I bought 4 of these to mic my string quartet and 3 of them have broken beyond repair. It's a shame as I liked them but the build quality isn't great. If you take it apart to change the battery you will see how cheaply made. The sound is nice and if you are very careful then I would recommend it but the Gooseneck will break unless you are very careful
I recently puchased a myers pickup after watching some of your video reviews. I'm using in a live outdoor setting, and while it sounds nice, it's too quiet and I get feedback if I try to push it. Any advice for getting it louder?
I also purchased this pickup and I encountered, that there is an impedance issue: If you plug in directly with quarter inch the output of the pickup is very low, but if you plug in via xlr (just e.g. put a preamp like lr baggs venue in between) the output is much loader, you don't need to raise the gain nob like insane and it's fine. Maybe this helps?
@@PikkuMyyViolin I discovered that mic placement is crucial. I play hammered dulcimer, and it wouldn't pick up hardly at all until it was literally inside my instrument. But then it sounds great!
Thanks for the video. Do you mind telling me what equipment/software do you use to produce the different reverb/fx/EQ sounds on the violin with a pickup? I recently purchased a Kremona KNA VV3 pickup along with a Behringer Q802USB mixer and I am still not sure how to get the most out of them. I would love to be able to produce similar sounds like yours. Please if you don't mind sharing your suggestions and advice. Thank you!!
Hi David. Thanks for the great review and in depth demo. I was wondering if you would mind plugging a set of headphones in and seeing if it works? I'd like to use it as a personal monitor on a loud stage when there are no in ears provided. Thanks.
That wouldn’t work because it needs some kind of headphone preamp. When you connect it to an amp, it “amplifies” the low output on it. Headphones need extra power to work.
@@luchology I assumed so, but wanted to make sure. It's proving rather difficult to find the right device to accomplish what I need... Thanks for getting back to me
So, I play the cello and there are occasions when I'm on a very loud stage where I can't hear a thing. Mostly we don't get in-ears for these events so whether I play in tune or not is a bit of a lottery, and I don't gamble. I'm basically trying to find the best solution to monitor myself. At the moment I'm using a tascam dr10-l recorder with lav mic and plug the headphones into that. But the battery is terrible and I wonder if I can find something better
Hello Pablo, thanks man! Yes of course. I also have a feather. The feather sound the same as the grip but exactly like you said; you can clip it to your tailpiece. It is a very good option. You can put it near the F holes or behind you bridge like a 4060v by dpa. The grip is more like a 4099v for placement. If you dont want anything touching the wood of your violin. The feather is a great option! But have in mind that the feather is a built for all instrument. The size of the clip and mic can feel a little big for a violin. Would you like to see a video demo of it? Cheeta Pablo!
@@davidpicheviolin thanks x the reply David. I don’t think is necessary a demo. I own a dpa4099 which sounds good but sometimes I get quite annoyed of the clamping because I switch very often between arco and guitar style position. I have looked into the dpa4061 but I don’t like that it is omnidirectional mic and not feeling to spend another 500 bucks.... So, I probably give a try to the feather! How is it with sound rejection? Looking forward for your effect shoutouts
@@davidpicheviolin I am wandering exactly the same, if I should rather take the feather or the grip with clamp for my violin. Just cannot decide. And another question: You are using the 6 inch gooseneck in the video right? I unfortunately could only purchase the 3 inch version at Thomann (I'm in Germany) because they don't offer the 6 inch. Do you think the 6 inch is better in terms of placement flexibility or is the 3 inch enough? Thank you for your help. You are really doing great videos!
not as a midi or 13 pin connection. The GR55 will process it just like any instrument, but not for the GR55 synth sounds, just the guitar effects (delay, reverb...)
What's your opinion on if it is suitable for high-noise enviroments - say, a rock-band with very high amount of sound on stage from electro guitars and all that? Will it pick up only the violin, or will it also pick guitars/drums blasting at full in the back? That's my main concern of choosing fishman V300 vs this Myers. I want more natural sound, but am afraid that the natural sound of full rock band behind me will come in as well, if you know what I mean =)
That’s the big question:) honestly, the myers pickup doesn’t fit your needs if you are looking to play a very high gain sound gig. It will feed 100%. In other hand, a fishman, a kremona, lr baggs, schertler statv will perform fine with it but will still pickup some of the outside noise. Out of those 4, the stat v would be the best option for sound rejection. If you are looking for the best mic for super loud environment, the crown is going to the remic 5200LB. The sound on its own isnt great because the eq of the mic is super scooped, but in the mix on stage its really good. Even next to the drummer, you wont feed. I hope this helped! Cheers Sergey🎶🎻
Salut David, Bon travail. Looking forward to hearing back from you! 🤗 Benjamin 🎻
Not bad, but not even close to dpa 4099. Missing some harmonics typically true violin sound. The headroom is not there. But still one of the better pickups.
Oki great! Yes I used the A design Reddi before. Awesome piece of gear, well built, tube pre as well. The Reddi will drive a myers super well but, if you are looking to shape the sound of your mic. Go with something you can dial an EQ on your preamp. Grace design, millennia, avalon, or fishman on the cheaper side.
True, but like I said in the video. It’s possible to fix this by adding a preamp or an amp after. Also, have in mind that at a show the soundman will drive you with his board. At home if you are recording yourself, you can give input from your soundcard.
@@ViolinSoundscapes it really depends of the quality of the soundcard you have. My sound clips are coming out of an apollo twin and you cant really noticed a noise floor.
He's done what most of these pickup reviews do. He left a vocal condenser mic on while playing with the pickup, so the amplified sound will be partly via Mic and more natural than in reality.
