  • Here I show How I modify a Vox V847 Wah Pedal for true Bypass to prevent the pedal from affecting your tone when it is not engaged.
    This is the second Vox V847 I have performed this mod on with great success.
    Wah Wah pedals traditionally renowned for dulling off your tone when disengaged.
    This mod rectifies that problem.
    Hope you find this video helpful.
    All the best,
    Paul.

    Thank you for this tutorial Paul !! It worked perfectly on a VOX 845. I used a 2PDT switch.

    Thank you. Excellent mod. I’m using my way with a keyboard, and only using it on the clav sounds. The rest of the time it has to be super-quiet. The mod worked well, but there was still a bit of residual noise. I found that if I ran a wire from the ground of the output plug to the case, the noise was considerably less. I also found that a DPDT switch works well, and is a lot easier to get hold of in a hurry. Thanks again.

    my V845 might have some colors mixed up, my brown wire goes from input to the switch, and the green one goes from input to board, am I correct to just do green when you say brown and vice versa?

    i really appreciate this video man! really walked me through installing my 3pdt!
    By any chance did you ever install an LED to indicate whether it's in use or not? And if so, did you install a DC adapter? I'm trying to figure out how I can get power from the 9v supply to the LED without having to install a DC (as I have a battery clip from my power brick)- no videos or anything about this has been posted anywhere to my knowledge... perhaps you could shed some light on this...
    thanks in advance!

    Hi, thx for the vid. A cpuple of questions...
    1. Is the procedure the same for the Vox 845?
    2. Would a DPDT switch do the job equally well?
    thx.

    • @PaulGrahamGuitarst
      @PaulGrahamGuitarst  7 років тому

      1. The 845 is similar in that it is only battery operated and the input output wiring are very much the same.
      I can't say that the wiring is color coded the same but with care and attention it should be possible to convert to true bypass.
      2. A DPDT switch will work fine. No provision to add LED indicator later though.

    Man, I need help. I have a vintage v847, it was made in 1995. It used to work very well, I changed the pot once, it was the only problem that it showed. One beautiful it just stoped working. It's original, no mods. What is happening is, the signal from guitar is passing but no wah effect is playing. The main point is, it's not true bypass but the signal is passing without a power supply. Do have any idea?

  • @DenisMorissetteJFK
    @DenisMorissetteJFK Рік тому

    I think I did like you did here. The Wah effect is there. However, the white cable on the input jack must be not connected... Also, either the battery is connected or not, the non-processed guitar sound is not there. I checked with a multimeter that the the connector on the input and output jacks are communicating. Thanks.

    Hi Paul, on your video 3 you show how to add an LED but I do not have the board configuration you have on that video. I have the type that is in this video. I don't have the diode or at least that configuration. Where would I connect the LED on the version of board you are doing this demo on? Cheers

    • @PaulGrahamGuitarst
      @PaulGrahamGuitarst  7 років тому

      What you need to do is identify where the positive (red) and negative (black) wires connect to the circuit board through the white connector. You can solder your power wires to those two pads and switch the the power to the LED on either the negative or positive wire using the spare pole on the TPDT switch.
      Better still, if you connect the positive for the LED to the tab on the input jack that has the white wire going to the board it will be switched off when there is nothing connected via the input jack.

    Hi Paul. Great instructional video. I think I followed the instructions. I have awesome wah-wah, but dead on the by-pass. It's a V847A. Does that affect the wiring logic? I have a pic of the finished mod if that would help.The internal configuration of my V847A and your V847 do look slightly different. Plus yours is made in USA and mine is made in China. Thanks.

    Hey Paulie,
    I've done this mod to my VoxV847 wah and now there's a buzz.
    On or off there's a buzz.
    I checked the wiring and I used a multi-meter to ensure I have continuity the way your circuit is designed.
    any idea what could be causing it?
    I have this pedal for about 18 years now.

    • @joejoeghetto
      @joejoeghetto 2 роки тому

      I’m sure it’s got an interrupted ground. I’m putting a external switch on the out side of the pedal to disconnect it while I’m not using an can still leave it plugged in. Anything else I don’t think would work without problems like ur talking about or a loud click so. Just a switch on the outside. I have two of these pedals. They sound way good. Better than the others. Much better wah

    Hi and thanks for the video! What kind of wire should I use for this? I mean the white wire that you replace and use at the end to make the true bypass. Thank you.

    • @PaulGrahamGuitarst

      +aquariummachete What I actually used was single wires from 4 core security cable.
      Its around 20 Gauge, multi strand copper.

    Can you link me or tell me the kind of rubber feet you have on the bottom there? My boyfriend bought his used but it only came with 3 and all I'm seeing online look like a different shape than the ones his came with. I was hoping to get him some as a small Christmas gift!

      I am not sure where you will find genuine VOX Wah pedal feet.
      The Jim Dunlop version will work ok and they are on ebay.
      If you really want VOX I would go to your local music store and ask them.
      Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

      No problem - I'll check Guitar Center, that's the closest to me. I did see those Dunlop ones, they're cheap so I might get those anyway and hope they fit!

    Are you using wire cutters to strip the insulation?

    • @PaulGrahamGuitarst
      @PaulGrahamGuitarst  9 років тому +1

      Yes I am.
      I am using side cutters.
      I know you can buy wire strippers and I have often had the opportunity to use them on jobs but out of habit I just use cutters. Bad habit I know.

    • @kmg1434
      @kmg1434 10 років тому

      I believe it would be exactly the same, since the only difference for the v847a model is the 9v power jack, and this modification ignores the power part of the circuit

    • @PaulGrahamGuitarst

      If the input and output jacks are not soldered into the circuit board it would be very similar to mod.

    • @PaulGrahamGuitarst

      For some reason suppliers are reluctant to indicate a manufacturer. But the switch is known as a TPDT (Triple Pole Double Throw) Foot Switch.
      On Ebay or Amazon a search for "True Bypass Foot Switch" and you will have dozens to choose from. The RoHs ones are quality controlled and I recommend going for one of those.
