Have been on Soundgym for six months. Everyday user. Cannot believe how well i can identify certain frequencies now. I listen to old albums i've heard hundreds of times before and hear them now in terms of their frequencies. Never was aware of this before.
@@domdraper3221 It isn't really hard to have a daily routine because the guys who made Soundgym really understand incentives. So i'm drawn to reaching their prizes/goals, as silly as that seems. Been training for about 8 months almost every day and have noticed a huge improvement in my listening, EQ and mixing decisions. Definitely worth the money. Train your ears and avoid buying new gear (GAS syndrome).
Big fan of SoundGym here, nice to see your review. Really recommend this service. The panning game revealed serious issues with my imaging (despite a fair amount of acoustic treatment). It motivated me to rebuild my acoustic treatment and now it's so much better! Lol @ the guys thinking that you've "failed the most important skill" or that you need to know what 3500 Hz sounds like to make a good mix etc. That's like saying a pianist who doesn't have perfect pitch can't play or that a producer without knowledge of music theory is automatically crap at producing. People seem to forget music is about FEELING sound. Maybe the same people who need to check how many likes they are getting on social media to see if other people like them? ;) Keep it up, Wytse.
This thing is so legit that it should be mandatory. I did daily workouts for a long period and after just a month I was able to make incredibly quick and precise EQ decisions. Recommended! 😉
Through UA-cam, Thunderbolt out to Focusrite Clarett 8PreX, into Yamaha HS8's....I was SURPRISED to be able to hear the audio differences! This is awesome and I'm sold on this for training! Thanks a lot!
As a songwriter I thought of an app that could train your ear to improve melodies. Of course it would have to include rhythm as well. Keep up the good work!
Phillips used to do one called 'Golden Ears' which was very similar and the differences got less and less, the higher levels you got to. I eventually made it to Golden Ears status, but I think its not only trainable, but like any other exercise, it can deteriorate if you don't practice. Worth doing this every now and again...
I'm actually surprised that it was that hard for you, I felt like all of those examples were like really obvious. Seeing a pro struggle this much made me feel confident about my hearing :D
Dom Draper Let me rephrase this for you: as a beginner, it was encouraging to realize that professionals don’t necessarily have superhuman hearing abilities.
I think this goes a long way to show just how subjective musical hearing can really be. I've been wondering about these training software things. I've never moved on it because I just didn't want to be throwing good money away. This video really opened my eyes. Thanks for putting this out there.
Thanks for the review! I have done Philips Golden Ears training previously and it is super beneficial to have something measure you against your own perception and opinion. Key is having as close to linear monitoring as possible or you are at an immediate disadvantage.
Awesome stuff. People who will try this after watching you will realize exactly how difficult it is for us regular Joes. I think you did great with the games. It is funny how you start hearing let's say 6k like a musical note :D
HI! I got tinnitus a year ago. (Thats a physical thing.) To train the brain and be aware of your "new" kind of listening is a good thing. Thats because you can start doubting yourself in a mix situation. This site is good.
Great video!! I was wondering why you picked those earbuds instead of headphones like the 770HD? How good are those earbuds on cutting/adding low frequencies? Cheers!
Man I find EQ'ing the hardest thing to do because of all the variables,, mostly the room you are listening in has its own sound regardless of your speakers, not everyone has a perfectly "flat room" so you are not hearing the actual response of your monitors, you are also hearing your "ROOM"
I was surprised by how far off you were on the EQ test. I tried it myself and I'm pretty good at it. But I sucked at the stereo image/pan test :D I guess the EQ was easy for me because I'm doing live sound engineering from time to time. I have tuned PA systems by ear like 8-10 times a year for the past years. That really helped me out here
Would this help you mix better? Having a better ear for certain things would certainly help, but would it help you listen to something and say, “you know what this mix needs…. It needs some compression here…” (or whatever)?
very interesting... I found that the compressor test was way hard for me because I tend to go for segregated dynamic compression, simply to bring up elements to cut through a mix and perhaps not as much to bring balance to the given sound. So without seeing the boosts and the cuts and makeup gains etc it was hard to determine what the test deems "compression" and how I hear it when I use it kind of thing... well played and great vid

These exercises work great for frequency and location training. I only have the free membership for Soundgym because I think they are overpriced for what they offer, but there are many similar tools that are less expensive and more focused or broad, depending. The Quiztones apps are cool, Studio Ears is good, too, and mynoise.net (I think) has similar tools. It's amazing how much improvement just a little bit of practice every day makes, but I still can't quite get compression/dB changes as well as I'd like. I'm wondering if I have an issue that hampers dynamic sensitivity. I seem to need MASSIVE changes in compression to really be able to pick out things like pumping that others seem to hear so easily.
I don't want to say you failed at basic balancing of instruments and frequencies that some others are saying. But always interesting as usual, great to see more videos keep them coming!

Hey Wytse, if you're really going to train with this website, like maybe a short time every day, I really expect you will see improvements quickly. You are totally right in that you can train this stuff. How about you do another video of this in two weeks, and show us how much better you got? :-) (you could even livestream the practice sessions if that sort of thing motivates you--though I'm not sure how useful a 15 min livestream is, haha)
hey in the test youre doing at 6:20 you consistently kept picking an octave above where the boost was. i dont know if you noticed that or what that means entirely but it may be something about your room or the way you hear sound, probably a mix of both mmm? ill day dream about it but this might be a useful tool in understanding what you can and cant hear in a given environment.

@@DanielLeschziner it would be easier. Sometimes, you have the right balance but not as à same volume as the reference. Yep maybe some kind of vca instead lol.
On the 3 preview games, I got better than 17% on the EQ, better than 90% on the gain, and better than 92% on the pan. It makes me feel like I don't need to bother with the subscription honestly
I've been doing SoundGym for a while now - it really does improve the way you concentrate on sound. BUT I am affraid after a while all it does is trains you to get better at those specific "games" - the same way when you go to the Gym - you get better at lifting weights in a specific way
I disagree with this (not 100% of course, just a little). It teaches you to really focus on nuances (as you said) because it's a game and most humans innately want to win and be above average, knowing how I fit in vs other users is depressing in one way and revealing in another. For me after a few hours it made me realize that there are some frequency bands that I really don't "Know" well or maybe for what ever reason not comfortable boosting or removing them. This game forces you to be a more rounded engineer and quickly reveals your weakness's. I hope this platform keeps expanding. Like for example a good game would be "Master this track" & "Remove the offending frequency"
Your comment about our ears fooling us: Ever tweak an EQ for a good while and realize the input was turned off? lol I got an 84% on the Peak Master, 70% on DB King, and 95% on PanMan; not great but not terrible Edit- Thanks for showing us this, it's way more affordable than another one I've been looking into
Holy shit that PanMan score. I got like 14% xDD While i got like 79% on Peak Master. I wonder if there's a change if I had used a pair of headphones instead of speakers.
It's fun, but a way too expensive subscription service imo. Maybe with running some sandstorm through the game, you would have kicked everyones ass and imediately reached super Master Engineer level.

White Sea Studio = EQ Noob lol.
Your comment about our ears fooling us: Ever tweak an EQ for a good while and realize the input was turned off? lol
I got an 84% on the Peak Master, 70% on DB King, and 95% on PanMan; not great but not terrible
Edit- Thanks for showing us this, it's way more affordable than another one I've been looking into
Holy shit that PanMan score.
Uli Kah $7 for a year isn’t too bad.
@@domdraper3221 Are you sure ? It's per month I suppose...yep it's 25$ per month or 120$ subscription for a year 😑
Uli Kah yea it says 7 per month, but you have to pay up front for the year 😒
It seems good .A little overpriced .Would It help with my own compositions ?
No offense, but I think I will continue to do my own Mixing and Mastering. It appears you still need ear training.
Real Music 4 you do you mean those muddy mixes on your page? Dude you need all the help you can get.
@@domdraper3221 I love haters, especially coming from someone who does not have any Music of their own on their Blank youtube page! Hey, It's okay. But just so you know, I have Thousands of record sales. I have On those original songs You listened to More fans Than you probably make in a year. My music is being sold and Played worldwide. I would Say My Fans Would Beg to differ from your Jealous, Envious Hatred Remark. I never Claimed To Be A Great Mixing and Mastering Engineer, However, I Do Make A Living Recording, Producing, Mixing and Mastering My Own Music. I am Getting Better As I Continue to Learn and Grow! As you continue to Regress. I will even let you have the last word, as I refuse to Waste my time on a useless eater. Be Happy and Enjoy Your Life, Peace.
Real Music 4 you, yea you have no sales, and no fans. I can’t believe you wasted your time writing that rubbish comment, and I can’t believe you thought I would believe it. Hope you have a good day tomorrow working at Pizza Hut.
White Sea Studio = EQ Noob lol. The thing is, the material makes a difference... so really playing with fabfilter bell curve boost & solo'ing the selection won't get you too far, for beating that game. Pretty neat, none the less. Another thing is, I use an EQ balancing hack (fabfilter replication of another company's curve) for balancing my particular model of headphones, but its only available to be on, inside of my DAW... so I would be an epic fail at this too.
Doing the best I can song were to find that the artist name a d all
Darude - Sandstorm
