Not a phone expert but is it safe to say the Nexus 5 is the GOAT of all smartphones?
I bought one ages ago, kept it for 3 years, and it outclassed phones marginally more expensive than it starting at an MSRP of $349 (Which is unbelievable by today's standards). Nowadays if you want top end performance you have to spend $1000 USD :P

Absolutely the greatest. It's outlived my Nexus 5X (bootloop), though the battery's pretty much toast and the micro USB cable is prone to falling out.

I know you were exagerating on the 1000$ price but you can get top performance with a One Plus 5T or a Asus Zenfone 5 that costs half of that

The Nexus 5 was such an interesting concept. It basically kept up with the contemporary flagship phones, and yet did so at nearly half the price. I don't know if we'll ever see such a good value phone again.

I currently have a xiaomi Mi Max 2. I bought it recently for only £165 and it is an outstanding phone for the price. Build quality is excellent, specs are plenty good enough, and software is nice and smooth. There are options, but they take some finding. The big names are raking in the money at this point....

I bought a USED Nexus 5 back in 2014 and my upgrade (LG V30+) is on the way. I spent nearly 4 years with a used Nexus phone and I KNEW it would be a little future-proof but I didn't expect more than 3 years. I'm VERY happy with my decision. Before that, I had a Nexus 4 as well. Incredible series of phones. Too bad Google saw more money in the $800+ range. Oh well.

Reece Webb It's running Marshmallow I think. I know newer phones have faster processors and 4k screens but, it's pointless. I can't think of any reason why someone would need an 8 core CPU and 8GB of RAM on a cell phone. Let's get real; The reason we go out and get the newest Galaxy or iPhone is for social status and bragging rights. Other than that there is no reason to upgrade if you have anything newer than an S3.

It's never left the case it's in, so it's still in almost mint condition, other than a little bit of paint scuffing around the camera lens. Love this thing. I'm not so sure I'd call the Nexus 5 the last competitive value smartphone. The Shamu is a beast and I have a massive 2K screen, stereo speakers, a freaking 3.5mm jack (gasp!) and it performs beautifully even today. Got it for $350 brand new from a friend who got a different phone 3 days after he bought the Nexus.

I've only owned three phone in my life: A blackberry, a Nexus 5, and currently a Pixel 2.
I absolutely loved my Nexus. Got it the month it launched and had it until last month, March 2018. Aside from having to bring a battery or my charger everywhere, I loved it. It did what I wanted it to do, and relatively quickly too. It also took quite some falls and it only had one small scratch that ran along the edge of the screen, so you never really noticed it haha.
    I'll always love that phone,
I also filled its case with McDonald coffee stickers (front and back), so it was kind of a conversation piece as well haha

Somehow you made me severely underrate my own Nexus 5. In the face of all the feature-packed, high-end smartphones today I almost forgot how awesome the Nexus 5 was back in the day and still kinda is today. Definitely money well spent 4 years ago.
I don't think there will ever be another flagship phone as affordable as the Nexus 5. The only phone today that comes close is the Essential Phone, when it's on sale.

I still have mine. Kept it alive with a battery replacement, never broke the screen, been through a lot of custom ROMs, and have a gorilla glass cover. I take it apart every few months and clean out any dust, etc.
This is my Nexus. There are many like it, but this one is mine...

I still have it, and recently gave it to a friend while she waited for repairs. Besides a bit of performance hiccups and battery life she was quite satisfied. The camera always seemed great to me, although it got dwarfed quite fast by better devices, the HDR+ advantage was there from day one and that made all the difference.

I have an iPhone X and I just saw this video on my 4 year old Nexus 5! I dropped this phone... Had to replace the screen on dropping... The power button does wierd things once in a while... The battery drains out pretty fast and YET my heart is deeply connected to this device! This is the GOAT of phones!

Leave it to HardwareCanucks to make a video in 2018 about one of my favorite smartphones! I typically recycle or resell my old tech (don't like things to just gather dust or go unused) but the OG Nexus 5 is one of the few pieces of hardware I've kept for sheer sentimental value. This was my daily driver for three years and possibly would've gone longer had it not faced the dreaded LG Boot Loop power button issue, which could only be truly fixed with soldering a new power button. RIP Nexus 5, and thank you Eber and HC for the tribute and nostalgia with this phone in this episode!

Watching this on my Nexus 5 that I just can't seem to get rid of. It works too well, was a gift, and I'm used to it. That being said, the battery life is down about 20% since new, and compared to my wife's Pixel 2 it's slightly laggy. I'm eyeing the Pixel 3 but even when it's out, my N5.. it still works so well, I know it'll be a tough call (pun obsolescent?) to upgrade. My pragmatism and sentimentality may win out, unless someone "helps" me by dropping it on concrete. Thanks for the review.

Wikus Van De Merwe i know how you feel. I loved and still love my nexus 5. What made me chose a oneplus 5t was mainly the screen, bezeless design, beast hardware capabilities, awesome battery life and the near identical look of both.
The oneplus 5t was the worthy upgrade i waited so long for.
Truth be told, i still miss the nexus 5 and it will still be one of the best, if not, the best smartphone i owned..

I love my Nexus 5 and is my daily driver, looking for the money to repair it and keep going... Thanks for the Video.

I'm still using Nexus 5 for five years and I use it a lot every day. The only things I have to do is to hard reset like every 6 month and change the battery when it's health is low and bualá! Won't change it until I see new phones trully do things that mine can't. (Ok, now a big progress on camera is happening but I can bear that!)

  • @superscope9629

Not running a Nexus 5, but I *am* running a Droid Turbo! It came out on around the same day a year after the Nexus 5 and still holds up very well; the battery especially still blows most expectations since it's still larger than most batteries in an Android on the market today. While the most recent version of some more intensive apps like SnapChat run relatively poorly, the OLED display, front-facing speaker, and durability still hold up better than many of the brand-new phones I've had my hands on. Certainly going to miss using this thing daily when it (if it ever) kicks the bucket.

In a few months it'll be 4 years that I'm using my Nexus 5! It still holds up pretty well in terms of performance, although it's not as snappy as when I first bought it (but that's to be expected of course).
I wouldn't consider getting another phone if the battery wasn't sooooo bad and the power button was still 100% working.
I resorted to a custom ROM just to avoid using the power button as it'd cause the phone to bootloop. I've been so satisfied with the pure Android experience Google offers that I'd like to buy a Pixel phone but they're so expensive!

Believe it or not, still using this beast (at that time) in 2018, bought it after a month of release (Nov, 2013). Had no major problem at all, but now it's getting slower (which it should be).
    - In this lifetime it only hanged total 4 times.
    - Camera software had some problem, resetting camera apps and a restart fixes all.
    - Battery still lasts near about a day, (used to lasts 1.5 day)

As a long time Nexus 5 owner, there are a couple points missed in this video.
At the time of release, the CPU was the fastest available, surpassing even the S4, which came out later.
Also all of the Nexus had to be replaced due to power button failure. It was such a common failure that all of my friends which had one mentioned to me, the Facebook group I am has hundreds of posts on that topic and I myself had to get my Nexus replaced by Google for this.
I still have one, but with the Tesla custom 7.1.2 rom, custom recovery and kernel and, if you have a power bank, still holds well as a daily driver

Still rocking my Nexus 5, 32 GB edition. Had to fix the power button a few months ago, but still in love with device. Considered the Essential PH1 as a replacement, but heard too many disappointments from folks I know who got one.
As mentioned in the video, I carry a power brick, and can fully recharge the phone 3 times with it. But, I’m not a screen addicted, it mainly plays audio to Bluetooth speakers.
, and regular smartphone communication apps.

Such an amazing phone. I was using my Nexus 5 up until last week. Battery life was suffering (although not that bad), performance was still amazing even though there was the occasional sluggishness but the biggest issue was the power button. Occasionally it got stuck and constantly reset over and over. Was easy enough to get around, but it was finally time to upgrade.

I love the detail. All the skuffs etc. give the phone personality & a story. I like the thought of it being seriously used (heavily) every single day until it's been put out of work now. Just imagine all the business that this thing has been used for/gone through & how it's been treated. It's just such a raw form of life when you look at used phones that have never been in cases. idk

I've had the HTC Evo 4G, Nexus 4, 5, now Pixel XL. Of the four, my favorite is definitely the 5. Comfortable to hold and use for a phone, the software was smooth & snappy, simple yet high value for it's price. It had everything needed.
