      For this cake I used all Wilton gel food products, however I now use americolor as well and I think I like their black better. As for the dehydrator, yes, I use it in place of an oven. Mine only reaches about 55C and works awesome for drying those flat pieces fast! I have used it for drying figures as well but only ever with the top off and under a close watchful eye.

    how much buttercream do you spoon out for each of the different colors? How much white gel do you put into each bowl before the colors?

    • @TheRobynsNest
      @TheRobynsNest  2 роки тому

      Just a couple of tablespoons of buttercream for each color should be sufficient and you don’t need much white, just a small squirt will do, maybe a 1/2 tsp at most.

    How long should I chill the cake for? Do I need to chill before icing it the first time? What colors did you use? I try making one today but my colors weren’t so bright. Also do you have a chocolate cake recipe? Sorry so many question.

    • @TheRobynsNest
      @TheRobynsNest  4 роки тому

      Chilling time varies depending on the temperature. You don't have to chill before icing but it can help minimize the crumby mess. For the brighter colors I used all Wilton gel food colors but I added white food color to my icing before I added the colors so it made them extra bright! As for the chocolate cake recipe, this one is a favorite of mine. ☺️
      Chocolate cake
      1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
      2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
      1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
      1 teaspoon baking powder
      ½ teaspoon salt
      1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
      2/3 cup packed light brown sugar
      4 large eggs
      1/3 cup water
      2 teaspoons vanilla extract
      1 cup sour cream
      ¼ cup vegetable oil
      Preheat the oven to 325F. Grease pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
      In a large bowl, whisk together all of your dry ingredients. Add both sugars and whisk until evenly combined.
      In a seperate medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, water and vanilla, then whisk in the sour cream and oil.
      Make a well in the center of the dry mixture then gently add the wet mixture. Stir until no streaks of flour remain being careful to not overmix.
      Pour batter evenly in pans and bake 35 to 40 minutes. Remove from oven when fully cooked and toothpick comes out clean.

    Hello again, and thank you for your quick reply the other day!

    • @TheRobynsNest
      @TheRobynsNest  3 роки тому +2

      Hi! You should be able to decorate your cake entirely except for maybe the stars that stand like you mentioned. I would add them just before transporting the cake so they don’t flop from moisture when you store it. Now typically you don’t “have” to refrigerate your cakes unless they have fresh fillings like cream cheese, but I always refrigerate to set the cake for transport so it’s nice and firm then I recommend to bring it to room temp before serving, an hour before should do. Your best option is to put it in a cardboard box then put it in the fridge as the cardboard will help keep any fondant decorations from forming condensation, as the box soaks up any moisture. If unfortunately you do not have the extra space to refrigerate it, it will be fine in a box in the coolest room of your house. I would be weary of putting it in a pot as that might be quite difficult to get it in or out as you do not want to risk messing up your hard work. I hope this was helpful, and I would love to hear how it all turns out for you!

    • @TheRobynsNest
      @TheRobynsNest  4 роки тому

      I haven't because it's much to thin, but I have read that if you add some sifted powdered sugar to it, it can be used with fair results. Ultimately, I would suggest a homemade chocolate American buttercream for the black thought, as it is easier to achieve a nice dark black.

      Yup, I just use a basic ABC recipe and add a little cocoa and a little extra milk. It goes,
      1/2 cup shortening
      1/2 cup unsalted butter
      1 Tbsp vanilla
      1/4 tsp salt
      4 cups of powdered sugar (sifted)
      2-3 Tbsp cocao (sifted)
      3 Tbsp milk
      1-2 Tbsp water
      Cream butter and shortening with salt and vanilla using whisk attachment until fluffy. Switch to paddle attachment on mixer then
      Gradually add 4 cups of powdered sugar, your cocoa, milk and water, on a low speed, alternating till combined. Continue to mix until smooth. Do not over mix as it adds air pockets which kinda sucks for piping flowers.
      You can wait until the end to add your cocoa if you like tho so you can reserve some white icing for your colors
