  • As vast numbers of periodical cicadas emerge from their underground lairs and take flight, let's explore why and how these insects appear en-masse and then disappear with hardly a trace!
Huge thanks to Thomas for letting me film bugs in his yard and also providing some incredible footage that is featured in this video.

If you've made it this far in the description, remember to be safe when creature adventuring! Most wild animals can cause injury if harassed, and I do not recommend attempting to capture any creatures without purpose and practice. The reason that I interact with wildlife is to produce these educational videos, and I am a professional biologist. Also, I always ask permission from a land owner before exploring on their property, and you should do the same.
Keep adventuring everywhere, and keep your adventures safe at all times!

Imagine living in a society of children, and then all at once you're all adults, but only for a month and a half, and everybody needs to get hitched immediately to start a generation of new children that have to learn everything from scratch with no adults present. Would be an interesting sci fi story.

Thank you for doing a video on these guys!! These cicadas are all over our yard and neighborhood! I’ve been wanting to see/hear these cicadas since I was a child, now I’m finally getting to! I know a lot of people find them annoying, but it only happens every 13 years so I’m considering it a treat!

I'm here because we were just in the Ouachita Forest here in Arkansas and encountered these little guys. The sound they make is like nothing I've ever heard before.

I really need to see the cicadas this year, any idea where the nearest emergence to Philadelphia is? This was an excellent video Ben, you explained this incredible natural history event very well and got some cool footage too, especially that timelapse of the wings filling with hemolymph. Great stuff!

You definitely should try and see them, it was one of my most memorable wildlife experiences ever. I think there are good emergence maps online, NC has one that is coded to the county level with anticipated dates. Maybe there's one for PA!

Another great video! Great explanation about how they make sound - we have a species that emerges every summer here, and holding them to feel the sound wave vibrations is just amazing.

It must be wild for them to crawl out of the ground after 13 years of no sunlight.

    • @TheWildReportOfficial

There are a few theories. One is that it is timed to avoid predator bumper crops, another is that it minimizes hybridization with other species.

Species do not evolve these cycles or into other species. That is because genetically, and biologically, that is impossible. These cycles are encoded in their DNA the same way our life path is encoded in our DNA. Coded information means two things: A, You have to have a programmer behind it. B. Coded information will not coherently modify spontaneously in nature. All life forms are a product of what we would call genetic engineering. Both creationists and evolutionists offer a false explanation for the existence of life on this planet, and they know it.
