Everyone focuses on Uraraka in this episode, for obvious reasons. But this is also an episode where we see and learn a lot about Bakugo.
This is the first time we see him in a fight where he isn't fighting aggressively. He's on defense all match, because he actually recognizes how potentially dangerous Uraraka is, and that he needs to be cautious.
We hear his arms crackling before his big blast against the falling rocks, and his arms are shaking afterwards, showing that he has his limits, and he basically hit them in this fight. He puts on a good face, but he was struggling there, and it wasn't nearly as easy for him as people would assume.
As soon as Uraraka falls, he stops. He's not looking to go too far, he's just looking to win. You could even call the look on his face as she falls "concerned." But as soon as she starts crawling again, he assumes a battle stance, because he doesn't want to take chances, and recognizes that she could still be dangerous.
And the obvious, after the fight when people are after him about beating up on a frail little girl, he's pretty much the only one that calls her strong.
As much as Bakugo puts on a great exterior of being a tough guy who's aggressive, hotheaded and crazy. He's very analytical, intelligent, strategic, and even respectful, in his own way. He really hides it all well, but he's much more than just a hothead with a violence boner, and the signs of that are there, and have been there from the beginning.

I think this is actually his toughest match in the sports festival looking back. If Shoto went all out then it woulda been his hardest but Shoto was distracted. For everyone else he had a strategy, was setting the pace and picking them apart. For Ochako she made him use his full output, made him nervous and set the pace while surprising him.

My favorite little moment in this episode is how Bakugou immediately stops his attack when Uraraka collapses, showing mercy and dignity. But as soon as she starts crawling and trying to get back up, he assumes a fighting stance again, showing respect and acknowledgment towards her which is very very rare for his character. He's not just some hot-head bully, he's serious about being a pro and is willing to respect those who earn it.

I could easily see a different type of hothead just stand idly watching until she crawls close enough to touch without him realising and just winning the match. So I appreciate the conscious effort by the animators to include him squaring up again, it’s these consistent subtle touches that really show properly how smart he is.

Respect for those who earn it, save for Midoriya, who is a very specific trigger for him and thus Bakugo at this point in the story is genuinely unable to acknowledge his strengths or respect him because he feels doing so is the same as admitting he himself is weak. He doesn't have the same hang-ups with Uraraka and Kirishima as he does with Midoriya, thus why getting him to respect them is relatively less of an obstacle.

Bakugo is the kind of person who grants his opponent respect, regardless of gender. Holding back on her would essentially be telling her that he thinks less of her or considers her to be a weaker opponent. The audience and Present Mic were in a way looking down on her because she looks frail and is a girl. But Bakugo saw her as a person, as a hero, and a worthy adversary and wanted to fight where they both gave it their all.
We saw that before the match began, Bakugo seemed confused when he read that he'd be fighting Uraraka. He didn't even remember who she was. But after he saw the resolve she displayed, he respected her enough to remember her name.

He'll have a hard time controlling his quirk. A single blast might send him out of the bound. Deku has to train to move in air while using Float, so basically that's what will happen to Bakugou too because he isn't used to moving without gravity.

    • @python1972
      @python1972 Рік тому +16

Yeah, I always thought this was one aspect that was really missed. With the focus on the ‘touch him’ strategy everyone keeps mentioning the plot ignores the ‘what next’ question that would actually be important. And the way we have literally already seen bakugo leap to other cavalry teams, pretty much fly over the minefield, the flip over deku in the 2v2s he is pretty comfortable in the air. I mean if he wanted he could probably pseudo-fly I’m his fight already without the anti-gravity assist.

    • @BryMartinezV
      @BryMartinezV Рік тому +5

@@jacobwilkinson5479 yes bakugo wouldn't be completely caught off guard to immobilize him immediately, but he would still be caught off guard for the rest of the fight. He knows exactly how strong of a blast he needs to move himself throughout the air but as soon as he has no weight he has to figure it out all over again. One small explosion could send him hurtling through the sky and cause him to spin because he can't balance himself.

One thing i find interesting about the "balugo calls people by their name when he respects them" thing is that he doesnt call deku by his name, despite pretty obviously respecting him. Even though Uraraka lost in the end, she was one of the fighters that left the biggest impression in the first round. She was at a huge disadvantage considering she had nothing to use her quirk on except herself and Bakugo, but she used Bakugo's temper and thought of such a great strategy that if Bakugo hadn't reacted so quickly and had the energy for such a huge attack, she most likely would have won.

Especially knowing deku is in a totally different wheelhouse (aka the demigod variety) I feel like they would honestly work really well to build themselves up together and love the idea that they are the real rivals and gym buddies. I’m of the opinion that Bakugo’s habit of not using people’s real names isn’t a matter of purposeful disrespect. With Bakugo, I think it’s more likely that he just doesn’t pay attention to other people in general, so he genuinely does not remember most people’s names. When he does use someone’s real name, it means that he cares enough about them (as an enemy or as a kindred spirit) that he is able to remember their name.

Poor Uraraka. All she wanted to do to was to help her struggling family... the phone call was so heartbreaking...
I feel like so many people who hate Uraraka tend to make her feel really one-note (i.e., Deku's love interest and nothing more). That's not the sole reason, but it is one I can't help but have seen numerous times. Listen, those two are perfect for each other, but not every bit of her screen time has to revolve around Deku. If that was the case, it would make her feel pretty boring. She has depth, backstory, compassion. I swap between who I consider best MHA girl a lot, but Ochako ain't no slouch in my eyes. A little less-understood note that people often miss. The reason Bakugo assumed Deku came up with that plan isn’t just because they’re friends. It’s because it was such a good plan. As much as Bakugo rags on Deku, he has always acknowledged Deku’s brilliance in his own way. Anytime someone does something extremely intelligent, he assumes it was Deku’s plan because he knows just how smart he is.

Both Bakugo and Endeavor approach Midoriya, and his immediate reaction is to cower. His voice gets super high and scared, but when Uraraka and Shoto are mentioned he gains his composure and isnt scared to stand up for them. When it comes to others Midoriya is fearless.

Even years later, I'm pretty sure this is still my favorite fight in all of My Hero Academia. To begin with, I just love the strategy of it all -- and how it all depends on the two of them respecting each other as opponents.
The plan wouldn't work at all if Bakugo let himself get distracted. If he'd turned to shout at the hecklers, or just stopped focusing on Uraraka for any reason, he'd have spotted the floating rocks, and been able to counter it much earlier. But he was laser-focused on her, instead. He knew she was a formidable opponent, and so didn't take his eyes off of her for one second. And that gave her the opening she needed.
And she knew he would act that way. If she had doubted he'd focus entirely on her, if she thought he was just a contemptuous blowhard or that he'd be sexist enough to not take a girl seriously, she'd have expected him to look away at some point, and never thought her plan would work.
Uraraka respected Bakugo as an opponent. Bakugo respected Uraraka as an opponent. This wasn't a bully vs. a frail girl, and neither of them ever thought of it that way for a moment. It was two prospective heroes giving their all against each other.
And more than that, I love how Uraraka is allowed to get bruised and scuffed and sweaty and bleeding in a way so few female characters ever get to. This isn't some clean, delicate, beautiful fight -- it's a knock-down, drag-out brawl, and she gets to get dirty in a way far more typical of male characters. Even her outfit for most of the fight -- the tank top that shows off her strong arms -- is something you rarely see on women, at least not without it getting a lot racier. There's nothing male gaze-y about her presentation here -- she's not there to be ogled, she's there to fight. She's the subject, not an object.
There are longer fights later on in the series, there are more spectacular ones, there are ones with higher stakes. But this is still, by far, my favorite.

Think about what happened to IIda back around episode 8 when he suddenly lost his mass and couldn't compensate, going out of control. And he was more experienced at using jet propulsion at this point! It is entirely possible Bakugo could have sent himself out of bounds before he could learn what sort of touch he needed and even then he'd have been more vulnerable, especially since Uraraka could have cut the zero gravity at any moment it was advantageous.

There's a lot I don't like about this fight. For one thing, if she uses her quirk on Bakugo, he can just use his blasts to fly and stay in the arena. I don't think you can logically get around this unless you take a lot of liberties with how that interaction should work. Another thing is Bakugo's blast and the whole, "he's not holding back" idea. He could have just blown her away with a massive blast. She couldn't even dodge his small ones what possible reason could that translate to her being able to dodge a big one? I can see him being careful at first sure, but after a blast there's nothing stopping him from using that momentum to at the very least charge a huge blast that should have just blown her away.
I really like the message the author was conveying with the fight. 'Don't underestimate Ochaco, she can fight, she's strong on her own etc. I think that's great. I really do like the ending impression the author gives us of her and what it does for her character development, but I just think the way he got there was illogical and ham-fisted.

  • @Kaempfdog
    @Kaempfdog Рік тому +7

Well. Here we are. The final round 1 match. And 2 main characters on the list. It seems simple on the surface but it is NOT. This battle is INCREDIBLY complex and a large VARIETY of this just…completely blows my mind with its nuance and crazy…everything. This is my favorite fight of the arc. Not season, but this one just has my favorite fun facts to research here for now.
I have to once again point out that Uraraka DID have the path to get to the finals as no one on her side of the bracket OTHER than Bakugo had the likely tools to beat her. Even Dark Shadow which is still attached to Tokoyami, and Mina who while faster, I don’t think had any real means of wearing Uraraka out based on the hits she takes today. And the armor boys? Fodder. There is literally not a worse match up for either of them. Maybe Deku, but he’d break a finger to push them out so it’s still SOME guaranteed damage. Kirishima and Tetsu COULD break out of Todoroki’s ice possibly with semi free hands even if not REMOTELY a guarantee. Yeah. Uraraka is their most dangerous opponent. She would still end runner up as EVERY main character on the OTHER side of the bracket can beat her easy.
So based on the information I see this episode…Uraraka and Bakugo are either dead even…or Uraraka has a slight edge. Here are the things Bakugo has FOR SURE before anyone gets upset at that. He has reflexes, speed, and a quirk advantage ON THIS FIELD. Uraraka has more stamina, resilience, and jeez, I’d even give her strength here. Now the reason I say this is because of the overall end result. Uraraka ends exhausted, and used literally everything she could. And let out a big enough move to force Bakugo to use everything he has to stop it. She takes hits the ENTIRE time, and STILL has the strength to do so. And she exhausts Bakugo’s quirk…which hit HIS limit and he stood still the WHOLE TIME. At the end, Bakugo would not have run towards her unless he COULD NOT do anymore long range blasts. His arm was creaking, which if I recall is his sweat glands popping. (Ouch!) So at the end, go figure, if Uraraka truly kept standing, Bakugo was in BIG trouble since he was although now the BEST brawler, but still a brawler and Uraraka is practically IMMUNE to that. (And I think Bakugo is WELL AWARE he could have been in trouble based on his acknowledging her. That’s not friendship like Kirishima, that’s saying he sees her as a worthy opponent.)
If you disagree, I would say this. Who is stronger, the person who goes to carry the heavy thing while NOT physically spent and struggles, or the person who IS and they carry the same thing, and BOTH are successful and both struggle about the same. That’s the best analogy I got for this. The exhausted one is at the very least MORE LIKELY stronger.
The big things that kept Uraraka from winning was the field more than Bakugo’s quirk. A blank field with no ammo? She HAS to let Bakugo hit her to get anything done. There’s no long distance strategy she can go with. That’s just a PAINFUL strategy, and Monoma acknowledges Uraraka is FORCING this result. Could she have done smaller moves to keep herself less harmed? Yeah, but only the big one would force Bakugo from his long range to short range quickly and not just a big opening.
Would Uraraka win if she DID get him even though he can fly? I have next to no doubt. Bakugo’s flight he JUST learned TODAY he is still taking into account his own center of gravity and such. Destabilizing him with a removal of gravity and he will likely launch himself out or just spin uncontrollably if he uses the alternating hand blasts. Which would be a HUMILIATING way to lose. And also SO fitting that the bully kid with a bad temper ends up defeating himself trying to stay on the front foot. And I still think that Uraraka making an impact with him AFTER being made weightless will only end badly for Bakugo as she maintains her own gravity. Uraraka at worst falls over like all his other blasts (which I’m STILL not sure would happen because that is just an impossible thing to test. 2 objects impacting with 2 completely different gravity forces applied? I don’t think science will EVER get far enough to test that.) and Bakugo gets LAUNCHED backward.
Then there is Uraraka’s quirk itself. And this is going to be a subject A LOT. Her quirk does the CRAZIEST things and when you know gravity laws, you are either wracking your brain figuring out what she did, and when you still make it all gravity focused powers to make it happen, she goes from strong, to OVERPOWERED and it happens SO fast.
What does she demonstrate today that is NOT application of zero gravity? Decrease in gravity is the easy one. After every hit, she had to throw her rubble UPWARD to keep it out of Bakugo’s view. And yet it is all clustered a few short stories above the stadium. It STOPPED somewhere. In a dome like cluster all close together. That means it’s slowly dropping but the gravity is loose enough for it to not just drop immediately. And the difference between lower gravity and “no” gravity is MASSIVE. So she can likely MODERATE it. And if that’s not crazy enough, when she “drops” the rocks they act very uncharacteristic as well. They fall in waves, but all reach their target at AROUND the same time. It’s not a big wave, the cluster just moved DOWN to Bakugo. And it clearly did not all fall at once. There’s air resistance sure, but that is next to impossible to account for in animation, and in this situation…next to no way it would apply. And I noticed she did NOT say “release.” I’m not saying that HAS to be said, but could VERY well open the possibility for something else to occur. And considering the effect…that’s gotta be a VARIETY of different gravity INCREASES. That is the ONLY thing I can think of for THAT effect to occur. And THAT is such a broken concept I can’t even. If THAT gets honed enough she could freaking get 13’s black hole in her arsenal. And it NEVER stops being weird. And this just seems too deliberate to say Horikoshi just didn’t take this into account. He showed what happens to baseballs with no issue under zero gravity, so this just screams foreshadowing to me. If I weren’t literally studying astronomy, I would write this off too but Horikoshi clearly demonstrates he knows a LOT of subjects to make these characters develop so differently.
And as if THAT doesn’t get any crazier, it STILL doesn’t stop. When a quirk recoil hits, the effect is constant. Bakugo’s arm creaks, Iida can’t move, Deku sheds body matter like a snake leaves its skin…except NOT healthy. Uraraka? She gets sick. SHE DIDN’T HERE. This is the biggest move she has done the whole show so far and she doesn’t get sick. So there’s something we are missing with her recoil too. So I looked for patterns. And I found it. She gets sick, but it’s when it happens that interests me. It’s not when she carries too much which she often carries LESS for that to happen. It’s when she switches between floating and releasing FREQUENTLY. That’s not a weight limit, that’s vertigo. The best way I can use an analogy is a car. Stomp on the brakes then stomp on the gas over and over at like 0mph to 10mph. You get car sick before long. Gas safely to 70 mph and then brake to 0 mph safely and you don’t. THAT is what I see with Uraraka’s getting sick recoil. That is the constant pattern I found. She only passed out because she (understandably) can’t take shockwaves and explosions to the face. She can take it for WAY longer than you would expect, but THAT is the damage that knocked her out. Not a quirk limit. Which is CRAZY that is what it takes to wear her down.
I’m not boosting Uraraka unnecessarily. Even with ALL of this I found, Bakugo still won with the advantages he needed, AND came out near physically untouched outside his quirk, which is an invisible limit to the audience. (Speed was the big one) But to not give her the respect she deserves here under the various circumstances is just not something I can do. Uraraka at this point is at bare minimum an actual combat match. She gets faster or better in close range, and Bakugo might not have as favorable of a result. Aizawa had every right chewing out that hero for not seeing yes Bakugo was getting all the good hits, but she was TAKING all of them too and Bakugo HAS to go hard if he wants to win.
And her plan was mainly taken from what she already learned from the Season 1 training match. So she was still looking for things like his big right hook, and knew Bakugo would get stronger with his sweat before she could wear him out. Deku likely had more combat info on Bakugo at MOST to give her.
And for it to come out with that scene with her dad and family? Yeah I get misty eyed. AND she still goes to prioritize rooting for Deku when he wanted to comfort her. Sigh, nice to see good parents after meeting the Todoroki backstory conflict.
And THAT is where we leave off. Endeavor challenging Deku with his son to show an All-Might similar power who is boss and Deku standing UP to Endeavor. (Even if it kinda sounds like Endeavor is rooting for Deku to get Todoroki on the “right” path.) And the two UNQUESTIONABLY strongest quirks in the tournament going head to head. If I didn’t love looking into Uraraka’s quirk rules so much, this next episode would be my favorite of the arc just like everyone else. (We got another doozy next time.)

As much as Bakugo annoys me sometimes, he doesn't underestimate his classmates, he fights to win, he respects them as people and as future heroes he thinks he will be number one but that isn't arrogance, he doesn't treat anyone different from each other, male or female, he knows his skills and he prepares for theirs. And that is something I respect about him. Even when he's talking about killing everyone. XD

I mean he wasn't doing anything wrong here isn't the point of UA tournament to win no matter what?

Societal structure due to history is a really interesting topic. Before metal weapons societies were pretty equal. Roles were different but women actually gathered more food than men did hunting. A lot of cultures used to track maternal lines too. The gender roles didn't reverse until we started farming and conquering cities. Things men were just better suited for. Also something that isn't relevant in the first world yet gender norms still persist. Ironically women make better marksmen due to the ability to distinguish more color (sexual dimorphism from out hunter gatherer days) and women also have a lower center of gravity which helps with long range shooting. Yet we haven't even considered adapting this to modern warfare due to gender roles. There's even more I could get in to. Men can overpower women and we are better at throwing things but that doesn't mean women don't have natural advantages beyond child birth.

@@SubzeroBlack68 yes but I wasn't talking about sniping. I was talking about marksmanship. Sniping would be a terrible job for women simply for hygienic reasons. If you know you know. But DMs on short range patrol, watchtowers, holes up on roofs or in windows. It would make a slight difference especially if we ever go back to jungle warfare. My only point is that we don't consider the possibility simply because we place a lower value on a man's life and ignore the natural advantages of women. Equal doesn't have to be even and I'll applaud the military for trying but they aren't thinking outside the box with their gender situation.
And if more girls knew they had natural advantages in marksmanship maybe more would consider those possibilities. Shooting can be a pretty fun sport. Id love to see more dudes humbled

Aizawa's full of it. That's the kind of excuse abusers use to justify their toxicity.
I completely agree with the first guy in the crowd and frankly think Bakugo should have been expelled back after that first test.

25:53 yes, in this world, theres a lot of women that are badasses and very strong quirk wise, but this show tends to focus more on powerful guys fighting instead unfortunately, girls have their moments but, guys in the show get a lot more of those, they are all amazing moments though, which is why i love this show

25:51 Strictly speaking it's not just the strength, size or durability differences between men and women that are responsible for the general distaste of harming a woman, there is also the fact women are seen as intrinsically valuable due to their ability to carry the next generation.

i always hear everyone talk about her disadvantage but nobody ever talks about his. wtf did they want bakugou to do in this situation?
    1) use explosions powerful enough to both move her and cause her body sever damage
    2) let her touch him and get knocked out of the ring himself (i never understood why he couldn’t just use his explosions to aim his body but if this universe says he can’t he can’t)
    3) the only strategy i can think of that he would win, letting her wear herself out so she kos herself

Ong they get mad at bakugo for not holding back against a girl even though that's the literally the whole point to win no matter what if he tried to send her off bounds by touching her she would automatically win and if he used a giant explosion to send her off bounds he could heavily injure her if not literally kill her

So they don't really emphasize it much in the dub but what Bakugou meant by "that was close" was he was pushed to his limits which is why his hand was shaking. He'd used his quirk too much and it was starting to take a big toll on his body

I think that even if Uraraka was able to touch Bakugou and float him, he could Just redirect himself
With his explosions and easily get to Uraraka, so, very low chances for Uraraka to Win, maybe if some of the falling Debri knocks Bakugou uncouncious if Uraraka manages to touch him and distract him

The show doesn't make it super clear on the first watch but that big blast Bakugo let out to win the fight? That move HURTS him. A LOT. It doesn't look it, but he had to put his body on the line to beat her.

Honestly it’s not the best idea to make him float because he can basically fly already. He will still be able to control himself and if not move faster like a bomber. Bakugo is overpowered with his fighting skill
I remember when someone showed me the detail that she has a flip phone while everyone has a smart phone. It makes you feel for her
