I don’t get it. So what did the manager want? All of Duncan ferguson, dave Watson and unsworth to step in and grab the manager against the wall? Or to stop him laying hands on Don? Because as harsh as he was with Don, it was an argument over his performance. And sometimes things do escalate in the dressing room. So if those players don’t jump in then they ain’t together and if they do latch onto the manager then it’s utter disregard of his authority because they didn’t know it was a set up. They thought it was real and maybe just maybe they wanted to stop the situation being escalated but couldn’t as they thought it would tear turn the authority of the manager.

It wasn't a test. Smith just realised he'd gone too far after the fact. So he back engineered the whole "test" narrative.

I don't understand Walter Smith's line of reasoning here.

Divided squad not fighting for each other ..poor performances needed a change..felt that Hutch standing up was the act of a leader

I remember him being booed at Everton after he slapped Richard Gough who had chastised him for not picking his man up on two successive corners - came to half time and Gough patted him on the shoulder and pointed to the dressing room - don’t remember him being in too much of a hurry to join him but in all fairness he was a good player for Everton and many were sorry to see him leave in the end.

Did they have a scrap in the dressing room then?

He slapped Goughie around the face on the pitch in front of everyone? Little slap or big slap?

Interesting that no one intervened. Smith obviously saw something in Don that the others didn't possess (In WS opinion.) After going after Don in front of everyone and no one saying anything. How could anyone then say anything? The time to do so had passed. Also (Just a theory of mine.) WS testing Don to see if he would step up as Captain and tell Duncan and the rest of the players that he was now Captain. Mibees Aye, but Mibees naw as someone once said.
