“Air on the G String”(German: ‘Air auf der G-Saite’) is a piece from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orchestral Suite No.3 in D major. It was arranged by the German violinist August Daniel Ferdinand Victor Wilhelmj in 1871. Wilhelmj adapted the original aria for solo violin, using only the G string of the violin. He added the inscription “auf der G-Saite” (meaning “on the G string”) to the sheet music. While Wilhelmj’s arrangement made the piece more famous, it received mixed reviews from critics. Some felt that it detracted from Bach’s original composition. Nevertheless, the significance of Wilhelmj’s arrangement lies in its ability to be performed with just one violin and piano, making Bach’s work accessible even in a simplified form. Today, “Air on the G String” is often heard in its original version or as Wilhelmj’s arrangement. Whether played on the G string or not, it remains widely recognized by this title.
“G선상의 아리아”(Air on G)는 요한 세바스티안 바흐(Johann Sebastian Bach)의 관현악 모음곡 3번 라장조의 아리아를 1871년에 독일의 바이올리니스트 아우구스트 빌헬미(August Daniel Ferdinand Victor Wilhelmj)가 바이올린의 G현만 사용하여 연주할 수 있도록 편곡한 다음 악보에다가 'auf der G-Saite'라는 글귀를 써 놓았는데, 사람들이 이 편곡 작품을 “G선상의 아리아”라 불렀습니다. 빌헬미의 편곡이 원곡을 더욱 유명하게 한 것은 사실이지만 정작 평단으로부터의 반응은 좋지 못했으며, 바흐의 원곡을 망쳐놓았다는 평도 많았습니다. 그의 편곡이 음악사적으로 가지는 의미는 바흐의 원곡을 바이올린과 피아노 한 대만으로도 연주할 수 있게 되었다는 것 정도입니다. 오늘날 그의 편곡은 잘 연주되지 않으며, 음악 감상 매체가 발달한 오늘날에는 원곡으로 연주, 감상 되는 경우가 더 많습니다. 현재는 연주에 G현만 쓰이든 그렇지 않든, 원곡이든 편곡 작품이든 “G선상의 아리아”가 제목으로 널리 쓰이고 있습니다.
