I enjoy all of your videos. I'm an adult learner. I started self teaching a number of years ago, quit when my adult son passed suddenly. I restarted 1.5 years ago. Using my piano practice to heal. I started seeing piano teaching videos but yours are the best. My opinion only, others say they are teaching but actually doing more showing off than teaching. Paid piano lessons isn't possible as I'm retired living on social security. I appreciate your lessons and directing your lessons to actual beginners. Thank you
Thank you for sharing your story, I am currently learning piano to help maintain my depression and free piano lessons truly are a wonderful. It’s so great we can use UA-cam to learn things and keep hope in our lives
B Major was the scale I learned straight after C Major and it has given me the opinion that C Major isn't the best scale to master first. It offers a lot of foundational understanding for scales and keys in general but from a dexterity standpoint, it's so flat that when you start playing two octaves hands together, you're having to roll your wrists a lot and shift to keep your playing even. I like B Major and other keys because the up and down nature of the scales as they fall along the piano lends itself to more fluid playing early on- at least for me
@@labanlabanssonAgreed. Even if you eventually plan to play a piece in the original key, it’s helpful to practice it in B or E major since this allows you to develop the expected legato feeling. Then when you revert to the original key, you have greater awareness of how the legato passages should sound than if you, say, listened to a recording of someone playing the same piece.
Just want to let you know, I'm a 63 year old man and always wanted to play the piano. I bought a small keyboard by Casio but it has full size keys years ago and just life kept getting in the way. I now have the time and watched a few of your videos and it got me to get it out and set it all up. I'm practicing now all because of you girl. I would love to have a teacher like you. You make me as new to this feel good about it and when I mess up I don't get frustrated with myself. I hear your voice saying it's OK just keep going. Your bubble energy and sweetness is so good to see and hear. we need more of that in this crazy world. By the way when I get a little better and stick with it I'm going to go get an 88 key piano but it will be a reward to me for staying with it. Thank you for getting me started I'm having so much fun other then when my hands get tired. LOL
Great advice! I'd add only one very small thing: sing the scales as you play them, even if you're not a singer, even if you think you look and sound stupid. This is CRUCIAL to connect your hand movements to your (inner) voice, and with the habit, it's so good for your mood! Just give it a shot, you'll thank me down the line.
Oh wow you gave me a good workout tonight. I'm 63 years old and a beginner learner as of this pass Sunday and I really enjoyed these scales. I'm definitely going to get my left hand to cooperate with my right. Love this video ❤. New subscriber here 😂
Practicing scales builds what many call muscle memory (which btw is more like a nerve-thing …). But also it helps you becoming and staying confident and fluent in playing the piano as well as memorizing and focussing on the voicing and tone of each single key. Scales may also assist in understanding the fundamental playground of the chords on the scale.
This is perhaps the most fun way I played scales ever. I am a beginner and after following the beats my hands automatically starting co ordinating. I think the problem was overthinking 😂 while it shd be fun. ❤ U win one more subscriber to ur channel 🎉
Probably the biggest enemy of scales is boredom. I'd suggest the 'netflix technique': put something to watch on your tablet or laptop or screen, and practise scales for the duration. All you have to do is keep going as long as the programme keeps going, rather than fighting your boredom. As an additional benefit, this stops you from wanting to look at your hands while you practise. The major benefit of scales is when they are instinctive and automatic, and this only comes after tonnes of repetition. Likewise arpeggios. Then simple phrases from pieces.
That's a great tip! But the sounds would distract me from my playing. What I sometimes do is put an ebook on my tablet and read it while doing finger excercises because then there's no sound coming from my tablet
@@ajunasoerjadi That would be a problem with anything apart from scales and arpeggios. But for scales you only need to hear if you're playing the right notes, not any more degree of musicality. I have recently been watching Voyager episodes in a VR headset (that you pop an Android phone in) when working on scales (mainly posture and touch) so as to force myself not to look at my hands, and not to let my upper body posture follow my eyesight. It's interesting then practising the piece I'm working on (moonlight mvmt 3) after 42 mins of effectively playing blindfold, as my brain is then very used to ignoring my eyesight and using touch and spatial awareness exclusively. It's amazing how much more attention my brain pays to touch and spatial awareness. But it does take about 40 mins for the effect to happen.
@@simpleffective186 I'm not sure about lazy. Weird, sure. Weird, but effective. And the benefits then infuse the rest of my practice. I'm fine with weird. And doing 30mins of mindful scale practice before working on a piece doesn't strike me as lazy.
I just turned 75. I’ve been singing in musicals since college, during the Johnson administration. Recently I performed in Young Frankenstein where I had this solo that I knocked out of the park people came up to me after a remarked that they didn’t know I was such a good singer. So right then an there I decided to take action. I signed up for voice lessons to improve my singing voice. The dragged a keyboard out of the closet and vowed to teach myself how to play. After looking at several UA-cam sites I found yours. Your smile and simple technique sold me.
Thank you. I'm relearning the keys. This lesson was helpful. I liked that you told us to breathe. Thank you. Glad you're teaching keys, because I've also done one of your singing lessons too. Thank you for bringing more music into the world. Love and Light.
if you practice scales and know the 1,3,5 and sometimes 7 notes of each scale you can play any song in any key especially if you’re playing a song with a vocalist and they’re used to singing a song in a certain key
You are the best teacher in the world. My brain learns and processes things so differently but you definitely give me a better understanding of what I’m practicing. Thank you
I use the major scales as my warm ups. I do 8th notes at 120 bpm and make my way through the Circle of Fifths so I di all 12. I alternate whether i do sharps or flats first. I have a goal of learning my relative minor scales and being able to do those the aame way. I have the CoF printed and hung, so the knowledge is there and the muscle memory will make its way. Ive learned a few of the relative minors, but not all of them yet. Progress. I find doing the scales sets me in the mental frame for practicing and the use of the metronome also helps with my evenness in playing. I've despised the metronome for years as I didnt understand why timing was harder for me than others. Recently I was able to figure out why and the resentment has faded to the point that I dont feel the urge to smash the metronome to smithereens anymore. I never did destroy one, but that frustration was very much there. Anyway, I use scales to get in the mindset to practice as well as bring my musical knowledge to the forefront.
I’d love to see tutorials like this but for other scales. There are some ones that have way weirder fingering with the sharps. I’m getting really good at C major since that’s what all the ‘beginner’ tutorials focus on lol
I have never practiced major or minor scales on bass or guitar, only pentatonics, but on piano, I've realized it's going to help me visualize the shapes of the keys so I can play in keys other than C.
Seriously, you are the best! You bring such joy and personality to every lesson you teach. Absolutely wonderful! I’m enjoying just playing scales! Who da thought?!
First time trying this after years of not really touching a piano much but now I have one at my disposal so want to get back into it and be able to really have fun with it but coming from guitar scales and arpeggios were always nice warm ups but never tried it much on the piano.left wrist kinda hurt but it was a great lesson thanks!
This is SO helpful!!! I've always wanted to play the piano, and I've just started teaching myself using the Schaum Method And Theory Books. Thank you so much for posting this, it's so clear and easy to see and understand, and I also really appreciate the cheerfulness ☺️
Thanks, I have put together sequences, but really I still need to learn the basics way better! I must have played this 50 times today and need to practice it regularly!
