Harry was well known and respected here in York. He sadly passed away in 2014 but he was a down to earth Yorkshire man. He left his job after this incident and eventually went to work at the Minster as one of their security team, known as the Minster Police.

Yes one of the most, if not, the most famous York ghost story of modern times.
This, of course, is because Harry himself was evidently a genuinely, honest man who was simply recounting an amazing and mysterious experience which clearly happened.

@@m.asquino7403 I’m not sure. I thought the electrical charge from the drill may have sparked it off, but as it turns out, it wasn’t an electrical drill Harry was using. It was a big hand drill and hammer he used, which is why it took a couple of days to make the hole through the stone.
So, could it t have been the incessant hammering into the stone? Perhaps Harry’s state of mind at the time left him open to witnessing an event that plays over and over again in the cellar. Maybe, the rest of us don’t see it because the mindset of most humans don’t leave them open to it.
In other words, I have no idea what the trigger is. However, I believe Harry Martindale. I don’t believe he is lying. I think what he said happened, happened.
Having visited the Treasurer’s House several times now, I can assure you that every one of the guides who works there also believe it. Not just the Roman ghosts, but the whole house is littered with spectral stories.
There is a singular atmosphere that lingers and tingles in the house, especially that tiny cellar. Fascinating to look around, I certainly recommend a visit. Wouldn’t want to spend the night there on my own however.

Yes. Interesting to think about. I tend to think that his ‘vision’ was more of an ‘action replay’ rather than ghosts.

my father had an old belief that those who can be seen through apparitions and what not are called "arasaas" "a whisper of the past" where you can actually see ghostly apparition doing the same thing over and over again, it is an old belief that those who died left a vibrations through walls or to the ground and manifest through time, he also provided a connection of science to this because they believe that spirits of humans are some form of energy and in physics energy cannot be destroyed it can only transform from one form to another...

His description has a wealth of detail. All kinds of little details. And that may be a problem. Now, if you studied some history books, you might have those details at hand.

He described the entire incident, including the build-up and aftermath, in great detail, including how he fell off the ladder and landed on his backside (ass/posterior), and how after the encounter with the ghosts he later went to a doctor in the Mount area of York to get an off-work letter. The doctor said in the letter that he should be given time off work on the basis of nervous shock caused by seeing apparitions (which the doctor seemed to be very open-minded about).
Mr. Marindale didn't say anything, either in that account or in the other accounts of his which I've read in books, about a head injury. What makes you think that he was "taken to hospital and treated for concussion"?

Maybe they aren’t rare. Just because people don’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there. We cannot see X-rays or radio waves or microwaves which are around us all the time. It’s only under certain conditions, which we as humans have managed to control, that we can experience those waves. Maybe it’s the same with this phenomena. I have no doubt that Harry is relating exactly what he saw. Would those ghosts have passed through the wall regardless of Harry being there or not? It is very difficult to make any assumption because we know so little about such things. However, I have no doubt regarding his honesty.

Raji Raman with all due respect. Sounds nothing like Trevor McDonald. He is in fact, William Woollard, (a blonde Englishman).
He was famous for being a presenter on ‘Tomorrow’s World’ in the 1970s and 1980s.

    Here is my question.
Why does always seem to just be Roman soldiers? Why not Viking invaders, or peasants or anything else?

    • @Callisto74

Adino1 I guess it was Roman soldiers cos it was a Roman Road. Vikings came later.

Sharma Wadey 😆. I’m joking with you. I do know who Trevor is. I’m British too and old enough to remember him. Trouble is, I’m old enough to remember the guy in the above video also. So with that kind of association, I don’t think he sounds anything like the McDonut. However, each to their own.
It is a brilliant video. I actually went to the Treasurers House in York on the strength of this video. Harry’s story is a big deal there. They have a whole room dedicated to him and you can tour the cellar. All of the guides who work there believe it and they have a myriad of other ghost stories to tell if you ask them. Very atmospheric.

Fun, and I love this kind of show. But Martindale describes nothing he couldn't have got from a child's illustration of a Roman soldier, round shields and all. (Anyway, if they had round shields because they'd picked them up from locals, would they all have had the same thing? Nah. Error there!) And of course they were tired-looking and unshaven..! Any one unexpected detail would have made it so much more convincing.

There is a gas which can form around underwater springs which is a hallucinogen. That's all it was.

    • @brontewcat

Rockguitarnow. The problem with your theory is 1. there are no hot springs in the cellar. 2. The level of detail he describes were facts only known to scholars of Ancient Rome at the time. For example he described the swords as being on the right hand side. At the time Hollywood showed the swords being worn on the left and the soldiers wearing plate not leather. He describes the under tunic as being green, when most popular depictions had them as red. There are two many accurate but not well known details for it to have been an hallucination.

    • @Adino1
      @Adino1 4 роки тому +1

It would be hard for a hallucination to show how a Roman solider looked to a T without having never seen one before.
