  • Few bands have experienced such extreme highs and lows as the Bee Gees. Throughout their decades-long career, the band of brothers managed to be both grossly underrated and one of the best-selling acts of all time.
    Barry Gibb and his younger twin brothers Maurice and Robin started out in the late ‘50s as a teenaged pop group in Australia. Their impeccable three-part harmony caught the ear of the prominent UK manager Robert Stigwood, who had a heavy hand in molding the Bee Gees into a world renowned group.
    After some fits and starts, the Bee Gees found themselves directionless through most of the early ‘70s… until they found new levels of success in 1976 when Barry Gibb discovered his famed falsetto. Their classic run of disco hits followed including the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack which was the highest-selling soundtrack of all time until The Bodyguard in 1992.
    On today’s episode, Rick Rubin talks to Barry Gibb about his new Dave Cobb-produced album, which features country music-inspired renditions of the Gibb brothers’ brilliant songbook. They also talk through the making of some of Rick’s favorite Bee Gees songs and Barry recalls what it was like collaborating with Barbra Streisand, who wouldn’t sing a single note before 2 a.m.

      Thank you for this awesome interview. Barry was really relaxed with you and gave us lots of new stuff. I would love you to encourage Barry to do one more album, with you producing. So disappointing that you couldn’t do what you desired with Barry and Robin. It would have been a interesting to hear your version of their sound.

    I recently saw the video of a country song "Indian Summer" sung by the Gatlin Brothers, Roy Orbison, & Barry Gibb (1985). Barry co-wrote this with Larry Gatlin and produced it. I had never seen the look of pure joy on Barry's face standing beside Roy Orbison and singing with him. He had the look of a dream come true for him.

      @@dianaphillips6603 -They actually talked about it. Robin went Solo for awhile in 1970 because of disagreements with Barry. The 3 would communicate with each other thru Maurice. It's in the Doc. When Maurice died, Robin and Barry didn't speak for a number of years. (below is from an article in the english papers)
      "But whilst that tension assisted the Bee Gees' creative output in many ways, it rumbled on throughout their personal lives, and caused an irreparable rift between Robin and Barry.
      This conflict lasted throughout Robin's battle with cancer, and sadly, right up until the day he died.
      What was even more tragic, is that Barry regretted the fractured relationship he had with his little brother, and confessed it in a heartbreaking eulogy at Robin's funeral."

    Barry Gibb & The Bee Gees are finally coming to their own. I don’t think they are underrated anymore. Watching reaction videos, younger people are in love with ALL their music. It’s so gratifying that at least Barry is here to see how beloved they are & how respected, finally, is their entire legacy.

    • @beeharbour
      @beeharbour 2 роки тому +6

      Yes, there's a whole UA-cam sub-genre of reactions to Bee Gees songs and most of them are blown away by their talent. It's too bad the most awesome twins ever left us so prematurely and that for many reasons. One of them is that Barry now recalls or says he recalls things differently than he did when they were alive and always in a way that magnifies his own contributions. He discusses his song writing process and I'm sure he's truthful about how he writes by himself. The process was much different when he wrote with his brothers though and all 3 of them spoke about it many times over the years in substantially the same way. Barry arriving with tapes of his nocturnal inspirations was not part of it.

    • @leosag816
      @leosag816 2 роки тому +4

      @@beeharbour I agree with everything you said. But Barry is pretty broken now that his brothers are gone & he can’t go back & give them their proper respect. It must be lonely & sad to reflect on it all. I’m still happy for him to see a new generation loving the music.

      @@beeharbour Maybe because he now has the freedom to tell it as it was!!!Every group needs a strong creative, motivated leader to succeed.
      To most of us fans it was obvious that Barry was that enthusiastic creative leader.
      But it is just as obvious that it was all 3 that made the whole thing complete, with what Robin and Mo contributed.

    • @beeharbour
      @beeharbour Рік тому +4

      @@allymayful Barry was never shy to bitch publicly about Robin especially. An enthusiastic and creative leader is certainly very important but not so much if you don't.want to be led. They were legendary for their infighting and it generally was over Barry's insistence on getting his way. Maurice and Robin were creative and enthusiastic themselves. I don't think either of them wanted to be a leader but wanted a say in their own careers and they didn't always get one. I'm sure birth order and family dynamics played a role, possibly a very large one. At the end of the day the 3 of them shared the same experience in their musical careers so Barry had no more knowledge or savvy about the music industry; the twins started at the exact same time as him. I freely admit I'm a Robin fangirl and thus do not necessarily view Barry the same as other, sane people do. It's hard to look back at their careers and not conclude that Barry asserted himself more than his brothers would have liked. By the '90s he was singing even songs Robin wrote. As I say, though, I see him in a different light and see flaws where others do not. What must be noted by anyone who listened to this interview that Barry just randomly peppers his answers with criticism of Robin for no good reason. This is kind of petty of him as is his ignoring Maurice completely.
      Well, that's probably enough of my nonsense for today. I know he was not a monster by any means but I've decided to keep thinking he is anyway. This is stupid and I know it to be stupid so there you are; another mildly to moderately unhinged Robin fan.

    • @allymayful
      @allymayful Рік тому +3

      @@beeharbour Thanks for your honesty. We all have our challenging emotions - esp us women. I just think we need to accept that every group of people have their dynamics, esp in music. And that us fans, who love their outcomes, don’t need to add to their conflicts. Of course we have favourites but let’s not put one down to build up another.
      I’m sure your observations have some truth about them but we have to remember that there’s always another side to the argument that we may not know about. And let’s face it, they did pretty bloody well musically, with their longevity, and financially for a group that had a few challenges, more than just their own relationships. So something must have worked - hey??

    Barry, what happened with the Dixie Chicks is that they insulted their own fans by something Natalie said on stage. Then they doubled down. THAT is what happened. I loved them but they got so vicious, I never bought another record by them. Backlash is real. You and your brothers never insulted your fans. You just made the industry mad because you were dominating the charts. You never insulted or turned on your own fans. You never did anything to divide your fans. You knew you were performers, not political activists. My favorite song on Green Fields is Butterfly. And on the In The Now album I love The Grand Illusion. But all of the songs on that album are really good. It is hard to pick a favorite.

    Ashley told me once that Barry as the number one, number one song writer of all time. This was back in the late nineties. He said the duo of McCartney and Lenon had more number ones but as a single writer Barry was the guy with more hits in the number one category. I’m sure Max Martin has that title now. I have so much respect and admiration for Barry and his brother’s accomplishments. Ashley is a great kid, too. I met Arif Mardin, once. He was such a gentleman. He was a be-bop/Charlie Parker fan. What a great talent he was. It was nice to hear him mentioned along with Ahmet. It’s amazing two Turkish guys were at the helm of a huge part of Americana music. And I met Mac Emmerman once and it was great talking to him about Criteria. He said to me it was simple why they were so successful; they had all the gear no one else had. It became the Atlantic Headquarters is the south for a time. Those were great days in North Miami. So many hits made there. Anyone remember Ace Music?!?!
    Anyway, this interview is choice! Glad it’s published. Thank you for making this a thing. If I could sit in a room and write a song with Barry Gibb, my life would be more than complete. I’ve marveled over his prowess for decades.

    History gets a little distorted when it comes to recording the song "To Love Somebody". The Bee Gees version was recorded on 21 April 1967 and released as a single that summer. Surely, even though it was penned for Otis Redding and did not record it, he must have heard the song since he did not die until 10 December 1967.

    It's very off-putting to hear him keep randomly dropping unflattering observations about Robin and ignoring Maurice's existence almost entirely. People are still talking to him today solely based on what he accomplished with his brothers. His solo work was underwhelming to say the least. Why it should be that he himself "discovered" his falsetto but Robin was insecure when he tried different styles or ranges is not clear. Robin did mix it up occasionally especially in his solo work (which people actually listened to) but the vast majority of what he sang from the beginning to the end of his career was in his gorgeous natural voice. If he didn't like to sing at family get togethers or whatever, so what? (Maybe Pa Gibb was around making sheep noises since he thought doing so was a funny way to ridicule his son's voice.) Sounds like a personal preference not a character flaw but Barry has mentioned this several times that I've heard as if it was indeed a character flaw. When he said he didn't know "how Rob felt" about getting away from dramatic ballads I wondered if his trousers ignited. Coincidentally, I'm sure, dramatic ballads are all Barry thought Robin could sing. He also makes a point of saying that Robin "didn't bother" with the orchestration (which I believe because Maurice also said as much although not in such judgemental words) but doesn't mention that Maurice was deeply involved in it. More important to denigrate Robin than give Maurice his due. It all leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
