Gold-like material is basically cork and its called "Vermiculite". Can also be used as rock imitation.

Ah! Thanks. I was wondering if that was it. I've seen it used, elsewhere, but it always looked more like nuggets, than like the little plates, as yours does. I will see if my garden center carries it
