+blackburnrovers11 No, actually they're second. First is Swervedriver. And if you do not know who they are, I rest my case. If you do, maybe your're right.
I know this band is popular but nothing will stop me from saying how underrated they are still. Especially seeing how overrated some of the other 90s bands are today.
@@thebasedgodmax1163 Smashing Pumpkins were my favorite band for 20+ years until I finally found BTS. Still love the Pumpkins regardless ( got to see them at Riot Fest up close).
We didn’t realize how lucky we were back in ‘99. So many good live shows at Variety Playhouse in ATL - BTS, Modest Mouse, Stereolab, YLT, Luna. An amazing band every other week. Pre 9/11 (the Modest Mouse show 9/26/01 we were all in a daze trying to piece together what had just happened to the world), pre social media. I wish the teens/twenty somethings of today could go back and experience the pure joy of those shows. But at least we have the Keep It Like a Secret tour to look forward to. Thanks Doug for being awesome and pushing on!
It’s foothills rock, and as such it speaks to a perspective of life that’s unique. Who cares if nobody gets it. Built to Spill are a legend. Thanks for posting.
Saw this live on HBO with my brother in 99. Man it changed our lives. We're both modest mouse, pavement, delusions, bts, pond, hazel, and other fans because of this...
I've seen Built to Spill 8 times and every time is better than the last, Doug evokes feelings that no band can. Best band in history and they continue to make incredible music to this day. Rarely can a band change my life in so many ways.
OmG, I recorded this back in the day on vhs, lmao! I was 15, I believe Moby's play album was on this episode too.??....so freakin cool! I watched that vhs tape every other day for years, so AWESOME to see it here!! :)))
So many transitions from one erm... section, I dunno the musical term, to the next... place. Rich, rich music. Like a 7 layer cake. What a wonderful song.
I remember listening to a MM live recording and they thank BTS for having them and thought I have to check this band out , instant fan !! they are so great , they bring Me to a different place and I love it !!!
This show was fantastic. Learned of a lot of great bands from this show. This was before the internet was anything even close to what it is today, good non-mainstream tunes were tough to find back then. This is a phenomenal tune, such a great intro. I use it to open mix cd's quite a bit.
They opened their show with this one, and I think it should be mandatory to do so going forward. I love how much the drummer has to get into the intro.
i was at this show and the clips actually do it justice. Phil Ek was doing sound and they had an extra guitar player and it was mind blowing. i didn’t even have a ticket and just showed up and someone left one for me on the truck outside!
If you haven't seen this band live yet, go out of your way to do so. Doug is a modern John Lennon in terms of song-writing prowess, but is as humble as a first-time coffee shop performer. The shows are simultaneously laid back and face-meltingly awesome.
Truly one of my favorite bands ! I have been a fan of "built spill" since I saw this first air on HBO then in 99' and I taped it, and still have it too. There still going strong......very underrated band for like 20 years.
Thank you, Idaho. Thank you for Torrie Wilson. For potatoes, of course. I dunno much else about Idaho but thank you most of all for Built To Spill - my favorite American band. Alas, I had to miss them last time they came to my neck of the woods because I had to take a final and couldn't reschedule. Stupid future and career prospects *grumble*
Still here. Eat up everything that they have put out. Not one single dud in their catalog. If you're even more curious, check out singer Doug Martsch's previous early 90's Boise/Seattle punk band, Treepeople.
BTS is definitely one of the best live bands I've ever seen. They completely destroy Free Bird live, not that I'm one of those guys screaming out Free Bird at concerts or anything...
@ChopperJohn4 There's Nothing Wrong With Love is really good too, that was my first album of theirs. The instrumentation isn't as good, but the songwriting is amazing. Just a really fun album.
I got to see this whole episode when it came out and oddly enough Built to Spill and Pavement were both in the episode. If you can find the whole episode, watch it and you will have your answer.
Soooo goood!!! Any built to spill fans might like this BTS remix album called "the Electronic Anthology Project" is all the songs you love with funky elec beats!
Clément Pelletier Doug is the only one from this crew still in the band. Live shows are more mellow. Doug on guitar, one bass, drum set. More laid back than this style.
built to spill are the most underrated band in the history of music.
+blackburnrovers11 No, actually they're second. First is Swervedriver. And if you do not know who they are, I rest my case. If you do, maybe your're right.
Meeki Modest Mouse
They aren't underrated.. lol
Pretty popular
Nah mate, Game Theory are the most underrated band in the history of music.
No way, that would definitely be Enon.
I got Doug Martsch to autograph my ticket stub in 2001 and he wrote “Dug.”
Probably the greatest intro ever in a song, and one of the best songs ever overall.
My favorite is definitely the opening to When Not Being Stupid Is Not Enough off of the BtS/Caustic Resin split.
absolutely the most fantastic intro to a song
Best thing to ever come out of my home state. Proud to be an Idahoan thanks to Doug Martsch.
I know this band is popular but nothing will stop me from saying how underrated they are still. Especially seeing how overrated some of the other 90s bands are today.
@Jay Sharp smashing pumpkins are better than BTS imo but that's like comparing apples and oranges, and I love both of those fruits
@@thebasedgodmax1163 Smashing Pumpkins were my favorite band for 20+ years until I finally found BTS. Still love the Pumpkins regardless ( got to see them at Riot Fest up close).
It’s good to see how SP and BTS have similar fans since they are probably my 2 favorite all time
Top 5 favorite bands, hands down

Hey! Right on! 90s teen here!
I know exactly what you mean!...I miss those days soooooo bad!✌✌✌
It’s foothills rock, and as such it speaks to a perspective of life that’s unique. Who cares if nobody gets it. Built to Spill are a legend. Thanks for posting.
They are underrated because the guitar work is so good and they make it sound easy.
Best intro in any song ever made.
Truly another level.... they dont play their Instruments, they kill them.... normally its the other way round. Masterful.
this is priceless. cant imagine my life without bts
How can we dislike a built to spill song ?!

Built to Spill is absolutely, positively, definitely not the best band in history. Not a chance.
@@Paul-dw2clwho asked paul
I was front row for this. Still one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands...
Sweet now I don't have to kill myself
You never have to

Exactly
That intro gives me chills... Love it!
my favorite built to spill song. intro is amazing.
I saw this song live in DC and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
Being reminded of my adolescence in such an intense way makes my eyes water.
Definitely in the top 10 rock intros ever. I slept on this one for a long time, but this became one of BTS’ signature tunes.
I was at this show! Wow, I feel old. Crazy.
It still sounds great.
Jim Roth is THE MAN!!
My favorite band, my favorite album and one of the best songs ever written.
One of the great 90s bands. Glad to see these guys still kicking out the jams after all these yeatlrs

"Movements" is the term, and yes absolutely! Love this tune
I remember listening to a MM live recording and they thank BTS for having them and thought I have to check this band out , instant fan !!
they are so great , they bring Me to a different place and I love it !!!
Saw BTS at the Middle East in like 2009. It was an incredible show.
Oh...I do love that dolphin-like sound of the slide guitar...~
Absolutely gorgeous live...!!!
This song is the only song that could get my baby to sleep 😴. They still love it 10 years later. 🙇🏻♀️ Thank you og BTS ♥️🐛
Probably the best band I've ever seen live. They just kick kill it in their live performances.

@@milutingeorge1509 no stupid. It was a show on HBO that introduced me to bts pavement imperial teen sigur ros to name a few.
Came out my senior year in high school. Takes me back to some rad fucking times.
They opened their show with this one, and I think it should be mandatory to do so going forward. I love how much the drummer has to get into the intro.
I've been watching the clips from this show...The sound and play is so unfucking believable!
i was at this show and the clips actually do it justice. Phil Ek was doing sound and they had an extra guitar player and it was mind blowing. i didn’t even have a ticket and just showed up and someone left one for me on the truck outside!
I was there!
so jealous :/ was only 9

I'm from Boise and I just heard about them and omg!!! I've been missing out.
this got me in to indie rock.
I've seen them live around this time. They were insanely good

If they got on TV and everything, how can they still be underrated.. they're an awesome band I really don't understand people's taste in music.

Kevin Green I WANT THAT TAPE!!!

Doug still plays the same guitar
who needs hair when youve got built to spill
The lap-steel in this show was amazing. This live show was how I heard them way back. I had goosebumps whole time. I love Time Trap and Carry the Zero
20 year anniversary tour coming up !!! Get your tickets .

awesome find, bts has saved me over many times. mental music. thanks doug
Just saw them last night with Dinosaur Jr. @ Vicar St. in Dublin. They were brilliant. Love this video. Great track. Thanks for posting! ; )
Been too long for a comment.. this song and video makes me so happy.
this is so rad. I never knew that hbo had a music show like this. I love the 90s and I love BTS!!!
The last Minute... incredible. This looks showy, but its to create this beautiful complex music... man.
Wish i was there, better than the album cut!
Saw them play this tonight at Wonder Ball in Portland. Was f%*&ing epically wonderful.

Who gives a shit what they wear, their music is pure bliss.

This is the real BTS. Not that boy band from Korea.
where has this band been all my life?
