@@Zxcas people have been hacking 60 frames per second on RPCS3 for many Tales games. They did it for free just for the fun of it. Surely professional developers could *try* to do the same for Symphonia to at least show they spent more than two big macs worth of money for a proper re-release of a game? Just like, you know, they changed resolution in a game which code is apparently lost LMAO.
My very first Tales of game that got me into the Tales series. I’m pretty disappointed Namco Bandai didn’t put effort to actually “remaster” it properly. It deserves more improvement. Maybe I’ll buy it when they add the part 2…
I really liked the way you presented this. Great job on the breakdown and comparisons, to the various versions. Really learned a lot and helped me make an informed decision on what I am getting.
If you need a single game to last you months with ridiculous amounts of content to grind out and have the patience to stick out 2 or 3 playthroughs. Then go for it. Myself I've played it on GC and steam already. I couldn't put myself through genis' red light green light again.
Damn straight I'm getting this game when it releases! I wish there was a pre-order for it in the eShop so I don't have to wait for it to download when it releases.
This is just my opinion, but I’ll just buy the PS3 version. The prices $20 less than the remaster and it comes with its sequel. I’m new to the Tales of series and I have been curious to try out one of the games, so I figured why not try Symphonia. 🤷🏽♂️
It's worth it if you've never played it, perhaps the best jrpg ever made, if you already got a version of the game you can play you won't get much out of it.
I'm still on the fence, I replayed the GameCube version in 2020, so pretty recently all things considered. I do wish they put more effort into this remaster... I probably will purchase it at some point, but not right away. I'd imagine it will go on sale at some point and I'll probably grab it then
I am struggeling with the decision on which version I should buy. It will be either the cronicles version for ps3 or the new remastered one. What do you guys suggest me to buy?
Honestly considering the glitches and weird stuff that's been going on since release, I'd say ps3 if you can find it. I know that contradicts my opinion in my own video, but they really need to release a bug fix patch for Switch pronto
The thing is to me it's not even the 30fps that bothered me the most in the PS3 version. I got used to that eventually after a few hours. It was the music resetting after every battle (which doesn't happen in the GC original) which got really obnoxious and i'm curious to see if the issue is actually gonna be discussed this time as the PS4 versions of FF7, 9 and 10 got some huge flak for having the same issue which got fixed in the end. Like once you notice it it's hard not to and it gets really egregious in dungeons with slow/build up beginning track like the final dungeon. I know the framerate is hard to fix due to framerate being tied to logic in the PS2 version but surely it should be possible for the music not to loop after every battle right?
@@woerthman987 They have a chance to fix this. They changed Mystic Arte Portraits and added some english lines for new attacks in the PS3 version so theoretically they can change things up unless it's about the framerate which i can understand though i wish they would've used the GC version as a basis and then re-added the new PS2 content. That way the general backlash would be way less harsh (especially from PS5 owners i imagine) AND we wouldn't have to deal with the music resetting bug to begin with. At least i hope more people will notice it this time as i find it weird to find nothing about it in regards to the PS3 version given how notorious the PS4 versions of many Final Fantasy Remasters were. Which is also the reason i talk about this in ToS Remastered related videos so sorry about that haha
Well that was interesting! Personally I got the steam version already, which was gifted when I preordered Tales of Zestiria. The only system (aside the PC) that I have at home is a Switch so, I don't think I'll buy it, unless I want to have a portable experience.
Getting this on switch because of nostalgia and also the switch has become the go to for my rpg's. I'm actually pretty excited to play it again since the last time I played it was like 2012ish.
the 30fps is not inexplicable. The ps3 port is based off the japan only ps2 port which came after the gamecube release. It was set to 30fps due to the ps2's limitations (load times were also longer on the ps2 version)
@@GiordanDiodato shiit. its amazing that they still havent figure it out how to make it 60 after all these years after GC Version. you would think that they have the best technology as of today but nooo.
I am getting this. Most likely on the PS4 though I can do all 3. My goal is to support because I am a Tales fan. And I want them to remaster all of the older titles. Especially Abyss, Destiny Remake and Rebirth.
Yes because I played this game with one of my mom’s kids and since he introduced me to the game I love it and I been wishing that I had a game cube. Now I got my chance :)
I Can tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps, and I'm sure most people can, but it takes actually paying attention to notice. and anything above 60 FPS is almost impossible to notice a difference. people obsessing over fps rates above 60 are complete idiots.
There's a chance but I feel like any of the original voice cast would have mentioned doing that on social media or something, and there's no indication that's happened
I originally played these games on GameCube (TOS) and Wii (DotNW). I bought the PS3 version later down the line to revisit these games. The drop of frame rate was very noticeable for me because this is an action RPG. I couldn’t enjoy it as I did when it was on GC. As for the sequel, you can only get through it if you are very immersed into this RPG. Instead of party members outside of the two main characters, you have to use and level up monsters to play alongside you, which is frustrating because you cant control those monsters. 😢
I bought this on Gamecube, never beat it. I then bought this on Ps3, never beat it, Going to buy it a 3rd time for ps4. Looking forward to not being it again!
Gawwd i can not wait for this to release! Tale of symphonia is by far one of my top 10 fav RPGs of all time and my number 1 game cube game! Love this game so much from the combat to the story it is all perfect!! Wish there was more to it but hey ill take it especially on the go!!
I only got to play this last year. But even so, I'd say this deserved a remake at the level of what FF7 had, even with the story remaining the same beat by beat but with the overall engine and graphics being similar to what Arise, or at least Berseria had. Remaster is nice but, it don't quite look different from the one I got from Steam for $3 only.
I feel like Symphonia has too much of a cartoony vibe to translate into next generation graphics like ff7 remake. Who knows though, maybe it could work
For that still keep it as the Destiny II name for the PS1 version as a remaster/port and for the REAL tales of destiny sequel have it as Destiny 2 IF it gets a PS4 PS5 Switch port. Then again Eternia KEPT its name when it got a EUROPEAN PSP port of the PS1 version.
@@veghesther3204 European laws about copyright are different from America's. Mattel is a multibillion dollar company so I don't blame Namco for changing the name.
Yes you should buy, I bought ps4 and it's great, looks much better then os3 version did, plays same as os3, maybe better, only issue is the audio in places cause of source they used for the remastered audio, but thatsnot really that bad honestly
Hello again Stewart! The Remaster is 1080p whereas the PS3 version is 720p. The Ps3 version includes the sequel and the Remaster doesn't. As far as I can tell, those are the two primary differences :)
I WAS very excited. but knowing I basically have the 4k capable version of this on my computer ALREADY is disappointing... might go pick up a ps3 copy though, for dawn of a new world.
Yeah, I get that. Just depends on your needs I guess. I just finished playing it on Dolphin but may still pick up the Remaster so I'll have portability to play it again.
I've already bought this game twice: Original release and the collector's edition for the PS3 a decade later. Now I'm kinda hesitant to buy this game for the 3rd time.
ive seen many of the tales games but never got into them because i really didnt like the combat. zesteria was the first i REALLY enjoyed. played bers and arise aswell. but im always looking back at those older ones...
I think you left out the new changes to the remastered, which is some visual changes besides resolution. The ps3 version had additional costrumes that won't on the ps2 version.
As a huge Symphonia fan since the GC days, even though this is definitely a cash grab, take my money Bandai Namco.. to have it on modern consoles is good enough for me
Make fun of people that own a PS3? Wow lol. You're not a true gamer. I have every Playstation hooked up to my TV. I would actually make fun of you for NOT having it and using it as a doorstop
I'll always love Playstation, but the PS3 was like the awkward teen years full of voice cracking and acne. I'd say all the good PS3 games worth playing got remastered on the PS4 anyways
The price is a huge red flag to me. Back then I bought the PS3 version (Tales of Symphonia Chronicles) for only 10$. This version have Tales of Symphonia 1 + the "sequel". Now Bandai Namco want me to pay 55$ CAD only for Tales of Symphonia 1 ? No thanks lol. I expect to have also Dawn of the New World for this price. I mean, if it was a remaster of Tales of the Abyss, then maybe I would have bought it. But nope, it's again Symphonia. Symphonia is really good (it's the FF7 of the Tales of), but there is a lot of other Tales of games who deserve better (Abyss, Graces F, Xillia 1&2, Legendia, etc). 😁
Technically the upgrade from the PS3 version is the 1080p > 720p. But at the cost of not having the sequel game, and at full price, it's a hard ask for sure. I would love to see a 4k Tales of Vesperia personally
I own the gc version and chronicles on ps3. I'm not sure if i should buy this one... the only thing that makes me consider this version, is the possibility to play it in handheld mode on switch...
I was a die hard Cube owner and even defended Lost Kingdoms 1 and 2 from the haters. One of From Software's best titles. Symphonia? It bored the hell out of me. And I tried. I really tried. I wish I knew why. I am a huge fan of Tales of Eternia. I feel like it perfected sprite art and perfected the music too. The cel shaded graphics just turned me off...
Well it is a super long game, and if you don't like the art style I can see not wanting to finish it. I liked Eternia alot too, but Symphonia really got the gameplay down. It's a fun game and gets better in the second act
Will cost less than the physical copy of the original game ? I doubt that on the switch at least, considering the tales of vesperia remake on there is still full price to this day and its nintendo we are talking about.
Yeah but all I learned is about technical stuff and "this game is great" + the premise By the title I just thought there would be more to it. E.g. about the world, the characters, the fighting system. Instead 5/6 is about resolution and fps. This video is probably awesome to those who couldnt decide which version they should pick. But not for those who are interested in the game itself and if they should buy it at all. So now that I think about it my comment should have been "The video didnt answer the titles qustion for me" But whatever I know there are other sources that I can give a try 👌🏻👍🏻
The PS2 version being 30 fps only was the heart of the problem for every remastered version based on it. It is probably too hard to code this version of the game to run at 60 fps since even the modding community wasn't able to do it on the Steam version, so Bandai Namco just gave up as well. I believe the best solution for a definitive edition would be to add the PS2 extra content + the PS3 new content on the GameCube version and then remaster the GameCube version. But I don't think Bandai Namco is interested in this extra effort.
the gamecube versions 60 fps but the ps3 version is based on the ps2 version of symphonia with more content which has a lot more technical issues because the game was rebuilt from the ground up. The only thing that peeve's me is the lack of dawn of the new world
Personally I disagree. Plus think about it like this. The original price for the game cost 10 dollars more than this and came with two games. Honestly with nothing special redone about this release outside the removal of the game, I don't see it being really worth the price since you're really just paying for a lazy port. The textures could be a lot better for this release
Some information for the Steam version : Its internal rendering resolution was at launch at 720p. (Locked) In an update, that added some element from a mod called tsfix, it was bumped to 1080p. (Also locked) Regardless, whenever the two most popular mods were used, they didn't "upscale" the resolution, they replaced the internal rendering resolution to one that could match an user's monitor native resolution, up to 4k. Or any chosen resolution in the supported ranged. Gedosato allowed to render at a higher resolution and downsample it to an user monitor's native resolution. Among other things. Tsfix went a slightly different road that aimed to change the game internal resolution, add some basics PC game settings features, and added texture injection. Tsfix dev also experimented on the game framerate and noticed the animations were tied to the framerate, making a bump to 60fps would break the game, and figuring a way to be on par with the NGC version would be too much time consuming. He did manage to enable 60fps on the world map if I remember correctly. Also, he mentioned that the NGC version of Symphonia wasn't actually constantly at 60fps, combat was, but not the world map. And by the way, for its first year, Symphonia on PC had Denuvo. Sweet uh ? The NGC version : The PAL edition is 50Hz, it sits weirdly between the PS3/Steam version and the US/JP version. It's slower, but also smoother than the PS3/Steam version. Let me tell you that all my timings acquired back in the days on PAL50 were all over the place on the PS3 and Steam release. (A bit better now) But it's still my preferred version to play to this day. 1 - We don't have this horrible font the US version is plagued with. 2 - The Gamecube controller and the fact that the right stick is used for artes. Since the PS2 version, R2-L2 are what's used. Because, reasons ? 3 - It may be in a lower resolution overall, but it's using some rendering technics and post processing effects that disappeared on the PS2 version. And since the PS2 version is the blueprint of every HD remaster and so on, versions being realised today, they inherit of these changes. 4 - No missing texts in the Presea / Alice last cutscene. Butchered on Steam, and perhaps on PS3 (didn't go that far). I may be mistaken, but I remember that other scenes had this issue. 5 - We can't play on the original 4:3 aspect ratio. It's locked on 16:9. And it's not a good 16:9, it's cropped from 4:3. Meaning that we lose quite a lot of visibility. --- Anyway, I'm still an idiot and ordered it on Switch.
I am a long ToS fan, since the day of it's release. I actually finished it 13 times throught my teenage years, loving it so much i wanted all costumes and "affection" interactions. I was the happiest when they anounced a sequel. Today, I act like this sequel never existed. It's so bad it hurts...
It doesn’t really feel like a tails of series game in my opinion. Characters don’t feel like themselves in the game. If it was not for names and locations being used it could be a completely different game.
3:35 49$ is what you call stupidly expensive for a retro game ? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Wait to see Paper Mario, Zelda four Swords, Baten Kaitos or Kirby Air Ride prices.
Truthfully I wrote the script and then was surprised to see the price wasn't too bad. I tried getting Skies of Arcadia for my retrospective a few months ago and it was over $200 at the time 🫠
Calling this a remaster is borderline false advertising. Less content, less frame rate, less resolution, few to no updated textures as far as I can tell, just a few character outlines. Double the price of Steam version for less resolution, just so you can have some more plastic at home? But you know fanboys & girls are going to reward lazy developers anyways and we'll continue to get bad ports like this for years to come
I heard they lost the code for the 60 fps GameCube version which is why its always in 30 never got to play tales of semphonia or alot of rpgs for that matter since i had really strict Christian parents but they've clamed down and im an adult so excited to ply this for the first time

When you can play a superior version and it's emulating a near 20 year old system you really can't justify paying full price for this. I've only recently tried the 60FPS version as while I own an original GCN version (And I'm still playing it btw: ua-cam.com/video/g2UIMt89aGg/v-deo.html) it's an Australian version which runs at 25FPS (Though somehow still feels smoother than the 30fps steam version) Had this version been 60FPS I would have bought it instantly but as it stands, I'll only buy it if it goes deep discount some time in the distant future. Just play the thing on Dolphin, the extra content is mostly fluff anyway.
@@GiordanDiodato Then remake it. They're charging full price for a decades old game. Hell, a lot of the characters and systems could use a little tweaking.
honestly, I find it pointless given that it's on PC and can be played on a potato. but... if you don't have a good enough PC or just rather play on console or a handheld, I suppose it's fine. I won't get it, but that won't stop others from getting it. It feels like a slap to the face for people who wanted games like Tales of Destiny DC outside Japan, especially when the original Tales of Destiny turns 25 this year. Heck, Tales of Destiny 2 (the actual one on PS2, not the fake NA PS1 game) just turned 20 a week ago. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to announce a remaster of both games, but I guess the NA fandom just likes riding Tales of Symphonia's schlong too much. Ah well.
@@WesDoesGames I know, but still, it'd give us a chance to play not only Destiny Director's Cut, but also Destiny 2 (the actual one) since neither game was ever localized.

@@WesDoesGames yeah. With that said tho, I'm still gonna buy that chosen edition physical copy. I love the series that much. Plus, I recently bought and started playing the pc version. I don’t plan on buying this again. I’ve played through the game WAY too many times. I like steak achievements so I’ll just stick to that for future playthroughs. The only way I’d buy it is if I want my kids to play. They have a shared switch so that could be a reason. But they’re just too young for this game at the moment.
You are kidding right? The gameplay is 60 and feels very smooth compared to 30,. Switch between this and the pc port and btw I used a wii. It outputs 60 in combat and towns/dungeons and 30 fps in the overworld. I could've forgive 30 overworld for just 60 fps in combat but there is a clear difference. This is ok for people only on switch and do not have the game but it is a lazy port.

Oh wow, I had no idea it did that in the non GC version. That would get annoying pretty quick. Yeah, hopefully the Remaster fixes that
Damn why did you Tell me about that 😢😨 Wish i would have stopped procrastinating for once so that my brain didn't have to know this terrible thing
@@woerthman987
They have a chance to fix this.
I never played the original but because I like playing JRPGS on the Nintendo Switch and I liked the Trailer I’m planning on getting it.

Getting this on switch because of nostalgia and also the switch has become the go to for my rpg's. I'm actually pretty excited to play it again since the last time I played it was like 2012ish.
There's definitely a lot of good rpgs on there. I've had the final fantasy remasters in my queue to play next
I have never in my life seen someone call it "180p", how are you even doing that?
It's 2023 I don't know how you're possibly calling it 180p.

I might get the remaster if it gets a half off sale, but for now, my gamecube copy still works fine.
Same here. I was really excited about the game originally but after it released with all those issues, I'm inclined to wait for a sale
Should You Buy Tales of Symphonia Remastered? NOP. Namco must fix the game first, for today actually it's a cash grab game.
the 30fps is not inexplicable. The ps3 port is based off the japan only ps2 port which came after the gamecube release. It was set to 30fps due to the ps2's limitations (load times were also longer on the ps2 version)
they tried to get it running at 60, but it broke the physics

When will tales of symphonia dawn of the new world ever be released for steam and others?
I am getting this. Most likely on the PS4 though I can do all 3. My goal is to support because I am a Tales fan. And I want them to remaster all of the older titles. Especially Abyss, Destiny Remake and Rebirth.
I want more remasters too!
We have information about the price of the remastered?
$40!
Yes because I played this game with one of my mom’s kids and since he introduced me to the game I love it and I been wishing that I had a game cube. Now I got my chance :)
That's awesome :)
I have never heard anyone refer to 1080p as “one-eighty p” before. Is this some weird local thing in some area? It’s not accurate.
I made a mistake
I Can tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps, and I'm sure most people can, but it takes actually paying attention to notice. and anything above 60 FPS is almost impossible to notice a difference. people obsessing over fps rates above 60 are complete idiots.
The 30fps difference makes the battle animations a little less fluid. I don't know. It's not THAT big of a deal, but it's not nothing
My biggest question is will the "skits" be English dubbed. Only the GameCube version had fully voice acted "skits"
I bet I could tell a difference in framerate as well have only played this game and the sequel on there original platforms.
because it's based on the PS2 version, which goes at half the framerate.
I bought this on Gamecube, never beat it. I then bought this on Ps3, never beat it, Going to buy it a 3rd time for ps4. Looking forward to not being it again!
Lol too difficult or too long?

That's a great attitude to have friend :)
Who knows though, maybe it could work
I'm a but confused... I already own the Steam version.... What's the difference?
Being on the switch, really, lol

I believe it's gonna sell for $40
Good video but it’s not “one eighty P” it’s “ten eighty P”
Yes, I feel stupid about that now haha
The video didnt answer the titles question.
Lol. Well taste is subjective, all I can do is give you information about the remaster so you can decide if it's worth it for you 👌
Yeah but all I learned is about technical stuff and "this game is great" + the premise
By the title I just thought there would be more to it. E.g. about the world, the characters, the fighting system. Instead 5/6 is about resolution and fps.
This video is probably awesome to those who couldnt decide which version they should pick. But not for those who are interested in the game itself and if they should buy it at all.
So now that I think about it my comment should have been "The video didnt answer the titles qustion for me"
But whatever I know there are other sources that I can give a try 👌🏻👍🏻
The PS2 version being 30 fps only was the heart of the problem for every remastered version based on it. It is probably too hard to code this version of the game to run at 60 fps since even the modding community wasn't able to do it on the Steam version, so Bandai Namco just gave up as well. I believe the best solution for a definitive edition would be to add the PS2 extra content + the PS3 new content on the GameCube version and then remaster the GameCube version. But I don't think Bandai Namco is interested in this extra effort.
I mean at that point they should just remake the game rather than Remaster (I'd be fine with that)
the gamecube versions 60 fps but the ps3 version is based on the ps2 version of symphonia with more content which has a lot more technical issues because the game was rebuilt from the ground up. The only thing that peeve's me is the lack of dawn of the new world
After watching a few playthroughs, I think it's omission might actually be to this games benefit, haha
I cant waitttt
I'm excited to finally play it portably!
Some information for the Steam version :
Its internal rendering resolution was at launch at 720p. (Locked)
In an update, that added some element from a mod called tsfix, it was bumped to 1080p. (Also locked)
Regardless, whenever the two most popular mods were used, they didn't "upscale" the resolution, they replaced the internal rendering resolution to one that could match an user's monitor native resolution, up to 4k.
Sweet uh ?
The NGC version :
The PAL edition is 50Hz, it sits weirdly between the PS3/Steam version and the US/JP version.
It's slower, but also smoother than the PS3/Steam version.
Let me tell you that all my timings acquired back in the days on PAL50 were all over the place on the PS3 and Steam release. (A bit better now)
But it's still my preferred version to play to this day.

Anyway, I'm still an idiot and ordered it on Switch.
Thanks for taking the time to break this down, I appreciate all the extra info :)

When you can play a superior version and it's emulating a near 20 year old system you really can't justify paying full price for this. I've only recently tried the 60FPS version as while I own an original GCN version (And I'm still playing it btw: ua-cam.com/video/g2UIMt89aGg/v-deo.html) it's an Australian version which runs at 25FPS (Though somehow still feels smoother than the 30fps steam version)
Had this version been 60FPS I would have bought it instantly but as it stands, I'll only buy it if it goes deep discount some time in the distant future. Just play the thing on Dolphin, the extra content is mostly fluff anyway.

It feels like a slap to the face for people who wanted games like Tales of Destiny DC outside Japan, especially when the original Tales of Destiny turns 25 this year. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to announce a remaster of both games, but I guess the NA fandom just likes riding Tales of Symphonia's schlong too much. Ah well.
Tales of Destiny remaster might be a harder sell since it wasn't nearly as well known in the West
@@WesDoesGames I know, but still, it'd give us a chance to play not only Destiny Director's Cut, but also Destiny 2 (the actual one) since neither game was ever localized.
180p
☠️
I think it's at 30fps is because the ps2 is a weaker system than the gc, but because it had extra content, all future versions would be ports of that version. Kinda sad.
I think that's the correct answer
@@WesDoesGames yeah. With that said tho, I'm still gonna buy that chosen edition physical copy. I love the series that much. Plus, I recently bought and started playing the pc version. Sure it's not as smooth as the GC version, but it's definitely more than playable. Definitely looking for people to play the game co op with.
I want to hear more about these steak accomplishments
Just buy the ps3 port it comes with the sequel and way cheaper lol
No way people can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 at this point.
On a non-modern game though?
You are kidding right? The gameplay is 60 and feels very smooth compared to 30,. Switch between this and the pc port and btw I used a wii. It outputs 60 in combat and towns/dungeons and 30 fps in the overworld.
I could've forgive 30 overworld for just 60 fps in combat but there is a clear difference.
This is ok for people only on switch and do not have the game but it is a lazy port.
180p! Lol
