Questioning the 8bitdo TG-16 Mini controllers, looks like they replaced the turbo selection switch with a button. Unless its a button that adjusts the turbo speed, its a no for me.
This video just made me feel proud of myself because literally just 2 days ago I ordered the Core Grafx for damn near all the same reasons. Thanks Ron!
I've got the PAL version of the PC Engine. It's basically the Turbografx 16 model but in dark grey instead of black and they dropped the "16" from the title. Although it's strange they went for the Core Grafx to represent Europe I'm glad they did as it's a much nicer looking machine (though the Core Grafx2 with the orange lettering may be nicer still).
Core is the best model...and WHY are people removing that TG-16 flap more than once? plug your cables in and done. Get an external switch or whatever if you need to move HDMI devices around. Boggles my Noggin!
Can totally see why you would go with the choice you did. I think I’m going to stud with the TG16 for nostalgic reasons alone. Dig seeing the comparisons.
Turbo grafx is bigger because it's all relative to the other pc engine mini's. The other 2 are as small as the motherboard would allow (which is not much smaller than the originals), and the TG16 is just relative to that. If the other 2 are 75% of their original size, so is the TG16. That's just a random number though, I'm not sure if the exact percentage.
Thanks for the honest review. I was gonna get the turbo grafx 16 but now im getting the core grafx. Big fan of your channel and content. Keep up the great work!
I'm so freaking stoked! I purchased my Core Grafx Mini two days ago on Amazon Japan. I tried to get the Turbo Grafx 16 but they were all sold out. I really didn't want the PC Engine Mini as the controllers are non-turbo. However, if the PCE Mini was the only one available, I would have purchased it in a second. I seriously am so stupidly excited for this thing to arrive. In 1989, I chose the Sega Genesis over the TG-16. My birthday after Christmas of '89 we tried to get a TG-16 but couldn't find one. The games were available but the systems were nowhere to be found. I wound up getting an Snes in 1991 with the hopes of getting a TG-16 eventually. I did get a Turbo Grafx 16 later in life but I don't have many games. I'm what you would call a Neo Geo AES/MVS/CDZ, Sega Saturn, and Sony PlayStation collector. As soon as I get my hands on this machine I'm going to play until my thumbs bleed. I remember having (still do) a Sega CD with games like Lunar Eternal Blue and Silver Star Story that I would play constantly. I always wanted to play Y's and it felt almost like the TG-16 Super CD ROM's version of that. I know they're vastly different but both were quirky JRPG's on brand new media not found anywhere else. I would see reviews of Y's in gaming mags and I wanted it so badly...now, I am going to finally knock that off of my bucket list. Core Grafx Mini wins!!!
Hey man after tracking this thing for about a year, it was your videos that helped me decide. Just today my Core grafx mini came in and i love it, for all the same reasons you mentioned. Thanks for the help and keep up the great content brother!
Tim Davis Honestly both the US and Japanese version of Splatterhouse are so incredibly censored compared to the arcade, I almost always play the arcade version. It is SO much better in every way possible.
I got mine from a fellow in the UK. I love the size and the form factor of the Core Grafx. I also love the gray and blue color scheme! The TG-16 is too big and unwieldy for my taste, also goes upward of $200 now. I got the Core Grafx for like $120. Excellent vid!!!!
I ordered it just now from Japan. I took your recommendation Madlittlepixel. I went for the Core Grafx version. I cannot wait to get it! Thanks for the cool video!
I agree with everything you said having owned all 3 myself. I got the PCE first when they were available, then the TG16, then the Core last when I realized it was probably the best one because of the form factor and color scheme. Conclusion: the CoreGrafx is, indeed, the best of the three
I have the Coregrafx mini, very sleek model. Getting the white PCE controller from Konami any day now and the Core wireless controller from 8bitdo in May. I love this thing and cant wait to hack it
I also don't have that nostalgia for the TurboGrafx-16 as I never had or played it back in the days. But that was the main reason I was excited for this news minis. I couldn't get all 3 of them so I went with the one I thought it looked better and had more features. I got the Core Grafx Mini and I don't regret it. I'm loving it 💜. I have a modded PlayStation Classic and it's awesome but out of the box the Core Grafx Mini is awesome. The controllers with turbo sliders and the animated interface are so cool!
SUPER psyched for Phobos and/or any other hacks for the AWESOME machines! That said, the TG-16 mini (which is the one I have) is, and always will be, my favorite. It's what I grew up with but...I will be grabbing both the Core AND PC Engine (had those back in the day too) as well. Can't wait to load games like Legendary Axe I and II, Dragon's Curse, Devil's Crush, Jackie Chan and Bloody Wolf (to name a few) on the TG mini!
Awesome dude! I'm waiting for my preorder through Amazon for the TurboGrafx 16 Mini. I had one back in the day & I'm glad to hear I can add Legendary Axe 1 & 2 & Devils Crush down the road! 🤘
Thanks for clearing things up on the differences. I was originally resistant to getting these but they look like one of the best out of the box sans hacking.
I'm going to get the TurboGrafx-16 because that's the region version I grew up with and matches all the other minis I have. Maybe I'll get one of the other variants if I decide to go with a mod but for a stock model I gotta go with nostalgia. At last we can re-live the 16-bit era. =)
Konami knocked it out of the park on these. Yes they could have given us a few more Turbografx games on SCD, but they still did an amazing job with M2. Even keeping with the America always needs it bigger was a nice touch. I did fall in love with the scan line option and hate now having it turned off. I really do miss my Turboduo, but this will have to do.
I picked up the PC Engine Mini simply because I was getting an 8bitDo wireless controller anyways, and they were going for like half the price of the other two. Sucks that it doesn’t have salamander, but I’m not spending an extra $100 for just one game
I really dig the core graphx myself, I like the appearance, especially the blue and shiny plate guard on controller as you mentioned. I think its funny that salamander (which doesn't even need a language patch) isn't on the pc engine... and basically all the games are identical (minus Rick's white mask 😷 )... and finally, form factor, why didn't they just shrink down the TG16 as much as possible so its actually "a mini" !!! Would have been unique. PS, LOVED YOUR dream cast hardware videos. Rock on.
Love these mini consoles... I chose the PC Engine mini but in hindsight should've gone with the Core Grafx. Do you guys know if they create their own emulators? Seems impressive to create something in such a short time.
I wish they would release the identical controller that comes with the TurboGrafx. As soon as it was announced I per ordered it but eventually ordered it from Amazon JP. It's the mini system that I wanted the most because of the nostalgia. TurboGrafx 16 was the first system I saw Street Fighter on home console and I was blown away! I never owned the TG16 as I had the Genesis and I only knew one person that owned one. Not many people did. But I would ditch middle school and go over to a friends house to play it. Good times.😄
The Japanese link in your description for the TG-16 for Amazon goes to a page that says new from 44,800 ¥ or about $420. As many memories I have with TG-16, I think I'll wait until it comes out here.
I imported the PC Engine from Japan as was the same price as what the Core Grafx would cost in the UK and got already instead of waiting. I've got a controller on pre-order in the UK with the turbo functions, which will sort the issue you bring up but might change to the 8Bitdo wireless controller. Wasn't bothered about Salamander as lot's of other shooters on it but then again I can't really play the two games I've got instead but can't play Snatcher either lol
You can litterly find anything on UA-cam ☝️👍 I was Just looking around and wondering about the differences between the consoles. So, big thanks for the upload! 👍👍👍👍👍 Unfortunately though, the CoreGrafx mini or the other versions non the less are totally abscent here in Sweden
I'd love to go for the Core Model, but considering on how these things are a pain to find atm, I just went with the TG-16 Mini Model instead, and I was LUCKY to even grab one at a good price with how people have been reselling the consoles at insane prices. :/ Bought one from Amazon Warehouse, it's used but it's stated to be in good condition and I got it at around the retail price. Now I'm just waiting for it to ship to my house, hope it works out. at least I can hopefully get the 8bitdo core wireless controller, as I really like the core grafx design of both the system and the controller. :)
Im curious does the core grafx lock framerate in at 50hz like other European consoles of the day, or does it go to 60? I like the core grafx the best, but if it plays at 50, I would have to go for the turbo grafx.
I would be tempted by the Core Grafx if I knew that I could use a USB arcade stick with it. Does it support non-proprietary arcade sticks? I have Xbox 360 and PS3/PS4 arcade sticks and would love to be able to use them for the shmups on that system, but... without knowing...?
I think the PC Engine version of Salamander is the best home version of the game. It removes the voice, but I think the music sounds better! What a great game!
Just a heads up. I preordered the TG16 last July the day it went up. There was speculation that the Dec 31st 2020 date was just a placeholder. Well I jist got an email from Amazon with a shipping update, saying it will ship Jan 8th - 13th 2021. Wow, just wow.
The Core Grafx is the best version but I have nostalgia for the original white PC Engine so that is the one I got. Hopefully the Hori Turbo pad should be here next week and I just love the original styling on the box. Those 8bitdo pads look great but Amazon US aren’t shipping to the UK on these which is bizarre seeing as I preordered the new SNES 2.4g pad from there too.
I got the ox engine mini and it’s pretty good I’m not suffering too much for not having turbo switches on the controller, the only game it really effects is Bonk
I'm probably going to get the Core Grafx Mini for space-saving purposes. I have the TG mini and it just takes up too much real estate on the shelf compared to my other mini consoles.
Hi! My pc engine mini don't work anymore. The pad don't work but he's work perfectly on a rasberry. There is no information on that problem on internet. Do you know if it's repairable?
Well the thing is that when the TG-16 came out it was huge. This was due to the head guys at nec/hudson, they thought that the american market would not embrace the pc engine look. They thought the resizing would have to happen they thought bigger is better!
Yeah thats all Id have hoped for. Its only because they used the same board for all 3 minis. They fit perfectly in the square of the Pc Engine and Core Grafx but theyd have had to make it a rectangle to make the TG 16 smaller.... And I guess they didnt want to bother lol.
Th Core Gfx Mini is for the European market but not for Germany. Only for Great Britain, France and Italy. It's not available on Amazon Germany. No problem, you can get it via Ebay on Germany. I've just ordered the Core Gfx Mini. Good to know that many people prefer the European version.
Which of all the minis out there is your favorite ? With the crazy awesome modding community around it, I LOVE the PlayStation Classic. Especially with the new project Eris.
I always liked the look too! Except when the originals would turn yellow lol. I had a really nice clean PC Engine a few years ago, but it had a lot of issues... so wound up getting the Core Grafx hardware and was happy.
Out of these 3 I would pick the Turbogarfx 16 and 2nd the Core and then the Pc Engine 3rd.,reason I would not get the Pc Engine because of the white color it tends to turn yellowed with time.
Definitely holding out for Hakchi. I don't want to be forced to put RetroArch and EmulationStation on this. I don't care if RetroArch is "Better", I want to keep this true to the original UI and system concept, without having to bypass RetroArch.
I actually have all of these on a modded system. All good but I tend to find myself playing Turbo graphix the most. Pretty cool mod, has all the old school handheld, systems, and even watch games on it.
So many games missing that I feel should have been included, like Side Arms, Tiger Heli, Don Doka Don, 1943, bloody wolf, Devils crush, just to name a few. Instead they’ve added some very poor games in there instead. But there are a few good ones included in there too, R’type & Gunhead being two that I used to enjoy👍🏼
Thanks for the info! I'm not so lucky, can't find the Core Grafx. I still have my regular TG16 and remember there was a game that didn't run well with the turbos on high and played better on mid. Can't remember which game it was though.

How do you order from Japan amazon? It wont take my us address it keeps asking what part of Japan I live in and there isn't any us states to choose.

The fact that this never came to Canada, and they never warned us annoys me so much. I kind of lost my chance to get it at a reasonable price.
Any update on the hack?,

@madlittlepixel what’s the latest on the pc engine hack?
Wish they made a Turbo Duo mini. Always loved the design of that one.
Maybe they will with different games! That would be awesome! I always wanted a duo!!!

Where is the hack 🤔 more than 2 years and still not out?
I went for the TG-16 Mini for aesthetics and for Salamander. Just wish it had the uncensored Splatterhouse.
Tim Davis Honestly both the US and Japanese version of Splatterhouse are so incredibly censored compared to the arcade, I almost always play the arcade version. It is SO much better in every way possible.
I ended up going with the absolute unit Turbografx Mini. I love it. I’m over the moon with it actually
TG-16 is bigger, but I think the design is better than the others. Good article!
Do the TG Grfx and The Core Grafx also have the shimmer and lag issues?
I can’t wait to put on legendary axe. This is the only mini system I have, and I absolutely love it
I love legendary axe. It's the only game on the TG-16 that I can 1cc in one sitting, even to this day.
I agree with everything you said having owned all 3 myself. I got the PCE first when they were available, then the TG16, then the Core last when I realized it was probably the best one because of the form factor and color scheme. Conclusion: the CoreGrafx is, indeed, the best of the three
Jonathan Lisowski yes they do. All three use HDMI which is standard across regions
I have the Coregrafx mini, very sleek model. Getting the white PCE controller from Konami any day now and the Core wireless controller from 8bitdo in May. I love this thing and cant wait to hack it
Hi Madlittlepixel, any updates on the hack? When will it be released to the public?
Any idea what size that extension cable is? Looks like the perfect fit.
There is nothing mini about the TurboGrafx mini :(
Do you think true blue will release something for this like with the ps classic and genesis mini???
I also don't have that nostalgia for the TurboGrafx-16 as I never had or played it back in the days. But that was the main reason I was excited for this news minis.
I couldn't get all 3 of them so I went with the one I thought it looked better and had more features. I got the Core Grafx Mini and I don't regret it. I'm loving it 💜. Awesome! Knew it wouldn't be long before they cracked this baby. Time to get mine! Domo arigato!
Thanks for clearing things up on the differences. I was originally resistant to getting these but they look like one of the best out of the box sans hacking.
Tutorial to hacks and add more games ?
I like the TG-16 more. I grew up with it. I don't mind it's size. The color, aesthetic, and games draws me to it more than the PCE and CG.
Any news on this hack?
I'm going to get the TurboGrafx-16 because that's the region version I grew up with and matches all the other minis I have. Maybe I'll get one of the other variants if I decide to go with a mod but for a stock model I gotta go with nostalgia. At last we can re-live the 16-bit era. =)
Amazon US says the new delivery date for Tg16 mini is Jan 5 2021!
I got all three, and getting all 3 controllers and bought through your affiliate link. For me, it’s the TG16 mini I like em all though!
I like em all... but really probably wouldnt use the PC Engine Mini much.
100% agree Core is my fav mini out of the 3
My only issue with the 8bitdo controllers is that I don't know if two receivers can fit next to each other with how the USB ports are laid out.
Thanks to you i finally realize i want the Turbo Grafx-16 and the size of the system doesn't matter to me personally 👍.
I was hoping someone would do a comparison. Keep up the good work!
I picked up the PC Engine Mini simply because I was getting an 8bitDo wireless controller anyways, and they were going for like half the price of the other two. Sucks that it doesn’t have salamander, but I’m not spending an extra $100 for just one game
TG-16, Core Grafx and PC Engine ,are these the same consoles, only reissues? Graphics and music are the same as well as compatibility?
I wish they all got together and agreed on a scale for the mini systems so they all look legit on the shelf together side by side.
they all used the same exact board...so, there was no way to make the TG-16 any smaller (length wise) because of the depth of the board
What’s the difference? Like the PC Core is a blend of PC Engine + Turbo Graph?
I have the p.c. Engine mini and the Turbografx 16 mini, can't find the Coregrafx mini at a reasonable price, can't find it for less than $200
I imported the PC Engine from Japan as was the same price as what the Core Grafx would cost in the UK and got already instead of waiting.

Love the tg-16. Agree with the form factor, but nostalgia wins it for me. Never heard of the other 2 systems before.
that's because the PC engine consoles were only released in Japan. TG-16 was released in USA to compete with Nintendo and Sega.
I think the PC Engine version of Salamander is the best home version of the game. It removes the voice, but I think the music sounds better! What a great game!
thanks bro always so informative.. cheers
Appreciate you MLP!
Can you just plug these into your smart tv?
I got the ox engine mini and it’s pretty good I’m not suffering too much for not having turbo switches on the controller, the only game it really effects is Bonk
Can I add .PCE ROMs on this , with a hack ,like they did on the snes mini
Love your vids
How do you order PC Engine CoreGrafx from amazon when they say they dont ship to usa?
I grew up on TG16. If I bought one one of the 3, I would choose TG16. I just wished that it was made smaller like SNES/NES classics
Yeah thats all Id have hoped for. Its only because they used the same board for all 3 minis. They fit perfectly in the square of the Pc Engine and Core Grafx but theyd have had to make it a rectangle to make the TG 16 smaller.... And I guess they didnt want to bother lol.
Quick question, can the USB controllers be used on PCs/Raspberry Pi for emulation?
Th Core Gfx Mini is for the European market but not for Germany. Only for Great Britain, France and Italy. It's not available on Amazon Germany. No problem, you can get it via Ebay on Germany. I've just ordered the Core Gfx Mini. Good to know that many people prefer the European version.
I have all mini and hacked except this one and unsure what to get, no history or knowledge of these as consoles...
Nice video bro
I always thought the other minis were to minis. This doesnt bother me at all. Looking forward to some day getting the TG-16
Which of all the minis out there is your favorite ? With the crazy awesome modding community around it, I LOVE the PlayStation Classic. Especially with the new project Eris.
Will a US usb plug adapter work with the Coregrafx Mini?
Update: Received mine recently. It works with a US usb charger (Specifically a 5V2A usb plug just to be safe)
do you think 8bitdo will do an og pc engin controller?
I always liked that white original. Sleak and sweet!!
I just got the coregrafx mini cause they are sold out of the turbografx mini on amazon japan
How is it with the it's a long time ago??
Phobos, like the planet in DOOM, my friend.
Or Phobos one of the actual moons on Mars ;-)
I actually have all of these on a modded system. All good but I tend to find myself playing Turbo graphix the most. Pretty cool mod, has all the old school handheld, systems, and even watch games on it.
Any recommendations on a micro USB dongle for this?
You can buy PCE turbo controllers separately. In fact, I think those are the only kind you can buy separately from the console. I bought one.
Love the videos brother
Here's hoping the modmyclassic hack doesn't include extra non-game thumbnails in the game list like we got with project lunar
