  • BRATISLAVA TO ŽILINA
Grab a drink or a snack, because this is a long one!!
This was a fun trip, and the first of a total of 8 city trips that I'll be doing on my channel! I will do a video like this once a month.
I wanted to give you a real-life experience of what it can be like to travel by train in Slovakia and what the city of Žilina is like. You'll get a bit of a tour of the main railway station in Bratislava, and then a bit of a casual experience once we go into Žilina.
    I hope you enjoy!
P.S. You can DEFINITELY leave a comment to help give me pointers on what I can do differently or better for a video like this. I didn't intend for this one to be so long, but maybe you like that anyways??
I probably won't give a grand tour of the train station for each of these videos, but wanted to for the first video of a mini-series.
    Thanks for watching!

Slovakia has a lot of character, I grew up there now living outside for the past 36 years. Every time I went back it feels
very enchanting, almost romantic. Every country is unique you might say, but Slovakia packs a punch for its size.
If it had the Spanish climate and was on the Mediterranean, it would be just about perfect. The railway network is the longest in the world for its size and has the most UNESCO heritage sites for its size as well as castles and manor houses. if I could describe
Slovakia, it would be an absolute gem. When it comes to people, they are very direct and straight to the point, they dont
like excessive politeness. But deep down they are in the right place.

Slovakia definitely has a lot to offer, there is still so much more to see! Slovaks are good people in my experience.

I have lived in Zilina for some time and the upper courtyard was where we spent our Friday evenings. The pubs would let you take your beer out and sit on the benches

I watched your enjoyable video while on the treadmill. My wife and I are both from Slovak ancestry and hope we can make the journey to Slovakia one day. Continue showing the local shops and sights. Subscribed to your channel…hope to view a new region soon. Your English is remarkably eloquent. Best of luck

Good video! As for me, I prefer visiting Žilina in sommer, the city tends to be more vibrant in that season. Check out the Dubeň watchtower up in the hills to get a nice view of the town.
Don't forget the seat card for your next train ride ;)

Thank you, I appreciate it! I really try to not butcher pronunciation. I practiced the Slovak alphabet and some basic words for a few months before I moved here. Having Slovak/Czech family members around growing up helps too!

I live in Žilina. So thanks for sharing this trip to my town. I think you mistaken Žilina's coat of arms with the one from Nitra in the video thumbnail.
I really suggest you come to visit in summer. The town is much nicer. The upper square (Mariánske námestie) is full of patios (outdoor seating) extending bars and restaurants located on the square. So you can enjoy a beer and meal outside. Many of the restaurants are really good serving tasty dishes. Shame you missed them (another reason to come back).
I am happy to see the small bakery Anjelské koláče are still in business. Those cakes are heavenly good. BTW the business name means angelic pastry.
    Worth to see or try:
    - Budatín Castle (just 20 min. walk from city center)
    - Observation deck located on the Dubeň hill behind the train station with stunning views of the town.
    - Burian's Tower - the tower close to cathedral you passed by in the video. During the tourist season you can climb the stairs of the tower and see the town from the other perspective. Just book a visit free of charge in the tourist information centre located on the lower square (Hlinkovo námestie).
    - BikeKIA cycle hire - you can hire a city bike free of charge for 30 min. from many cycle stops around the town.
    - paddleboarding at Žilina water dam.
    ...And many other things.

I will likely come back in the summer time. At the moment I want to have one of these bigger trips a month. It can be tough on my wallet so I'd like to space things out...
Anjelské koláče was a fantastic bakery! Great deals and verrrry tasty..
I've taken some notes on some others comments and yours regarding this trip... Future city trip videos will be a bit more fleshed out to showcase the cities, at least that's what I'm planning...thank you for the suggestions 👍
btw I updated the thumbnail, I always mix up those two cities for some reason... thanks for watching!

wow, the video is so amazing, maybe as a small suggestion, next time for another city, you can consider looking at different aspects of the city, like the cost of living in terms of rent, food, transport, etc. also business opportunities or ideas that can thrive in that specific city, education institutions like schools and universities and how they rate to other cities like Bratislava, recreation and so on. nevertheless the video is so nice and i can see you put in a lot of hard work. so proud of you mate.

I went to school in Ohio with some people who share your last name. Thanks for sharing your train experience. That will take the edge off when I show up in April. I do plan on visiting that town and working my way east to Prešov. I would have definitely entered Butcher’s Bits! Also planning to visit the High Tatra’s and another national park thats name is escaping me. Started taking my Slovak lessons more seriously this week.

@@ihlan1 I hadn’t planned on visiting Bratislava, but I changed my mind. Turns out there are a lot of one day trips I can make out of that city to visit the surrounding regions. I suspect I may get to Zilina by The end of the second week of April. I just spent 20 hours in the air coming back from Australia on Wednesday. I’m handling the Jetlag remarkably well. I’m going to attribute that to not eating the airline food. 😏. I’m headed to Mexico next week to hike the mountains. I’m happy to see it’s getting warmer in Slovakia the last 2 weeks…

I would love to. I started to visit the 8 major cities of Slovakia earlier this year, but ran into some hiccups before going to Nitra, and then Eastern Slovakia. I will definitely be going sometime and will make videos on those trips, just need to slowly plan them out.

Thanks for the video. I'm jealous that I don't get to travel around Slovakia like you do.
To the right of the RegioJet sign, there is a statue in a glass case. Who is it of, and what's the significance?
At the very end of the Butcher's Bits menu were phrases like "...without a single éčka," and "...no éčka." What's an éčka?
    Vopred ďakujem!

    • @nicksterba
      @nicksterba  Рік тому

I'm not sure who the statue is supposed to represent, next time I'm there I'll take a closer look at it and will figure out who/what it represents 👍
As for what is 'éčka', Adka texted me saying that it is "Colours, preservatives, sweeteners and other added substances in food which either prolong the shelf-life of the food or modify and enhance its flavour or colour." I hope that helps!

Koláč za pade? Slovensko je skutečně zlodějská země s těmi cenami 😀

      @Frantakoulou Рік тому

Do you think I should do a recap video dedicated for Žilina? I'm thinking I should also make a secondary video for each city that I visit that goes into more detail regarding life in these cities, wages, cost of living, etc., and then give my thoughts about that. Still getting a feel for what to mention regarding Slovak cities 😃
