  • These are neat as they use a wedge system in the handle to auto size while applying consistent locking pressure when you are gripping something small or large. They are just bulky and heavy and the handles are to large AND far apart when closed.

I do not have a pair of these in my tool boxes, but I do have a couple of pairs of Craftsman self adjusting channel lock pliers that I received from my father with the laminated jaws that came with sleeves to cover the jaws when you did not want to mar the piece you are working on. The Craftsman pliers did not work well on grabbing a round object because the laminate teeth did not grab well. I use them to grab objects that I do not want to mar as they adjust quickly and will not damage the object.
I am sure the laminated jaws on these locking pliers will have the same issue.
    Great videos.

Want SERIOUS jaw force? Weld a ~3" piece of rod as a T-handle to your existing visegrip adjusting screw and lube (I use anti-seize) the threads. The handle is easy to operate even wearing welding gloves and you can apply far more force than any manual squeeze by the same person while under precise control.

I have the Craftsman version and I think they came in two sizes. The funny thing is that I never reach for these because I have Irwin's also. But they are bulkier as you say and with good holding power. The thing is I prefer the Irwin's because of the single piece jaws. These riveted three piece just don't seem as reliable.

Interesting for sure, but too bulky and the laminated body turns me off as all those rivets can do nothing but get loose over time. Thanks for showing them to us

I've had the small Craftsman version for maybe 20 years, no problems ever. Kreg Automaxx clamps use the same type of mechanism. I recently got a few of them for super cheap and found one clamp didn't work so well. I found this video ( ua-cam.com/video/M08BX8ue3UY/v-deo.html ) that helped me fix my problem and it also shows the two disassembled wedges CM is talking about. Now, all my clamps work fine and I'm happy with them but now I know why they were so inexpensive.

Don't ever drop them in the mud, they're a terrible PITA to clean out and won't work until you do.
