If you want to learn more about how Inkscape works, I have a 50+ part video series where I explain all of the tools and features in Inkscape and demonstrate how they work. Here's the link if interested: logosbynick.com/inkscape/
I've never commented on a video before, but Nick's tutorial is too fantastic to not say something. I had never used Inkscape before, so I jumped right into this tutorial without looking up any of the basics. At first, I was a bit dubious because the current version of Inkscape has changed some since this tutorial--didn't matter! This tutorial is so well done that I was still able to easily & quickly figure everything out. I am rather amazed that I could actually create an identical fish. This is likely the best tutorial I've encountered. 10/10. Can't wait to play around with all of these new skills!
Definitely check out the rest of his channel👍 He's my nr. 01 go to guy for Inkscape on UA-cam. I believe the version he's using here is 0.92.4. It only came in this colour and icon set. The first version I used😊 Logos By Nick later created (under correction) an add-on to change it to dark with a modern icon set👌 When version 1.0 rolled out, it came as standard, with choices👍 Best bit about Inkscape is that it's FOSS, Free and Open Source. Development relies on donations and such. All the best with the new skills
You've got probably one of the best tutorials here on youtube. Thank you so much... I'm learning a lot... and I'm totally recommending it to my friends who want to learn inkscape..
You have no idea how incredibly helpful this tutorial was for me, thank you for being direct and easy to follow, my friend's baby shower is gonna look great now!
You are super cool inkscape tutor...I seriously love this channel.!! All inkscape videos on my channel are made after learning inkscape from you..Thanks alot !!!!!!!
Your tutorials are AWESOME!!!! Thank you for sharing this online. it has been very helpful in designing basic stuff at work - logo and illustrations, designs for training materials and some adverts for upcoming events. Keep up the good work!
Great video! It is the first one I have seen of yours. You can make that sharp point before the tail by adding a corner node either by double clicking on the green line and selecting corner node or selecting both end nodes and hit the add a node then corner node. I look forward to watching the rest of your tutorials.
+Blinker Please Thanks for the tip. Haven't tried it yet, but that sounds logically sound. Enjoy the videos. Let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like to see made.
Nick your tutorials are amazing. I own a Cameo vinyl cutter and one of the things I wanted to do is break out from tracing images to creating my own. I did not know Inkscape has this ability to warp text. I am so excited as the options are endless.
+Imran Nazir Thank you. Inkscape is a dark horse. It can realistically be compared to Illustrator, yet not many people know about it or give it more than a passing glance.
@@LogosByNick LOL so I am 5 years late, where is the updated video if there is one showing the sharp corner? One other question, I dont have path effect editor on my inkscape, is there a video on how to get that? Thanks and great videos.
Wow you rescure me from spending money on expensive software. Inkscape has everything i need, i just didn't know. Thank you so much for this nice tutorial.
thank you man :) The best you did here is to hover over the icons so the shortcut pops up In the newer version of inkscape everything looks different But with the shortcuts you can follow along
loved this tutorial, only problem is since it's been a few years. the program is outdated, and couldn't find some features. had to google them to find them, but also the side doesn't pup up when I select path editor- envelope deformation on the object . only lets me select the word. please help. Or make another video more updated on the program-Inkscape. Thanks Nick
10 out of 10! love everything in this channel, especially your voice XD...i learnt all skills of inkscape from here and now i use all those skills to design all my e-learning courses graphics. it is amazing that i can design some professional vectors without using expensive AI! thank you so much! lookiong forward to seeing new videos! keep going!
Thank you! I couldn't figure out how to open the drop down in the Path Effect Editor until I saw in your video you have to first change the object to a path.
When you select the text and then edit the top bend path in the path efects editor you can create more nodes in your bath so you could have bend the text around the tail and body like your object is.
my second inkscape creation! (the first was how to change clipart to svg for a cutting machine). Right at the last step where you say to make the text "object to path" and a popup box happened- that did not for me. I opened it using the keyboard commands- finely made out from your screen. and I did not have any of the same options. when I started playing around with the letters, instead of making the whole set change- like yours, it made me change each letter and all the millions of nodes too. actually came out awesomely. but couldn't figure out why that was happening. Great vid. nice and clear. wish I could post a pic of my fish. daring to do the cup next.
Thanks for the tutorial - I am just learning and you made this process very understandable - Is there a way to add a long phrase or poem to a shape, say a pumpkin, Christmas tree, large heart. then delete the shape so just the text is in the shape of the object?
Please correct me if I'm wrong here!! I think just like Nick said, you would have to do it mostly manually but und some paths you could use "Text -> Put on Path" , not everywhere and not on the whole shape but on couple of sections and then put them together the way you want them.
When adding multiple lines of text to an object, is there any easy way to have it conform to the object shape without doing separate lines/layers? I’m putting lyrics inside a heart shape and not having luck.
Excellent video, never seen that done before, I will be having a go at that. Thank you...?........ Could you do one one manipulating a image ?. I have a sailboat that my daughter wants done in 3 colours of vinyl, I tried many ways to break apart the image so I can layer each section but not found the right way yet 😔
thanks for the video Nick you are awesome, the fonts from the link above they said free for commercial use. For example can I use them on a logo or any design and should be ok if I sell it?
Thanks man, this has been really useful! and I also see you're using Linux which is neat because I also run Ubuntu on my laptop, almost everyone uses Windows instead
Absolutely! I use those two for 99% of my work. It would only be ideal for freelance work though. Every agency/employer wants their designers to know the Adobe software.
I am just still learning Inkscape enough to get semi-comfortable with it. So wouldn't this work also for putting text in an arched shape? Because I keep missing something in that tutorial and can never get the arched text tutorial to work for me.
Thank you for your tutorials, its clear and too the point. I am stuck on this one now, where you "Align bottom edges of objects to the top edge of the anchor" my objects remain the same and goes up to the edge of the paper :( - i have watched this over and over and i cant figure out whats the issue...... very frustrating
Wow, I would never have guessed you have to do all that to just get the fish! That's where I'm struggling--seeing things in other shapes and overlapping, differences, rotates, union. It's too bad there isn't a way to get a pointed oval shape as it seems to be used a lot.
I really like your video. Unfortunately I have .91 and could not find the path effects editor only path effect. I may find it eventually. I have been able to follow some of your others.
do you have to use that exact font, is there a way to do it with a different kind of font and make the text curve to the shape of a ribbon you already have?
Hello Nick, First of all, thank you so much for such an amazing and easy tutorials. I have two questions, 1) How to install "ChunkFive" font, So it can appear in inkscape? 2) Why the fish design is not chrisp and sharp when I export it as png? I have noticed the same result in my other inkscape drawing, they are always blurry in end specially eclipse designs. Can you please, pretty please tell me , what am I doing wrong? P.S. I use Windows 10 and inkscape 0.92.2 version.
Thankyou for the awesome tutorial! I have been trying to do a simple cropping to remove an inner section of a jpeg image by drawing a circle within the image. But somehow, I just can't get it to work. Cropping from outside is ok but never works for cropping from within the image. Could you give some advice on this?
i have cropped it by creating an ring shaped object that is a difference between the outer path and inner path. Once i have the right shape in one object, i use that to clip the image and it works! Before that, when i combine the 2 paths and clipped the image, it only cropped the outer side of the image instead of the inner section.
I think I may have a older version of InkScape as mine looks nothing like yours. I followed your instructions all the way up to the Envelope Deformation & I'm not seeing that anywhere on my screen. Any way that you can help me?!
+GLASS BLOCK LIGHT DESIGNS It can be done, but it would probably be a little more difficult. You may have to use a different technique (possibly drawing it freehand.) Unlike Illustrator, Inkscape doesn't have a tool that lets you morph wording into a shape.

SO MUCH VALUABLE VIDEO!
hi sir, just a beginner....can u wrap the text in shape of a human face(probably name) by using the same concept...???
Great tutorial. Thank you!
I think I may have a older version of InkScape as mine looks nothing like yours. I followed your instructions all the way up to the Envelope Deformation & I'm not seeing that anywhere on my screen. Any way that you can help me?!
Which version are you using? You'll want to have at least 0.48 installed.
It should be possible to make a sharp corner by adding an extra node on the path, make it a corner node (see menu) and get it right on the corner.
Hey Nick. Do you know if it is possible to create this text warp effect in Affinity Designer?
No unfortunately this is one of AD's downsides. If they could implement envelope deformations then it would be a game changer.
@@LogosByNick Thank you, I strongly agree.
If i wanted to use an image from google like a heart shape would i a be able to get the same effect as what you did with the fish ?

How am I able to do this with other shapes? Like a heart? Star? Or a pumpkin?
