  • After milling up a piece of Lilac, I promised you that I would show you how I go about putting a CA Finish on it for a pen, so here ya go. I am NOT saying that this is the only way or even the best way to do this, it's just my way of doing it. Hopefully you'll find some of this information helpful if you currently struggle with getting a good CA Finish on a project.

For me I never had luck with the ca finish, but for over 30 years I have been a furniture finisher, and I found 4-6 coats spray on pre cat (pre-catalyzed lacquer) works great. And yes your pen looks great. :)

Lilac turns beautifully! I'm still trying to get a good CA finish, thanks for the tips Chris!! Have you tried using a CA accelerator between coats? That is a gorgeous pen my friend :)

I would suggest wiping between each grit change. This avoids left over one to another.

Yet another way to CA. Amazing to a new pen turner the CA variations
So, no problem putting CA over the polish?

I like those bushings, do you find they wear faster than the metal ones?

What grit did you sand the blanks to before applying CA glue?

  • @JackbenchWoodworking

2 questions, Chris. Have you ever tried CA on something larger than a pen like a box or maybe a clock? Also, does the plastic polish get stuck in open grain woods like oak?

I enjoyed the video as well as your channel. No offense meant but did you come up with that routine for finishing, or did you get it from other turners. Just asking because most of the ones I watch use that same method. However, there are some who sand less. Who is right.?
    God Bless my friend.

  • @johnwallace4408

Chris, please do not sand any hardwood past 320 grit. If you do, you are just burnishing the wood. Any finish will not be in the wood but, on top of it. I want my finish from the inside out. Great video for the way you do ca finish.

Thanks for showing how you apply a finish. Does it matter if I use a flex ca glue or regular ca glue. Thanks.

Chris Cute Thanks, I have only used SticK Fast CA wood Finish and it has been good so far. I was just curious about using the regular because it comes in larger bottles but I have heard it’s not as durable as the Wood Finish type and the regular is prone to cracking. Thanks for your input.

12 thousand or 12 hundred grit on the final polish? I'm more familiar with metal & composite matetial but we only go up to about 1200 grit

If you don't want to spend money on non-stick PE bushings, cut a few 2" x 2" pieces of plastic cling wrap and cover your steel bushings. Secure the folded-over corners with tape or a rubber band. CA won't stick to cling wrap or plastic bag material.
