song. Artists often struggle with imposter syndrome. There’s a movie starring Olivia Munn called “Violet” that rings of this and was a transformative experience for me-much the same as this song resonates. As a person who’s never been able to escape negative self-talk and imposter syndrome, *realizing* that I can exert the strength that destructive voice questions-strength that already resides within me-was sooo important. It takes time to push past the negativity-to make your own voice stronger, but if anyone out there is struggling with this, please please please *know* that you can do it. *Know* that I believe in you… but you don’t need me to-just like you don’t need the shroud of doubt that feels first of protection and then as a prison. You are *stronger* than that voice. You are stronger than you can *possibly* know… until you push back with softness or aggression-your choice.
Thank you for sharing your story of triumph over adversity! I'll have to check out that movie! You are a very strong person! God bless you my friend! 🙏

The Meaning of Ren in Confucianism 2013-04-19 The core thought of Confucianism is Ren, but what is the meaning of Ren? Ren (or Rén) is the Confucian virtue denoting the good feeling a virtuous human experiences when being altruistic. Ren is exemplified by a normal adult's protective feelings for children. It is considered the inward expression of Confucian ideals. Yan Hui, Confucius's most outstanding student, once asked his master to describe the rules of Rén and Confucius replied, "One should see nothing improper, hear nothing improper, say nothing improper, do nothing improper." Confucius also defined Rén in the following way: "wishing to be established himself, seeks also to establish others; wishing to be enlarged himself, he seeks also to enlarge others." Another meaning of Rén is "not to do to others as you would not wish done to yourself." Confucius also said, "Rén is not far off; he who seeks it has already found it." Rén is close to man and never leaves him. Nature of Rén Rén relies heavily on the relationships between two people, but at the same time encompasses much more than that. It represents an inner development towards an altruistic goal, while simultaneously realizing that one is never alone, and that everyone has these relationships to fall back on, being a member of a family, the state, and the world. Rén is not a concept that is learned; it is innate, that is to say, everyone is born with the sense of Rén. Confucius believed that the key to long-lasting integrity was to constantly think, since the world is continually changing at a rapid pace. There have been a variety of definitions for the term Rén. Rén has been translated as "benevolence", "perfect virtue", "goodness" or even "human-heartedness". When asked, Confucius defined it by the ordinary Chinese word for love, ai, saying that it meant to "love others". Rén also has a political dimension. Confucianism says that if the ruler lacks Rén, it will be difficult for his subjects to behave humanely. Rén is the basis of Confucian political theory; the ruler is exhorted to refrain from acting inhumanely towards his subjects. An inhumane ruler runs the risk of losing the Mandate of Heaven or, in other words, the right to rule. A ruler lacking such a mandate need not be obeyed, but a ruler who reigns humanely and takes care of the people is to be obeyed, for the benevolence of his dominion shows that he has been mandated by heaven. Confucius himself had little to say on the active will of the people, though he believed the ruler should definitely pay attention to the wants and needs of the people and take good care of them. Mencius, however, did state that the people's opinion on certain weighty matters should be polled. Rén also includes traits that are a part of being righteous, such as hsin, meaning to make one's words compliment his actions; li, which means to properly participate in everyday rituals; ching, or "seriousness"; and yi, which means right action. When all these qualities are present, then one can truly be identified as a chün tzu (君子), or "superior man," which means a morally superior human being. Confucians basically held the view that government should be run by ethically superior human beings who concentrate solely on the welfare of the people they govern

It's fascinating to me how hyped up people are by a musician who does absolutely nothing for me. Also, why has his accent changed so dramatically from how he sounded 10 years ago or less?
I guess it's not your taste. 🤷♀️ Not everyone likes the same music. I don't know what his accent sounded like 10 years ago since I just discovered him recently. I have heard him in an interview and he sounded just like he did in this video. My family is actually from England and after they moved to Canada when my dad was 13, my dad totally lost his accent, as did his siblings, and my nan and granddad's accents were considerably less thick.
@@13strong Well, I will say, Ren is an amazing lyricist and guitar player. To play a guitar like that takes major talent (my eldest daughter plays acoustic guitar). Michael Jackson was a showman and a great singer, but didn't play any instruments.
Comparing Ren to Tom MacDonald is a little embarrassing. Tom is a Canadian who rocks confederate flags. Make sense out of that, please. He's clearly grifting. Whereas Ren is telling the truth about himself. I liked this reaction, but you should know bs when you see it.
I'm not comparing him as an artist, I said that people like him, Tom and Burden, etc are unapologetically themselves. Clearly Ren is as well since he is opening up about his struggles. I'd love proof of Tom rocking confederate flags. 😂
@Mrs. Realistic he literally does it, unironically, in the video of a song he did with Mad Child. I don't remember what it's called. I used to like Tom. But lately he's on that right wing grifting bs that pays so well.
@@TheEMFB I think we have to take everything with a grain of salt. That was about "white trash", and honestly, I really thought it was a great song. Upchurch has no qualms about voicing his love for the confederate flag. It means something different for different people. I love Upchurch and ACal who speak loudly about their love for this country. I really like what Tom does, and if it opens people's eyes, then power to him. Of course he knows what sells, and he's great at it. Isn't that the point... making money doing what you love? I'm not going to knock an artist for finding a niche and making money. He's stayed pretty true to who he is and has used a lot of that money to help others. I love all kinds of music and all kinds of people. I can't pretend to know anyone personally just by hearing their music. Anyone can fake it I guess lol!
@Mrs. Realistic well, I didn't want to turn this into a debate about a flag. I was pointing out the phoniness of a Canadian showing it off. But for one, it's a racist symbol now any way you slice it. And beyond that, it represents the half of the country that didn't want to be part of the USA. That's literally as unpatriotic as it gets. PS I love some of Upchurch's music. But defending that flag hurts people.
@Mrs. Realistic This is kinda random, but have you heard Tom MacDonald-Wannabe? It's an old one and I would be interested in your reaction. But if not, you should at least listen to it on your own time. It's really good! ✌️☝️❤️

This is probably the best, most thoughtful understanding reaction I’ve watched.
You really understood him.
Thank you so much for your kind comment! His talent is unreal and I hope he's finally recognized as the genius he is!
Not sure what it is, but your reaction meant something to me. Subbed

So glad you got to watch this. This song absolutely hits home to do many people for different reasons. Hope you are well!
Yes, it can speak to everyone, no matter what it is that you've been through!
Yes this was live, 1 take ;)
EPIC! 🤯
If you check out Jonathan Hiller's reaction to Hi Ren, in the comments you'll see Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed it, clarify how they did it. Audio may be from one take but the video is not, unlike many other Samuel-Ren collaborations.
@@hmo_mackey I was talking the audio... but figured it was also possibly filmed at same time but from 3 different camera angles. I will have to check it out ;) THX
@@hmo_mackey thank you!

This is a great song to be introduced to Ren. He was signed by Sony until he fell I'll with Lyme disease. They let Ren out of his contact and the World has been graced with his Bardcore ability.

Thank you! I heard he was misdiagnosed with numerous other things until they finally found out it was Lyme disease! I'm so glad he's getting treatment for it now that he has the root cause!
@@MrsRealistic, his song Sick Boi elaborates on some of that as well.

Screech's Tale
Violet's Tale
His work is so refreshing! Thank you for the list! I'm really glad I found him too!
@@MrsRealistic he's got many sides. Rap, Sing, Performance art.... Just so interesting
I watched his busking videos YEARS ago, but had no idea of his backstory or even his released songs, I feel dumb not looking into him further back then :/
@@MrsRealistic far as Rens music the trilogy Jenny's tale, Screech's tale,
and Violets tale are the most interestingly strange musically oriented bit of true genius any artist has created that I've ever come across, and that says a lot coming from myself who doesn't turn a deaf ear or discount any genre, style, or era where music is concerned. The 3 songs mentioned can be found listed as jennys tale complete on UA-cam and run time for all parts is around 12 minutes total. If you thought
Hi Ren was good, these 3
songs when played in order together will blow your freaking mind with the story they convey about "A girl named jenny, and a boy named Screech." I cant wait to see your reaction and take on this. Glad you found Ren, and his deep artistry, a great rabbit hole to find ones self falling into.

@@MrsRealistic I'm definitely a new sub! Loving the reaction videos - great job!
First time tuned into your channel & loved your real natural reaction you give to your fans & now you have a new fan
Thank you for your kind comment! And thanks for the sub! 🙏😁

Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).”
As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful.
You are stronger than you can *possibly* know…
until you push back with softness or aggression-your choice.
Thank you for sharing your story of triumph over adversity! I'll have to check out that movie! You are a very strong person! God bless you my friend! 🙏

It's amazing. I love that it's not studio recorded!
I love watching the reaction videos. It gets on my nerves watching a diagnoses before watching full video, probably from my OCD, ha. After watching the video and a little research I believe the room with cracks in the walls is his brain, the pig wheeling him in signifies incompetent doctor or incorrect medicine, the lamps is his neuron misfires. I feel so bad .... we all have spiritual attacks but Ren's brain damage has been an open door at times for Satan to enter. I come to that conclusion from the lights glitching when he is having the negative thoughts and then the lights stay on during times of clarity, peace, and control. The Meaning of Ren in Confucianism
2013-04-19
The core thought of Confucianism is Ren, but what is the meaning of Ren?
Nature of Rén
Rén relies heavily on the relationships between two people, but at the same time encompasses much more than that.
Thank you so much for that! Wow, well our government certainly doesn't adhere to that philosophy!
Well Done Analysis!

🤣 Yeah, I told him I got suggestions to check him out and said he had to as well. I've been told by almost everyone that I HAVE to listen to the trilogy 😉 So that will be my next Ren reaction. 😁👍
@@MrsRealistic after the trilogy you should check out Chalk Outlines. It's a beautiful song.
@@jeremykent3481 Thanks Jeremy!
I hope you get to learn an instrument
Thank you David! I really should get some lessons!
@@MrsRealistic Sure, I agree. Different strokes. But his fans can be a little... Evangelical.
@@13strong I think every artist can have fans like that lol! Come to think of it... look at the crazy fans of the Beatles, or Michael Jackson 😆
@@MrsRealistic Yeah, but in those cases I kind of get the enthusiasm ;)
Best sound?.......A USA guy in Europe....drunk........BUT I'M AMERICAN!!!!.....sorry sir.... you are from the United States of America........not the continent.
I'm not sure I understand your comment
