She mastered that "saying a lot yet emotionless and unremorseful stare". Which drilled in my head when Louise Fletcher played the role.
Fletcher is underrated. I’m binging Star Trek: Deep Space 9 and her role in that is completely different from Mildred.
But the writing of the original is so much more sinister. She didn’t need to say lines like “thinking of all the things I’m going to do to you” she just had that look on her face. She used sweet words with a condescending controlling subtext that made her so compelling as a villain.

based on the trailer alone, netflix gained a gold star for this one.
For those who have missed the point: Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest isn't a supervillain. She isn't a mastermind. She isn't an iconic horror character (OFOTCN isn't a horror film).
She is an example of a whole system that has gone massively wrong. She represents the apathy and dehumanisation practiced by a whole society, not just one evil woman.
To give her a dark origin story, like she herself is somehow inherently important, misses the point entirely.
I would disagree. The character is remarkable because of the position she is in, being an accomplice to acts which we now deem inhumane (for obvious reason) all the while displaying that she believes she is doing the right thing. Providing a background allows us to explore the character and understand how a person could come to believe these practices are good, and if she is unsure of if they actually are, why she stands by. It’s been a few years since I read the book, but one of my biggest take aways was how powerful of a character nurse Ratched was, keeping the men who worked for her in line during a time when the patriarchy unquestionably ruled. Finally, I think the use of horror is beneficial in multiple ways. First, it makes the story more interesting and consumable for the masses, much more people will want to see a horror about a character in a book the may or may not have read (or also just may not care about). I think this is similar to Sarah Paulsons character Lana in AHS because that character was also based off of a real person, telling a similar (although definitely altered story) in a horror. In addition to this, insane asylums at this time were in many ways horror already because of how awful they were, maiming patients in the name of “science”. The people that experienced this essentially lived through, or died as a result, of a scary story.
Agreed. Also, she is very much human in the book. This setup for her character is kind of ridiculous.

least compatible with what we see in the film to the point that it is impossible to connect the dots between them. Apparently, Nurse Ratched was way OTT, bloody and fashion
conscious in her younger days but toned it down a lot when she got older. I like Ryan Murphy and have always been a big AHS fan but he seems to be on a giant ego trip lately.
That Hollywood what if mini-series is a good example. On one hand, it would be nice if all the racism and bigotry could be swept aside so easily. On the other, ...it sort of
trivialized the real life struggles and sacrifices people made to bring about change. Real change is always slow and painful. I don't see what was served by rewriting history

Exactly. Nurse Ratched is just naturally an evil controlling woman that has the entire mental ward in her grasp. She is the powers that be. Everyone works for her and fears her because of how she plays the game. This show just completely ruins all of that and shits on everything that made Louise Fletcher’s portrayal so iconic. They’re trying to make us sympathize with Nurse Ratched and make her look like a product of her environment? Hell no that’s supposed to be the role of the patients. I hate this show already just for existing.
Brenna Moran your explanation has a blaring flaw right in the middle. This being similar to Sarah Paulson’s role in American Horror Story. That’s not what this is supposed to be, but they clearly made it that way. This is completely unfaithful to the source material wether it be the book or the film.

I finally watched Ratched after many years. Surprised there is no second season to finish the story line. It ended without an ending. Then I discovered it was cancelled. Ridiculous people over at Netflix.

Elektrikkiss I actually went in for an operation yesterday and as I watched the nurses talking I thought of this trailer and was suuuuuuper grateful to be in 2020! Lobotomies are heartbreaking and terrifying and I do agree experiencing it must have been so much more horrifying than simply seeing it

ayana lobotomies were ways of picking off pieces of your brain- basically it involves severing connections in the brain's prefrontal cortex. Most of the connections to and from the prefrontal cortex, the anterior part of the frontal lobes of the brain, are severed. They used it as a mental health treatment back in the day. But yikes considering that it was done by a screwdriver (or ice pick or other suitable instrument) up your nose or eye socket? It was heartbreaking and so very painful. (Hope I answered your question).
I do also recall hearing that back in the day if doctors didn’t wanna do it like they were lazy or busy they’d just hand it over to the nurses like “idk figure it out”. Horrifying stuff.
ayana - the prefrontal cortex (the area mutilated/removed/damaged in lobotomies) is responsible for planning complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision making, and moderating social behaviour. but honestly the frontal lobe, by large, is responsible for higher cognitive functions such as memory, emotions, impulse control, problem solving, social interaction, and motor function. there are a wide range of side effects, both physical and mental, from lobotomies. everything from seizures to complete absence of emotion regulation (meaning, someone may not feel empathy, remorse, guilt, etc. and may fly into a rage at the snap of ones’ fingers).

I think this trailer looks a lot better than the first, but I still feel like it feels a little too much like AHS. Nurse Ratched was evil in the original movie, but it was a kind of grounded evil. Abuse of power and manipulation. It still felt like she could exist in the real world. This show makes her look like some psychotic serial killer nurse.

It's supposed to be based on the character from the book/movie one flew over the cookoo's nest... while Ratched was a striking vicious character, she wasn't part of some horrible horror story. She was cold and jaded but never truly evil in a overly sadistic way.
Yeah Nurse Ratched was petty, spiteful and uncompromising, she wasn't Dexter or Hannibal Lecter. This looks like a good and interesting show, but no way can this Nurse Ratched be part of the same reality as the book and film version in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

This show already looks so visually scrumptious. The color palette is really something else. And of course, Sarah Paulson rocks these period pieces.
This misses the point of the character completely, but it keeps the “medicine bad” theme Kesey wrote. Kesey was part of a quack movement that believed there’s no such thing as mental illness.
characters are not people, they're just vessels for meaning. this is more interesting than fan fiction.
I felt the same when I saw the first trailer. They are trying to create a very pompous, sadistic environment when in the book and the movie nurse Ratched was a manipulative sort of passive-aggressive dictator; Louise Fletcher became immortal as Ratched because she portrayed very effectively a manipulative bureaucrat full of herself; not a CSI psychopath
This series shows how she became the character she was in the film
@@austinpearce5442 I do not think so. They are rewriting the character; which is not bad. I think the purpose of the book/movie was to show expressions of everyday violence in modern societies; how bureaucrats recreate violence. And Louise Fletcher was a spiteful, cold-blooded, self-righteous person working in a "regular" environment; not some kind of serial killer within an overly sadistic institution. The trailer may be too dramatic to get our attention though. And the series looks good; but I do think it stands in a very different position from the one in the book

I hate the fact this is so colourful and perfect. Part of why the film is so good is because it had those film impurities and it was so drab. That’s a big issue with this series but also with modern TV and film as a whole: it’s too perfect. This seems like a glorified American Horror Story meets Mad Men meets Shutter Island meets Riverdale. I find it hard to be scared or tense by something that looks so pristine. Conceptually the shots on display look cool, but as part of a larger narrative, not so much
No, this show perfectly represents the feeling that buildings in the late years don't always have to be old and crumbling and creepy. The psychiatric hospital is new in their times.
