Elaine Cowan I only chilled the cake after the crumb coat. The colours and black are all done at the same temperature, just make sure to do the colours as shown in the video. Super easy! 😉

I'm so happy to hear that your cake turned out so well! The sprinkle placement can be rough, but I've got a few tips on how I do it without denting here: sugarandsparrow.com/decorating-cakes-with-sprinkles/
Hi! I am not a fan of buttercream, do you think I could use it on cream cheese frosting? It looks amazing your cake, I really hope my attempt will come out as beautiful as yours ❤
I’m planning to make this cake this weekend for a birthday party. I had planned to use boxed cake mix just to save time on that end, and because, why not, but I’m concerned that it might be too soft of a cake to hold up to the work that the frosting entails. Does anyone know if it needs to be a denser type of cake, such as homemade? Thank you.
Hi there! I answered you on my blog but I'll answer here too in case anyone else is wondering. It is perfectly fine to use box cake mix! Believe it or not, I actually use it all the time for cake decorating tutorials because it takes a lot more time and ingredients to make a from-scratch cake just to show the decorating process. Go for it and I hope you have fun making this cake!
@@SugarandSparrow we ended up deciding to make the chocolate cake ourselves, also from your site, and just finished frosting it (will decorate further tomorrow). I’m super happy with how it’s turned out so far! Thank you! But I’m still blown away by how suuper smooth you get yours! Will have to keep practicing. Thanks again for getting back to me.
@@UBN11742 So happy you made my chocolate cake recipe! Hope it was a hit and thanks for taking the time to let me know how helpful this tutorial has been as well! Cheering you on!
You could totally do this with white instead of black! If you don't want the colors underneath to show through too much I would refrigerate the cake for 20 minutes before adding the white on top. This way the colored buttercream won't mix with the white when you frost it but will peek through wherever you want it to. Hope that helps!
Alsooo I was wondering I could get your advice. I’m doing a galaxy themed cake that’s dark blue and black.. which colour do you recommend I put down first?
The key is to only tint a small amount black. You really don't need a whole lot of black frosting for this design. You can also add a little cocoa powder (if you don't mind chocolate flavor added) to make it even easier to darken. Here are all the details: sugarandsparrow.com/galaxy-cake-tutorial/
I have never used whipping cream for frosting cakes before! Instead, I use this vanilla buttercream recipe for pretty much every cake I make (including the one in this video): sugarandsparrow.com/vanilla-buttercream-recipe/
Hi This cake is amazing but mine was a disaster. I used Swiss Meringue Buttercream which I now assume is the wrong type because all the colours just blended together. Can you advise what icing I should have used. Thanks.
Hi there! I'm sorry the swiss meringue didn't work out. This is the buttercream I used for this tutorial: sugarandsparrow.com/vanilla-buttercream-recipe/ I hope you get a chance to try again!
Hi there! I have never tried this technique with swiss meringue buttercream so I am not entirely sure. I would experiment with it before adding the splatters to the cake, or you can also splatter it with some white food color gel like this: amzn.to/3anS9Z1
Hi there! I've never tried this with whipped cream frosting before, but as long as it's the kind of whipped cream frosting you usually use to frost a cake (stabilized) and you can tint it these colors, you can use these techniques!
Im going to attempt to make this for my son’s bday. I’ve been practicing with 2 so far that have been disasters. For the colored buttercream do you only add a few drops of the gel colors? Or is there something else you do?
Hi there! Excited for you to make this cake for your son's birthday! For the colored buttercream, that is correct - add a few drops of the gel colors until you're happy with the results. My advice - start with just a little color gel (a drop or so), mix it into the buttercream, and see if you need more from there.
If you can achieve these colors with cream cheese frosting it should work! Although cream cheese frosting does tend to be a bit stickier, so I would anticipate that it won't be as easy as working with this vanilla buttercream.
