I do love the SoC reveals and all the build up to them, even if they end up being ones we've already seen. But nothing beats that one time when you discovered the Monkey King CPU. They nailed a lot of details on this system. As you showed, the HuCard animation going into the system is nice(and way nicer in my opinion than the zoom effect I've seen in some implementations of EmulationStation...not a fan of that). There's also a nice touch on the save screen, as that gray thing shown for each slot is an accessory known as the Tennokoe Bank. It allowed for proper game saves in games that supported it and it attached to the back of the system the same way the CD attachment would. Funny how the smallest console has become one of the larger mini consoles since it's not too miniaturized. I immediately became a fan of the PC Engine and Core Grafx designs as soon as I saw them. If I didn't have any of the actual consoles, I'd jump on this mini one for sure. I ended up with a real PCE controller that lacks the turbo switches -- it's the first model of controller they had. I would like to know if the USB pads for this work on PC. Also, if possible, can you tell me if the Playstation mini controllers work on PC and Raspberry Pi without issue as well. Those controllers could be handy to have.
Thanks for the video. I owned a TG16 back when they were revelant and preordered one a few months back. The wait will be painful but completly understandable. I remember reading magazines before the release and seeing pictures of the PC Engine. I always felt the US got a raw deal in the fact that the PC Engine and Core Grafix were these cute, little systems while the TG16 was big and bulky.
Definitely want to see an all-games video. Had the TurboGrafx 16 back in the day (still actually have it) and I LOVE it. Especially loved that the same HUE cards worked in the handheld version, which I also have. System should have dominated the market.
You need to mention that horizontal games like Lords of Thunder,R Type, and etc on this mini have scrolling shimmer. It is very noticeable by gamers that use original hardware. This may be a deal breaker for those that want almost as close to the real thing as possible?
Nice man! Mine should arrive Thursday. I was a little bummed about the TG16 delay, but this will definitely hold me over until then. Like you, I was probably most excited for this version anyways.
I didn't have anything to do with these consoles growing up (had Nes/SNES/Megadrive/Mastersystem/Amiga/PS1 etc) in fact I don't remember seeing them. However I can see the little touches to this mini console that shows the passion the creators have had. Here's hoping Nintendo can do an N64 mini with the same love.
You can still get the PCE Mini and Core Grafx Mini if you order from Amazon Japan. I got my Core Grafx yesterday and it only took 4 days to get here. I paid $110.00 USD total for the whole package including delivery. As of today there are 66 known games on the TG-16 and Core Grafx. Technically if you consider the secret American version of Ninja Gaiden there are 67 titles included...so far. This thing in any of its 3 forms is well worth the price of admission. The PCE, Core Grafx, and TG-16 Mini are so well made that it's hard to believe how cheap it is. I have tested every single game on the machine and have only had issues with Ninja Gaiden (ENG). For once it the hype matches the product. When the TG-16 Mini is officially released here in the States I will be picking two of them up day and date of its launch (one for me and one for my fiancee how is also a diehard gamer).
Fantastic stuff as always. This has been the one mini console I have been most excited of seeing a review on, and it has definitely proven that it is amazing quality, with proper love put in to getting it right. Sadly the cost for me in Australia is a tad prohibitive, but I am definitely thinking once some funds free up I will definitely grabbing one. Thank you as always for the great content.
I just got mine yesterday, playing Rondo of Blood right now. Console is great. I also pre-ordered both PC Engine and Turbografx-16 from Amazon Japan, but I ended up canceling my TG-16 mini because it is too big in size and it would have looked out of place and weird next to all my other mini consoles. I know that they were going for a correct scale between both, but I think it was a bad decision, and I have seen online that I'm not the only one who thought so. Too bad, because I wanted that one too, had it been a bit smaller. Nintendo did so with their NES and Famicom, the minis are much more approximate in size than the real respective consoles, for the sake of harmony. PC Engine fits right in though, as you have shown, so I'm glad I got that one.
Please tell me how you are able to put out so many videos so quickly! Do you have a warehouse full of electronics, and a team to help you produce? Truly amazing
So when you changed it from pc engine to turbografx did it change the games list? So it doesn’t matter which one you buy all games are on all the consoles you just have switch which interface you want?
M2 was responsible for the emulation side of things. They also did the emulation for the Genesis mini as well. I'm still waiting for my TG16 mini that I've preordered.
I noticed your comment from a year ago... how did you find the Mini compares to your actual PC Engine? I'd definitely prefer the original console, but I have neither myself. I'd love to own R-Type Hucards! Do you still play the systems?
This is a special kind of mini. More 3rd party titles than you can ever hope for. Of course you get plenty of Hudson titles as expected. Whats probably the biggest advantage here is Konami is behind it and has plenty of great titles to add. Plus Tecmo, Taito, Namco, Falcon, etc. About a dozen PC-CD games and a couple of Super Grafx titles. As always I went for the Japanese version. I like the design and the controller is really great despite only coming with a single controller. The plus side is they are USB ports so you have other options. I absolutely love this mini. The only real complaint I have is a handful of games in Japanese only. I was able to put translation patches on a small number of games. Hopefully a few more fan translation hacks come along in the near future.
The system has been dumped and the usual people are working on it, NV, Honeylab etc. Not all of us have been able to secure a unit just yet. My pre-order was canceled :( What's interesting is that the hardware actually varies between some of the systems. Not sure how that will affect things just yet, (if at all).
I love this console! although I noticed the scrolling is slightly jerky in some games like Dragon Spirit... it's almost like it can't keep up at times but I don't know if that was the case in the original console or is it an emulation issue. Also some games are in Japanese, so good luck figuring out how to play those :)
I love that the Mini is only about an inch smaller than the original tiny console xD I sure hope they make a mini CD-ROM and interface unit add-on like the Genesis got.
I think it's in Japanese? As far as I know only the Sega CD version is in English or if you can find the translation floating around. (Not sure what they did or how good it is I haven't tried it yet.)
Not fair! I was meant to be getting a Core Grafx for my birthday in early April. Not now. Enjoyed the vid. Nice front-end and everything looks top notch.
Was looking forward to getting mines until it got delay till the end of this year. So glad you got your hands on a unit. At least we could see what you are going to do it. Thank you.
What sucks about the TG-16 mini (and the pc engine core grafx) is that it only comes with one controller and a second one is from the pc engine is all you can get unless you get two systems.
My god They REALLY made this thing the best it could be! It seriously destroys all the other mini consoles in terms of attention to details, and the library! Wish the SNES mini was as detailed as this. Like if they also had a satellaview section where it had animations of a satellite beaming down to a SFC or something. So much potential.
Awesome review, thank you. Believe it or not, my brother still owns the original Turbo Graxx 16. We have about 20 games for it. Including China warrior, bonks av, and others. The one game I always wanted, but we were too broke to ever buy, was splatter house. I might end up buying the Turo grxx mini, just for that game.
Would love to see a test of lag from the emulator, compared to a real PC engine, or PC or Pi. PCE has lots of great SMUPS you need minimum lag time. Film it with a high-speed camera showing your finger press the button and then slow it down to see how long before character/ship moves.
Looks like there are a lot of sci-fi / shmup and fantasy games. I never have played the PC engine or TurboGrafx-16, but this makes me pretty tempted to go buy one of these.
Hallo ETA. I got all the other mini systems except TurboGrafx-16 /PC Engin/CoreGrafx. I live in South Africa and Amazon says the don't ship to here. How can I get one of these systems, PLEASE HELP
So between the 3 consoles, there is a real difference of one less game on anything that it isn't the PC Engine version? I would love to see a video with all the games, a quick look if you wish, as I was never a PC Engine player back in the day.
It would be interesting to see a tear down of the controller and comparison to an original PCE controller, I wonder if the rubber pads would fit if you wanted to refurbish an original unit?
Go for you on getting it, however this is among the minis i had no desire to acquire the PCEngine mini or TGFX16 mini. I will get the evercade when I can, just no desires for a mini console other than the four I am content to own and that includes the Neo-Geo mini, Genesis mini, NES mini, and SNES mini.
Looks amazing!! Thanks for the video and rubbing it in my face that I have to wait until the end of the year to get my turbo 16 mini in Canada . NOOOOOO!! 😫😫😫
also preordered mine through amazon japan but mine just now arrived at the shipper and is just now be shipped to me. so no idea when it will actually get to my door.
Because it has a horrendous looking case! Back in the eighties we were lucky to be next to Belgium: France always got original Japanese stuff, so they had the PC Engine, and later, because France were SCART junkies, the CoreGrafx with RGB output. The Brittons got the fugly US version. Here in the Netherlands, you could choose, as both channels, UK/BE-FR were around the corner. Everybody with taste bought the original ones.
With this mini-console, you can tell they ACTUALLY gave a s***. Well done.

My pre-order was canceled :(
What's interesting is that the hardware actually varies between some of the systems.
Can’t wait till it eventually comes out in UK
If you buy the CORE (Grey machine), it comes with the turbo joypad.
I love that the Mini is only about an inch smaller than the original tiny console xD I sure hope they make a mini CD-ROM and interface unit add-on like the Genesis got.
Getting this for Snatcher makes the whole console worth it among all the other games
Sadly its only in Japanese I believe, until someone patches it or you can run the Sega CD version
I'm glad they gave the option for plain black background, got a bit worried there!
Very cool. I will get this when things get better
I love that they are preserving the early generation of gaming. *This might have been the best device to replicate it.*
Thank you for doing this video. This will have to sooth my fix until ours ship.
My god
They REALLY made this thing the best it could be! It seriously destroys all the other mini consoles in terms of attention to details, and the library!
Wish the SNES mini was as detailed as this. Like if they also had a satellaview section where it had animations of a satellite beaming down to a SFC or something. So much potential.
What about game pad compatibility with PC or Raspberry? I am willing to see that happening! So I can order a few more controllers.
People that have 600 retro pi consoles at home but still excited for the 601st.
Amazon Japan is accepting orders on the PC Engine mini. I ordered min on March 20th, it arrives on the 27th. But pre-orders come with a bonus disc?
Amazing really well done. As always well done review.
@ ETA PRIME
I can't wait for the TG16 mini stateside! When you select the TG16 menu do the game play in english?
Thanks for the review. Any update on hacks? Turbo-tap clones, auto-fire workarounds, sideloading?
never had this system growing up but got roms for my raspberry pi thanks to eta, ninja spirit is the shit
Would love to see a test of lag from the emulator, compared to a real PC engine, or PC or Pi. PCE has lots of great SMUPS you need minimum lag time. Film it with a high-speed camera showing your finger press the button and then slow it down to see how long before character/ship moves.
You're super lucky! I was looking forward to adding this to my mini collection 😠
Looks like there are a lot of sci-fi / shmup and fantasy games. I never have played the PC engine or TurboGrafx-16, but this makes me pretty tempted to go buy one of these.
Where did you order the Coregrafx from? Amazon UK won't ship to the US when I tried to get it.
Can you try if the controller works well with the EmuElec Android Box?
Whoa, I don't know why I didn't think that this wouldn't have Rondo of Blood. Kinda wish I order one of these now.
NOOOOOO!! 😫😫😫
Big fan of gradius here. Is it really good on this console?
Dude the hdmi cover is cool 😂 u have to know it's cool.
Can't wait to get this in my home. Are the cords on the controllers 3ft or 6ft?
Nice and Congrats!
This is hands down the best mini system out at the moment i can't wait to see it hacked to add more it's an awesome looking mini
It will be hacked yesterday, it's mostly the same as the Genesis mini. I wouldn't be surprised if lunar project worked on it already.
I want this so badly.
also preordered mine through amazon japan but mine just now arrived at the shipper and is just now be shipped to me. so no idea when it will actually get to my door.
Looks like a quality product!
why did you get the PC Engine and not the TG-16 which I assume would be cheaper and have the controller with the auto fire feature?
Because it has a horrendous looking case! Back in the eighties we were lucky to be next to Belgium: France always got original Japanese stuff, so they had the PC Engine, and later, because France were SCART junkies, the CoreGrafx with RGB output. The Brittons got the fugly US version. Here in the Netherlands, you could choose, as both channels, UK/BE-FR were around the corner. Everybody with taste bought the original ones.
