  • In my initial review of the Alpicool T50 12 volt compressor refrigerator I said that if I had any problems that you would be the first to know about it. We did have a problem with the first unit that we received and I thought it important to let you all know how Alpicool handled the situation. Here it is, plus more on the refrigerator's use and how it functions for us.

    Love the comment about being able to lift it. I understand and know the feeling. My mind says that 100 pounds is nothing, then the rest of my body laughs. One of the joys of getting older.

      I too can relate to that. the 18 year old part of my brain says "sure you can" and the 62 year old body beaten up by jumping and other adventures as a young man in the Army says "are you kidding me?" I looked up your link to the unit on Amazon (wife has that Prime thing) and was surprised how inexpensive they are. I was thinking like $700 as it was switching over to load. $319 for the 50T and $349 for the 60T. Something to seriously consider, the Jackery also.

      I'm currently investigating a refrigerator/freezer for my build. Liked what was said about the customer service, then I opened this link....I thought give those customer service numbers a call, maybe it was a fluke they were disconnected. All 3 numbers are no longer working...removing Alpicool from my list of contenders.

We have 335w of solar, a Renogy charge controller and 100ah Duracell AGM battery. Will be upgrading to a Lithium Iron phosphate soon but so far have never run out of power even in 85F weather with fridge and ceiling fan both running quite a bit. Also did a week's camping in June, mostly cloudy weather and still never went under 12.3v. Great review!

    Thank you for the excellent review. One concern I'm developing is reflected again by your experience. Basically, I have read more than a few reports of these units having problems with excessive current draw as time progresses. Your case is a perfect example of this. As the number of hours of run time increases, some people have reported a similar problem of the current load increasing with these units. Specifically it would have to be an issue with the compressor motor or the fan (current drawing components). I suspect it would be the compressor motor. In the cases I have read about, over a period of use, the refrigerators compressor motor resistance increases, causing them to draw more current. This would be the case if for example the windings, brushes or other components of the motor are not of high quality and good design. A simple test is to check the amps drawn new and compare that over time. If the amps drawn is slowly increasing then eventually a failure is possible. In essence, heat would slowly increase the resistance of the windings and possibly other components resulting in the failure that you had with your first one. While a replacement resolved the issue with the first one, my question is will the replacement eventually suffer the same fate? I would be VERY interested to hear from you again on this replacement unit after you have used it a length of time similar to the original unit that failed. I suspect if it was checked, the compressor motor itself is getting quite warm if not hot while running and that is causing an issue. OTOH....if the people reporting the issue are not leaving adequate ventilation for the unit at the vents, that could cause this problem as well and that is no fault of the unit. If the unit is run with the vents blocked even once, the heat rise could damage the compressor motor. I am planning to purchase one of these as well. Probably the same unit you have. I'm looking on YT for more reviews on these after at least one year of nearly continuous operation to see what the consensus is. I may take some compressor temperature readings on the one I buy to see if that's the case. If so, a SOLUTION might be adding heat sinks to the body of the compressor motor housing. I found your videos very helpful. Thanks again. Their Customer Service sounds stellar. Perhaps there are people who view this video who have put a lot of run time on them and can comment on their experience and that might be helpful to all.

      Hello Randy. On my second unit I never had a problem like you mentioned, even after it being ran for a month at a time and I just recently ran 24 hour tests in it for current draw against a new Iceco refrigerator to see which one was more efficient. The Alpicool was by a small margin. I did end up having the Bluetooth feature fail and I contacted Alpicool and they requested I send it back for a refund. They paid for the shipping. I think that these units are more likely to have a problem with the electronics than they are with the hardware, just my opinion. Again though, even though I had the refrigerator for at least a year, I had no problem with warranty because the service was immediate and friendly. They're not aware of my channel and others have reported the same service also. It seems it's easier for them to just give a refund than it is for them to do an exchange though and that's the only reason I don't own one at this time. Of course I have other refrigerators because of my channel or I would buy another Alpicool again without hesitation.

    Sounds like the Jackery is working fine! This is like an RV A/C start/run capacitor issue with a small generator. The addition of a "Hard Start" capacitor to the RV A/C quickly solved that issue on my rig... maybe a similar approach with this fridge, maybe? A slightly higher capacity start/run capacitor for the compressor might be in order. Good Luck & Happy Trails!

    • @gonagain
      @gonagain  3 роки тому +1

      That was the problem with the first unit I had, but I don't think it's actually a capacitor on these. I read it's more of a "slow start" feature that is programmed in to work like a capacitor. I could be wrong, but I don't see a capacitor "can" on the refrigeration.

I just ordered the Apicool 20 quart, to have as a freezer, I appreciate iced drinks, and frozen meals. I hope it's as quiet and dependable as my Dometic, I just wish they had White cases instead of gray!

    I've had my Alpicool C15 for 3 years and still working great. i got it from Amazon on a flash sale for $110. Used mostly on 2 or 3 day off road desert trips 5 or 6 times a year I have not bought a single bag of ice since having it (ice is not cheap in Death Valley). Because it's not the most durable brand I always strap it down on my sleeping bag to absorb shock and so far so good. My oversized Jeep battery powers it overnight no problem and I have an Awanfi 300w battery pack that runs it for exactly 24 hours if needed. At 3x, even 4x the price, the "better' brands just cost too much.
